I think it is important for us to trust our instincts but be open to new ideas too. In the case of B I really always thought myrrh and no incense, spice but then we all start getting influenced by the others, which is good in certain cases and bad in others but of course there is no punishment for being wrong and it is great that we have such nice hosts that never make us feel lilke we are stupid))

Exactly, everything you said. I got some notes as well, but then changed them or added to them thinking I must be wrong cause I am a newb. Even if I didn't get a note..I would still play with it cause I have less experience. I've learned, it's personal, a personal experience..if anything, don't read people's responses..at least for a while. Go with what YOU get. Forget everyone else. Or trying to impress people or fitting in..just go with your personal experience. I think I am learning some today. And go with your gut..don't complicate it. That's what I've learned on blind sniffs. So, that's cool, learning is always good.

Edit: It must be fun to be a host and see all of us try to put the puzzle together.

Oh and OV, I was really impressed with the myrrh..I was like, she is so right! And good call! If I hadn't gotten distracted..and wouldn't have gone off course..it's like looking for an hour for your wallet, only to realize you've been holding it the entire time.

Good points. This was the reason why I asked you to initially post your overall impressions without even reading what the others have said. The other step (in my mind) was to be able to discuss and argue in favor of your choices with the other participants, so that only the strongest ideas get to be advanced to the next stage where they get either confirmed or invalidated.
Either way you all are great sniffers and you did a great job. If the format were the same as in some previous sniffs, you three would have guessed A and B in about 30minutes. I made it more difficult on purpose.
C might prove a difficult one, although I promise it is nicer than Realities and probably won;t give anyone headaches.
Enjoy your weekend!
What a team you are! I'm impressed, and I very much enjoyed reading along (and making several incorrect guesses along the way, ha ha). The hosts have chosen and are executing a very clever theme, aren't they? Can't wait to see what's up for Mystery Fragrance C!
Wow, that sounds scary DD and yes you have been very very evil)).

Thanks Haunani, I did not respond to the lavender, which I think you suggested as I am a huge fan of lavender but never say never, I did not want to say that I would never miss that as you just never know)).
Ya, I went with the lavender..I figured maybe Haunani was onto something..and again, that feeling of being a newb..so sorry. My gut said not really cause where I live lavender is all over. But that feeling of being a newb came in. I was like, if there was lavender I would have gotten it early on cause like I said, lavender is near where I live and lol, I live like about 4 miles from a lavender farm. LOL. I think I am really getting this now. Getting how to go about it more anyway. Lol, I didn't read DD's mentioning of not reading other's posts for a bit..lol.
Hi guys, I am on my lunch break, but congratulations.

Kalli, it was your "root beer" thing that made me read several reviews here on BN and the bulb went on in my head. For H. -- "root beer" is something very American and virtually unknown and unappreciated by Europeans. I am not a fan, but last night Myrrhe Ardente smelled just like root beer. I also would repeat especially for you -- spit it out, first guesses are almost always right with perfumes.

OV, ask DD what was the book she enjoyed last year. I know the answer, it is by JK Toole. Hahaha. You are a lady and a great sport. And nobody is stupid, Ne-ver.

Guaiac is often used in masculine perfumes, and I thought that was not aoud (I have Montales and others here), not teak, not sandalwood, not even rosewood I first thought, the only one left out was guaiac.

Gotta go, will read more tonight.
Lol, thanks, have a great weekend Twolf and everyone, I will get to see you on Monday, then onto exciting and very very difficult to guess C thanks to our very evil host DD)).

That guaiac, I have never smelled it before and thus had no clue, in fact the oud was because all along I have been scared that I would get oud just cuz I am not as familiar with it)) I have these ideas like in case of A I was adamant about honeysuckle which was totally wrong and now I know why, I hate peony too and it also makes me sick.

Now really signing off as I am starving, see you later.

Dude!!!! I nearly fainted! Cause I did read that last year...Thank god I remembered about the "recent reads" thread! phewww..I though you were a witch! Well, you still might be!
Europeans don't like root beer? Unknown? Gosh, I pretty much have it daily lately. Barqs is the best, followed by Mug, then A&W. One hasn't lived until they've had root beer or a root beer float. I love root beer, have it in the fridge all the time. IMHO..you all are missing out! Lol!

I guess I will sign off as well. Bye everyone!

kalli I've been living in the US for quite some time now. But I am not sure I know the taste of root beer. I probably tried it once...but nope...I don;t have the slightest desire to drink one. I have learned to like peanut butter though. Just not in chocolate, candy or other sweets.
I do not like everything DD mentioned + (huge personal dislike!) popcorn, another food not very popular from where I hail. Peanut butter -- never say never, but I can't stand the smell, the texture (I know it comes in creamy and crunchy), or LAP Bois Farine. I wanted to get me a small bottle of rootbear, but we did not have any at the restaurant, so I will try next week.

DD, the choice of fragrances is wonderful so far (who would have doubted?). No, my Wardrobe is pretty current and it was my first encounter -- of the third kind? -- with Myrrhe Ardente. I liked the way you did not rush with note confirmation, gently pushing us into the correct wood territory, giving us time to sniff all over again and think about what we are sniffing. About witches, well, you said it!
What? There is no peanut butter in Europe? I don't know about that, lol. I could live off it. You got Skippy chunky, which is pretty ok. You can get the all natural peanut butter where the oil rises to the top, which I like, cause it doesn't have any sugar added. You just stir it up and you're good to go. Almond butter is super good too. Do you guys have any other nutty butter? Like hazelnut or almond? There's peanut butter n crackers, and of course, the best candy ever..Reeses Peanut Butter Cup! Dark chocolate or Big Cup kind. So, no PB&J's in Europe? That's pretty much a staple here. Lol. No popcorn? You gotta try the movie theater butter or kettle corn if you have a sweet tooth. Or caramel corn. Mmm, root beer float, you take a few scoops of vanilla ice cream and put it in a glass, and pour root beer on top. Get a spoon and a straw and you are good to go. It's good. Missin' out!

Lol, I noticed the backup sniffer, Bookhouseshell, from MN got the root beer, lol. That makes sense that the Americans picked up on it..others didn't. Mmm, makes sense now. Lol, I might have to get a bag of Reeses Pieces and some Jiffy Pop now, lol.
Kalli, I am a first generation American, have been here for over 14 years. Reeses is the epitome of what we dislike about American-manufactured candy. We would do almonds and hazelnuts (Nutella, if you want them with chocolate) any day.

About your Wardrobe: it shows as "Undisclosed" in your posts. Go to You Profile, Settings and one of the first tabs -- I believe -- you have to unclick it -- is "Show Wardrobe in Posts". (Kiliwia is pretty instrumental about it, ask her if you have problems).

I sniffed C, making notes. How about you?
Hehe, I'll shut up about American junk food. Nutella is some good stuff though.

Were we supposed to wait until Monday to sniff?
Thread Starter
Morning ladies. OV does not have internet so I though we could postpone this until Monday and then have a slow sniff again.
kalli, I think you can find PB in Europe but it is rare. I know I bought some more than 10 years ago and I thought it was terrible (I did not know you are supposed to eat it with jelly). After I moved here more than 8 years ago, I sort of started to like it. I only like the natural one with no salt added. I like on sandwiches or in Thai food. My students told me about apples and PB and I was shocked. I tried and it is OK but not special. On the other hand Reeses and other sweets with peanut butter are among the few deserts I could probably say no to.
Root beer I am sure I never tried before coming here. I tried it here just because everyone was telling me to and did not like it, same with ginger ale. To be perfectly honest nowadays I don't drink any soda and I find even Coca Cola revolting.
I love popcorn, but I eat the healthy kind, organic, air popped, no butter, little salt. How un-American, huh?

It drove me nuts for the longest time that I kept smelling cinnamon in Love, Chloe and it is not listed among the notes, well, until I started learning and read about tolu balsam. My mom (she is a doctor) says that tolu balsam is such a similar compound to cinnamon that they are listed as compounds causing cross allergies in people, in other words if you are allergic to cinnamon, you will be tolu balsam too. So not only it smells very cinnamic but also must have a very similar composition to it. Hence, we can sometimes confuse notes or sometimes they could be there but not listed as we know. But anyhow no such thing exsits as smelling wrong, that is part of the fun about this.

Fascinating! I did not know that about tolu balsam.

Myrrh Ardente smells like Salonpas to me. Now I know why.

Root beer! My mom hates it. I love it. I burned out on Barq's though, kalli, cuz I used to live near a Barq's plant when I was little. A&W is my current favorite!

It's best not to drink soda..I think when I start though, I end up drinking it all the time. I actually prefer to snack on light popcorn, very little salt or butter. The other kinds, while good, I don't eat a lot of them just cause they just aren't a snack anymore, it becomes like a meal.

Haha Alona, that's one way for me to get burnt out on Barqs, or would it just fuel the fire? lol.

My husband was just telling me about spruce beer, a Canadian thing..sounds very interesting. Though, he mentioned it's similar to ginger ale a bit but with a hints of spruce. I love the idea of a spruce in a drink..I'd go for the non-alcoholic version though.
I love wood anything though..that's why my fave type of fumes are floral-woody musks & woody aromatics. Too bad I am not doing well with the musk part lately.

Anyway..so I guess this will reconvene Monday then huh? Looking forward to it, should be fun.
Wow, what a great sniff with sample B.
Everyone doing so wonderfully!
DD, I told you in a PM, but will tell again in public, you are such a fantastic host. Thank you for putting yourself out there, what a great learning experience for me.
Wolfie, again, told you in a PM, so sorry you were in pain. I was worried about you. I knew it had to be something really serious. Are you any better?
Kalli, official notes or everyday associations like "root beer" are equally helpful! Trust in yourself please, please, please, you are a great sniffer and a superb team player!
OVincze, it truly warmed my heart that you enjoyed the blind sniff. I absolutely 100% agree with your words on what a great experience it is and how wonderful it would be for everyone to have it. It reminds me my own joy and excitement I felt after the first blind sniff.

And of course I have to say something about peanut butter and root beer since I'm another first generation US citizen Yep, still getting used to but butters, and still cannot handle root beer -- simply too sweet for me. Of course, now I would really want to sniff some to see what was the similarity y'all were catching. Don't wanna miss out!

On the other hand, my colleague moved to Europe with his family and children, and folks had to send them huge jars of peanut butter because kids just couldn't live without it.

Till Monday, team! I will be all yours on Monday, on the boards from sunrise (since it raises so late ) till way after sunset -- for whatever it's worth. Mwah! Hugs.
Just could not keep this thread in second position. Hahaha

W., Mr.T was having withdrawls without PB during our month in Europe. I know, he likes organic type with the oil on top, best.

Will wait to discuss until Monday. I will be available almost all day. Have to update my Wardrobe now with the two scents sniffed and these three dozens received in the mail.
One more thing about root beer and I will shut it! If one is going to have root beer, it is best to get the bottled kind, the more expensive kind. Chilled of course. Some can be on the sweet side, so it's best to try a few varieties out. Oh and p-nut butter, it's not mandatory one eats it with jelly. P-nut butter and banana & p-nut butter and honey are good sandwiches as well. Oh and p-nut butter cookies are really so good. Oh and p-nut butter and ketchup sandwiches-LOL, just kidding.

So, where is everyone on here from? Different parts of Europe?
I am from the Winter Wonderland, aka the corner of NE, SD and IA, formerly from TX, originally from Central Europe (Prague) with parents of different nationalities.

You?

kalli I am from Romania. I actually liked PB once I realized it comes in unsalted varieties. I prefer the crunchy variety and yes I tried it with bananas too, quite good. The problem is that it has way too many calories. I never tried it with honey but maybe I will. But I think it needs something tangy to balance it.
One thing you guys have right, Hershey's Kisses are pretty bad! The plain Hershey bars too. Though I do like the extra dark and their nugget varieties..but ya, much better chocolate out there. I had a Ritter Sport bar..and I ate that so fast, so good I didn't care about calories or fat, really too good. I prefer imported chocolate for sure.

Anyway..about ready to get this blind sniff on, mmm?.

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a great weekend. Well, I am not reading anything until I have written a post, like always but then I cannot wait to read up on all the news. Unfortunately, I had a terrible stuffy nose all nite and a.m., maybe a cold or allergies but I can still smell the fume of course, the nose spray might hurt my sense of smell but we will see.

Hmm, initial thoughts I am going to start out with, this fume is the closest to my taste and actually I am finding some resemblance to Love, Chloe in this, it is very powdery, clean and soapy sort of that cosmetics smelling fume and very vintage in character, perhaps a bit too much for my taste. It is a well composed fragrance in my opinion and quite beautiful (I still prefer Love, Chloe or something with a bit added extra faceting to it but nevertheless, I think it is a pretty nice fume). Now that I have widened my horizons thanks to you I prefer B, I wore Myrrhe Ardente on Saturday and it wore beautifully.

Ok, before I get too sidetracked, this is very definitely a feminine entry in my opinion, very ladylike, reminds me a bit of fume Estee Lauder would create. My immediate thoughts are very 50's feel but the fume could date earlier I just imagine Liz Taylor or Audrey Hepburn wearing something like this dressed in an LBD and wearing red lipstick with it. Since that is often my style I can see myself liking this but I have a feeling Kalli will hate it)).

Now, after some general thoughts I will attempt a first guess of some notes. There is powderiness, muskiness too and it has an animalic base, civet perhaps. It does not have a fruity feel to it at all but will keep sniffing, perhaps there is something in the opening as it has a slight champagney feel in the opening but not convinced yet. Flowers, I definitely got lilac, perhaps some lily could be lily of the valley as that can have a slight animalic feel to it to me Diorissimo (vintage EDP) also has that but again need to think and rethink that. There could be heliotrope, tuberose again came to my mind, maybe hyacinth?

I have already talked about the base I am thinking of rice because of the resemblance to Love, Chloe a bit but not sure what that would even smell like as a note. Powder, musk yes and again civet. Ok, now I will rest my case for now)) time to go back to sniff again.

Good morning, OV. Great to read your description of C. You were the only one, so you can read previous posts if you want. We were discussing fascinating topics such as root beer, popcorn, peanut butter...
What funny discussions)) Well, I do know root beer but cannot stand it, do not think I ever tried it but hate the smell of it, you are not saying B had that, are you? Well, I am Hungarian but I lived in the US for 9 years. I remember now that somoeone, was it Warum is from SF? I lived in the SF Bay Area but moved back to Hungary about 6 years ago. I have to admit that I am a Diet Coke addict)) I think I picked that up in the US. I have always been a coffee addict but Gosh did I love Starbucks? I could not wait till they opened here in Hungary. Now I never drink it anymore, like everything here it is so horribly overpriced. I mean incomes are horrid in Hungary but yet prices are a lot more than in the US, it sure makes it hard. Peanut Butter Gosh they could make me run off the Earth with that stuff I have always found it horribly disgusting)) but sometimes I felt like eating it)) I think it is a European thing because Nutella is so much better and they have even better stuff like almond paste with Belgian dark chocolate and coffee, now that... ok I have always been a little allergic to peanuts and cannot stand them, I am very allergic to walnuts but like hazelnuts and love almonds and no problems with them)) now I am really OT but I see you guys had fun over the weekend here, will be nice to talk to you again!
Hi DD, nice to see you. No problem I have work to do too so will wait.
Well, I could be really wrong of course. But this also resembles Krasnaya Moskva or Communist fumes ROFL.
Thread Starter
lol OV. I think I can divulge this much: it is not Krasnaya Moskva (never tried it) or any other Communist fume.
Eck. Musky white mess! I don't like it! No headaches? Lol, ya right. Powdery. Musk. And I am getting a really heady yukky gardenia. But most gardenia is yukky, lol. Mmm, but it's like a gardenia on crack..with like an off-putting ending. Like a gardenia that's been sitting in a vintage/thrift shop. Tuberose? That's all I get so far.
Yeah, I thought so but cannot say it has not crossed my mind that you would surprise us with a Communist grandma fume)). I could send you a decant of Krasnaya Moskva)).

A little story: when my Russian friends visited me they asked me whether I liked chocolate and Russian champagne/vodka. I said sure. When they arrived they brought along 8 bottles of Russian champagne, 6 bottle of Russian vodka, 5 original Russian chocolate bars and surprise, surprise Krasnaya Moskva, I about died, it seems that if they do not underdo anything, then came the light drinking which to them meant a bottle of Vodka per person ...
Lol, I knew Kalli would say this)) Oh yeah those favorite flowers and musk!
Lol, we started right?
Thread Starter
Yes, ladies. We started.
Haha, ya, OV I have a thing with anything gardenia. I only like it if I can't really smell it..or it's just well blended with other notes. But usually, if there is something white and yuk, it's gardenia or something like it. Yes, it was a very intellectual conversation earlier. Root beer, popcorn and p-nut butter. Very enlightening, lol.
Ov, I agree on the lily or something like that. Smells like a myriad of white. Also...agree about that opening. I get mostly floral but there is something on top.

I like your description, OV, very well detailed. I agree a woman putting on red lipstick, at the vanity..must be all that powder.
Well, I actually thought because it is powdery and musky. But I am not sure here about the gardenia, I am thinking more along the lines of the flowers I said above, lilac perhaps violet again, tuberose, there could be gardenia just not getting it as strongly here, maybe a lily or actually lily of the valley ,,, perhaps heliotrope, hyacinth?
Since I am likening this to Krasnaya Moskva well carnation? I think pretty heavy florals in this one
post #461 of 798
Well, I was getting gardenia but it's different than gardenia maybe? Bad ending to it..that's why I mentioned the tuberose.
Thread Starter
Good job ladies, keep it up!
To add I wonder if this is a complicated juice with perhaps lots of notes which could make it tough to distinguish the individual notes, I again wonder if there is bergamot in the top, there is something in the opening that has a spicier, bit sour smell to it. I think there could be a spice coriander or something, I think there may be a hint of vanilla again and Kalli what do you think of ylang ylang? I am not sure just trying to identify the heavier florals in there.
It's like I rolled in baby powder right now lol..and my cat is walking all over my comp..lol..he's wanting to participate. He's hoping for a tuna note maybe.
Good morning, ladies. Now that I have baked some bread, I am ready to participate.

To recap: musky white powdery gardenia mess, white dated florals, you both said. Some other white florals, civet, perhaps. EL in feel.

Agree with you both. C on me: clean soapy chalk, very much in the venue of Joubert Blue Waltz, something that your American grandmothers enjoyed in their earlier days. Perhaps, an attempt to restore a well-known scent that they could not afford, hence the Dreams and Illusions connection.

And remember, although we are entitled to our opinions, we are trying to analize what we are smelling, not just limiting ourselves with "I hate it" or "I would not wear it under normal circumstances".
Very often gardenia has that carnation spicy edge, really.
I really can't stand to smell this. Price range? Mmm, about 40-45? My cat just typed in 98, lol..I don't think that's the case. Mmm, spice, gosh..I can't get over the white mess. Sorry. I need to let this settle a bit, lol.

Twolf, what kind of bread? Last night I experimented with baking pita pockets but they did not end up that good, although they are still edible.
Coriander is very spicy to my nose..I don't think it's coriander. Sorry about my comments about the scent..I'll shut it...
I love baked bread and would rather smell..oh, I said I will shut it. I love homemade bread.
Oooh, something about this is turning fruity.
Lol my cat really prefers Clinique AE and when I am wearing Wrappings she wants to eat me)). Yeah price range sounds about right perhaps 45-50 or something along those lines, I like it too. Yes Twolf it could be the gardenia but I have smelled that quite often before and to be gardenia is not as heavy as what I am smelling here, hence the carnation, perhaps tuberose, lily...
It's like a fruit on top. EL vibe, sure..though this is not an EL from the ones I've tested. I like quite a few from EL. I see this at TJ Maxx or something(a discount store in America).
Yeah I thought there was somethings fruity which is why I mentioned bergamot perhaps, the reason I said champagne is something about this reminds me of YSL Champagne too. I really need to look up those juices as far as composition.
I smell fruit more than spice. What is that fruitiness to it? I think it may be a fruit I don't like.
and forgot to add the lilac I got initially, ylang ylang and yes I think there is civet or at least I am getting something very animalic. I cannot find some of the fumes I have mentioned ROFL but this does sort of confirm to me that it is an older juice, not sure I am making sense?
Thread Starter
OV could you please summarize the notes you smelled so far? You already named a large number of notes and I don't want you to later forget about them. Maybe kalli and Twolf can confirm some of them or make lists of their own.
Fruits I generally don't like in fumes brainstorm...mango, peach(though I do like Tresor In Love-so much for the lasting power on that though), guava is something that is a hit or miss for me but I kinda like guava a bit. Wait, I am getting a wood now. A soft, smooth woody..perhaps a sandalwood?
Yeah I agree about that Kalli, vintage 50's America, perhaps Macy's but could be discount I think it may be better than that though as far as quality. Sure about the EL, I mentioned it as a similar vibe yes but I do love EL and have worn a lot of EL scents, this one has similarities to perhaps White Linen, what do you think?
