Awaiting Mouchoir de Monsieur

Thread Starter
I've just ordered a bottle of Mouchoir de Monsieur, and am very curious as to how it will wear on me. After having read a fair amount of reviews of it, I decided to give it a go. I really enjoy wearing unique fragrances; my favourite to date has been Façonnable, but it's hard to come by near me.

I've read the elegant and very avant garde review of Mouchoir de Monsieur by the BN member of the same name, and I must say, I was floored by his manor of writing; quite impressive! What analytical skills, and his love of words is as apparent as his knowledge of how to appropriately use them! Bien fait!

Well, the day that I receive the "parfum" and wear it, I will attempt to write my own review.

*Fingers crossed and nose poised*

Welcome, Harry.

This is a wonderful spin on the venerable Jicky, which came out in 1189. MdM is a Belle Epoque scent for me, with more civet and lemon.

The top note of civet is sometimes too much for some, but let the full wearing take effect and you will love this. The drydown is a wonderful lavender floral with vanilla.

I think you are in for a treat! It's a great fragrance.

I just got this fragrance as well and it's superb. His review is spot on. I was expecting way more civet from the way they werre talking about, though.

Primrose, thank you very much for your reply. After reading some post, however, I'm a bit worried about this civet, as it seems it's a very formidable and (dare I say) intrusive scent. One gentleman described as smelling of a "soiled diaper"! Yipe!! I didn't realize that civet is taken from the scent gland near the tail of a Civet cat. It appears, though, that this is a common scent to add to a parfum.

Now, my curiosity has really been peaked!

By the way, when I read your quote by Alfred Noyes, I was immediately thrown back to those words being sung by Lorena McKennitt. Beautiful song!

Hednic,

I sure do hope so. Some of the reviews are a bit suspect..haha

Welcome and enjoy this great purchase!

I'm sure you will love MdM. If not, it will be good for you to smell it anyway. The civet comes through as a bit of a bad breath note, but is not overly powerful (like in Kouros, Orange Spice, or Citrus Paradisi). I don't think any mainstream perfume companies still use real civet (some very expensive natural perfumers do, though) and I'm aware of two popular fragrance grade substitutes made by Givaudan and Firmenich.

Gosh, I hope I have a positive review to post once I get it, Lovingthealien!..haha If you've read some of the earlier posts of some, it's a bit unnerving.

This is a beautiful day. There are TWO threads on the front page about Mouchoir de Monsieur. The perfume world seems just a little less bleak.

OK, bokaba...I will reserve extreme judgement for when it arrives and I'm able to wear it for a bit.

The Creed version of what, dnc?

Haha. Creed (and parfums d'Orsay for that matter) lists its fragrance as being released long before the company even opened. Creed and d'Orsay opened in c.1975 and c.1943 respectively but claim to have fragrances released, in some cases, two hundred years earlier. Primrose made a type on the launch year of Jicky (1889 I think).

Apologies Harry, bit of an in-joke here; bokaba is correct in what I was thinking.

haha..Fair enough, dnc and bokaba. I should imagine I'll have some catching up to do. Have either of you ever been to Eze, just on the outskirts of Monaco? They have an unbelievably brilliant perfume factory there, Fragonard. Although, I speak French fluently, I must say that I have to plead ignorance when it comes to fragrance jargon..as well as in English, for that matter.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome Harry. I will be interested to hear about your experience with MdM once it arrives. I came to it by way of my love for JICKY whose kinship to MdM is readily evident. I'm not sure either could be called a "love at first sniff" kind of fragrance but you never know.
Bon chance and enjoy!
It was certainly something I enjoyed very much in my first wearing. Just don't be shy with it, you can apply quite a bit and be okay.

I'm wearing it again today, and it's much warmer. What a difference! It smells so different! The tonka bean is less dominant and the mossy earthy side really shines through. It's very comforting and lovely, like a snuggly white fleece blanket.

I love Jicky, Shalimar and MdM.

I have been trying to find MdM online, especially the edp. Kindly share with us where you ordered it from and if it is the etd or the edp. Thanks!

Welcome. I think you will love Derby.

Mouchoir de Monsieur only comes in EdT concentration. Hope that helps.

Next month is Derby month, I think.

Ah, yes, I think so. Creed has been around since the Middle Ages.

I think Derby is one of my two best from Guerlain, along with Habit Rouge EDP.

Oh! Thanks for the information. I was hoping it came in EdP as MdM EdT disappears within minutes on my skin but I absolutely love that scent.

Where does one buy this online?

I don't know, sorry.
I always purchase directly from Guerlain.
If you live in a country with Guerlain boutiques / counters, I suggest you give one a call.
Don't know where you live and depending on the current exchange rate, fascination-perfumery in the UK used to be a good place for me to buy it from.

Thank you. I am thinking of ordering MdM and Vol de Nuit!

I was disgusted by MdM at first sniff - two weeks later I sniffed my sample again and bought a full bottle. Magical stuff
post #34 of 34
- Civet no longer comes from cat butt. All synthetic now. Still chockfull of baby vomit/poop goodness
- Jicky came out in 1189 and was Philip II's signature frag. His alchemists in Versailles had finally isolated coumarin and ethyl vanillin to make it possible seven hundred years before perfumers in Paris caught up.
