Is there any interest in an OUD SMACKDOWN?

I wonder if there is any interest in an "Oud Smackdown", or a thread that describes a good number of western Oud scents, western perfumes that contain oud? I am a rank amateur when it comes to reviewing and my descriptions are not as detailed and verbose as many/most of you. I do have a good number of samples and a few bottles of scents with oud. The bad part of this is that i don't have any pure oud to compare these with. Would love a half a drop but always have to buy more than I want or can afford to be honest.

Those scents which I have now are...

YSL M7 (vintage)
Bond No.9 New York Oud, Harrods Swarovski, Andy Warhol, Signature
Montale Black Aoud, Aoud Lime, Dark Aoud, Moon Aoud, White Aoud, Taj
Dior Leather Oud
Juicy Couture Dirty English
Slumberhouse Vikt
Tom Ford Oud Wood, Arabian Wood (does this have Oud?)
SoOud Asmar, Kanz, Hajj
Juliet Has A Gun Midnight Oud
Amouage Homage
M. Micallef Aoud Gourmet
L'Artisan Al Oudh
Le Labo Oud 27
And an unknown oil that was simply labeled "Oudh Amber from India"

If there is any interest I will eventually start a thread where I will describe these with my own limited vocabulary and biased opinions!

(I probably should get some more samples too. PLEASE SUGGEST or message me!

Dior's Leather Oud is amazing...

It's a beast (and I mean that in a good way). The oud in it is more burning oud wood, reminding me of burning Japanese incense that contains aloeswood (oud), rather than evoking resin.

Couple of obvious ones missing...

Creed Royal Oud
Dior Fahrenheit Absolute
Histoires de Parfums Petroleum
Mona di Orio Oud

Oud Luban by Aftelier is the most outstanding Oud blend I've experienced, and I've sampled everyone in all the previous posts on this thread.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS - $15 for 7 Samples...not sure how big of an inventory they carry. Heck of a deal.

Bring it on!

As was discussed elsewhere, there are different types of pure ouds, so there's really no holy grail. Hedonist, who will probably chime in, considers Leather oud as the closest thing to oud chips (that is, the ones you burn, which smell different from the oil one wears). Some of those in the list don't smell like oud at all but are great nonetheless (see the raunchy Oud27).

Sample pure oud by kilian....it's the most authentic
post #17 of 40
Oud 27 if my favorite. the divine animalic concoction that surrounds the oud is like nothing else.
I really like fragrances where oud is the star....I've sampled many as well and my top 3 are oud 27, harrods oud and pure oud. I really wanted to like monas but it's too fem and not much oud. Montales come off too fem for me as well except for dark aoud and aoud cuir arabie. Al oudh is great .... Focused on spice more but the oud is there holding it up. New york oud (wheres the oud, lol) signature...gack!!! Incense oud is nice....more of an incense scent but very nice. Secret oud ....very feminine rose...although at times it comes off totally different with oakmoss and is masculine.

Leather oud is great but if I'm going for oud I'm grabbing oud 27 and if I'm going for leather I'm going for mona's cuir....both are better and have more gusto and depth than leather oud imo

OK, I will, but I am hoping for a few more samples and need to order or beg some samples! And your reviews are so precise and descriptive I hope you are not disappointed in my opinions, which I am sure will differ from yours...

I can contribute a couple of samples of actual pure oud oils if you might be interested to incorporate them into your review scope.
Akahina, how about bringing up the number of participants to 30 and we can have a Oud Royal Rumble!

Much interested in hearing your findings.
You can't leave out Oud Caravan by AbdesSalaam Attar (Profumo.it). Samples are available from TPC. And although difficult to find, Roja Dove's Aoud should be included, too. Sorry, I know I'm just making it more difficult - but I could be making it easier on down the line!

I don't see why I should be disappointed...if your opinion differs from mine it just means we have different tastes, not a big deal Fragrances are subjective right?

Go ahead Akahina....

I am still working on this if anyone is interested.

I now have 34 western fragrances with oud as a note listed, 8 samples of real oud (mostly a drop or a smear, thanks to a couple of very generous basenoters and 2 artificial oud bases that I intend to dilute down to parfum strength with no other notes just so I can see what these smell like alone. I have been advised that these artificial ouds are best "smelled" with other ingredients but since my nose is not trained to understand real vs. artificial oud, I want to experience them in their pure form so I can critically examine what I am smelling. Makes sense to me anyway to do it this way.

I am still looking to acquire several (OK, many) more fragrances to add to this sampling spree! There are about a dozen more I really want to add to the list but finding them all (or a single source where I can get most/all of them is a challenge for a person that has little time to devote to the hunt! Most interested in finding some Arabian attars to add to the list.

In the end this "smackdown" may be of little value to anyone, but it will be a journey of discovery for me, and if my journey is of even the smallest value to a single person it will be a success in my eyes. In the end, I will buy something! Want to find that one or two oud scent(s) that I adore...if I don't have it already!

I just got a small decant of Bruckner's Oud 1 and have not smelled this yet. I am quite excited to try this one.

So which ones are you still looking to acquire?
by kilian incense oud and pure oud would be good additions I think, but a very good list.
the oils are also quality stuff and the addition of cambodi oils is a good idea.
Can't wait to see which will reign supreme
post #34 of 40
This lost is really helpful. I was asking an SA at Bergdorf Goodman if Oud Wood actually had oud in it and he could only reply that he assumed it did. Thanks.
It'd be interesting to see Amouage Epic Man, 10 Corso Como, and maybe one of the exclusives from Histoires de Parfums and The Different Company added to the list. Though of course, really, there's no end.
Just curious whether OP ever got to doing an oud comparison he envisioned.

I have not had time to do this yet but it is on my list of things to do...soon. Please understand my delay. This has been a very busy few months. I've sold my house that I was in for 30 years and moved from at 5 bedroom house into a small condo...that's just the beginning. I have quite a few samples and when I get settled in I still have every intention of starting this substantial project. I can only offer my appology for the delay in starting this project. 2012 has been a very stressful and difficult year and I look forward to starting this as temperatures become cooler. In the end I will find a new scent...perhaps one of those pure oud oils. Best wishes and thank you.
No worries, I was just wondering. I hope things get less stressful and you have plenty of time to sample, enjoy and share your thoughts when you are ready!
