Overrated:

Fahrenheit
MKK(horrible, upscale Jovan)
Grey Flannel
Creed Himalaya
Patou ph(its a lovely scent, but the adoration for it is too much)

Abused

AdG
One Million
D&G The One(at least around here)

Just bad:

Le Male
Black Orchid(Yup, I said it)
Poison (and all its flankers)

If I have offended anyone sorry about that..Its all subjective

I don't like Black Orchid much either. Who would want to wear that? I like Fleur du Male much more than Le Male which is horrible.

Elie Saab.

I'm looking at your favorites list, and I just don't understand. I would have thought VC&A Pour Homme would be an underrated fragrance. Maybe you got an inferior formulation? The stuff is a great leather fragrance.

Individual Scents:

Kouros
Vintage Chanel feminines
Jules, Derby, and other rich, mossy/leathery powerhouses
Black Aoud
Caraceni 1913
and as much as I like the recent flankers, the original A*Men is drastically over-rated (and horrible)
DHI is easily overrated.
Aramis Havana.

It's a good scent, and one I'm pretty fond of, but while it was discontinued in the US it generated enormous hype and sent people into bidding frenzies on ebay. Now it is readily available for under $30 in discounters, and I rarely see it discussed here anymore.

I have a feeling this might be bit overrated:

http://www.amazon.com/Clive-Christia...d_sim_sbs_bt_6

Besides, I saw it at Marshall's for half price.

I must admit I love the reviews, though

Cheers,

Mario

Those reviews don't appear very genuine to me - no one actually describes the scent.

I wonder if one can get tester bottles of it on the grey market?
Cheers,
Renato

I'm ready for the heat but Chanel PLATINUM Egoiste. To me seems to linear and nothing really dense or special like other Chanels with unique characteristics and levels of notes, and that metallic note is like a knife to the head. Through the years though I have learned not to judge a book by its cover.

the idea of something being overrated is kinda weird to me...If it got the fame through many people liking it and posting about it then it seems to likely deserve the praise. I guess I think this should more be called which highly rated scent do you dislike. to which I would say Guerlain L'instant.

Most over-rated: Nautica Voyage
Most under-rated: Nautica Voyage
Most used & abused: Acqua Di Gio
For me--Le Male=WAY OVERRATED!!! Along with 1 Million, Live Jazz, Amen, Platinum Egoiste, and, sorry to say it all of the house of Creed that I have had the displeasure of testing EXCEPT Green Irish Tweed...although I think it is way overrated, it is the ONLY Creed I can stomach.

I thought anything wearable should be generic and lack uniqueness

Well said! And I think heperd also said much the same in about 6 more direct but less diplomatic words somewhere up there ^.

For me, there are a few whose hype don't compute for me at all. These include:

TdH - simple, linear, synthetic. Maybe knowing it has all that Iso E Super predisposed me to find it so.

GIT - I'm in the "it's basically Cool Water" camp on this one. It's nice as far as that goes, but the people that say it's way better than CW are getting something I'm definitely not.

Pure Malt - I like the original, but this is a weaker A*Men with a hint of booze in the opening.

Aoud Cuir d'Arabie - I find this one repellent and plasticky

Bulgari Black - the tire note is kinda cool, but once the novelty of that wears off I find the core accord to be unique, but loses its appeal before long
post #100 of 113
it's been said before that Aventus smells like a department store frag. I could not agree more. Other than that, Musc Ravegar and the entire Serge Lutens line.
depends on your own nose. aventus is not overrated imo, just heavily overpriced.
I had a boyfriend who wore Cool Water and Aqua di Gio. Both were terrible. I dont understand why these are so popular.
Missoni. God knows what Luca Turin was going on about, its such an uninspiring nothing-ness scent.
Dior homme. Smells like lipstick and redvines to me.

There are many scents that get a lot of hype among aficionados on Basenotes and another set that are top sellers in the larger market. I've been finding that a lot of the scents that enthusiasts like for their creativity, uniqueness, or artistry are lost on people who aren't as into fragrances. Even popular, mass marketed scents don't guarantee a magic reaction, but they are probably less likely to get a negative reaction than something really daring and out there. It's quite rare that I run into a fragrance that gets unsolicited, positive reactions from people

For me, being overrated is when people rave about a scent that deserves praise, but has an exaggerated reputation. It's true that lots of "overrated" scents are good, but just not as good as some people make them out to be.

Disliking a famous scent is the extreme case. I rarely dislike a scent, but lots of fragrances popular among either enthusiasts or the masses don't do much for me either. Thankfully, this helps me to keep me wardrobe expansion at an affordable rate
post #106 of 113
Mostly CREED - some are worth the price, like Aventus. But Vanisia is not.

Mostly BOND NO. 9 - most are energetic but not really worth the high price tag.

**************
On the other hand, if the scent is very special and delicious to a particular member, why not. People pay any price for what matches their fancy.

I find the most overrated thing in perfumery is actually a material: OUD. There's going to be a lot of OUD themed fragrances gathering dust and eventually being shipped off into the grey market.
This stuff is so specific and limited in its appeal. It is never going to replace Mysore Sandalwood, ambergris, or musk as a base.
Chanel Egoiste, YSL Kouros and La nuit de l'homme.

That happened to me. Some of the 1st niche fragrances I ever sampled were LDDM, Ambre Precieux, MDO Vetyver, Jub XXV. Thought Jub was nice but didn't really care for any of them.

I've still yet to find a fragrance that blows my mind. At best I've thought a fragrance smelled nice on 1st impression, then I grew to really like it. But there's nothing that I'm nuts about.

There are plenty of both bad and mediocre oud fragrances to go around. But oud is a wonderful note.
