I hate to derail the thread, but what the heck...

This is a very idiosyncratic top 5! If there's been a past thread in which you explain your approach, I'd love to read it.

Considering he has well over 1,000 bottles in his collection, I would expect something very different for his top five.

I'll agree though - Hednic, it would be great to read your thoughts on these five favorites.

Hi guys, first post in a long time. Why not start with a classic top-something thread.

I still don't quite know how I assemble my top lists, since some of these I don't wear but appreciate (like Yerbamate) and some I wear constantly but don't really think they are one of the greatest perfumes ever made (like SMN Eau de Cologne). I guess it's some sort of balancing act. Maybe we should divide these lists to aesthetically most valuable and to the ones we enjoy wearing the most.

In random order.

Eau d'Hermes
Mouchoir de Monsieur
Derby (vintage)
Helmut Lang EdC
LV Uomo
Santal Noble (vintage)
Eau des Iles (vintage)
Racine (vintage)
C&S No. 88 (vintage)
Iris Silver Mist
Fumerie Turque
L'Air du Desert Marocain
Vetiver Extraordinaire
Musc Ravageur (it's vulgar and obnoxious, but can't help loving it)
Eau Sauvage
L'Homme de Coeur
Shalimar
SMN Eau de Cologne
Yerbamate
Eau Lente

My first BN post. Been a lurker for years.

47 y.o. Catholic priest/professor living in New Orleans. For years—before I became Catholic—I had a Fred. Malle budget and Avon tastes. Now, it's just the opposite. I don't own 20 fragrances, but the ones I do own are nice enough:

Guerlain Vetiver (signature)
Guerlain Habit Rouge
Lalique Enre Noir
Bucheron Jaipur (my third bottle)
Molinard Patchouly (never wear this in public)

And I'm waiting on a double handful of samples from Aedes de Venustas. Not that I can afford any of their offerings!

Most of the ones I own are too heavy for the Nawlins' humidity, so I'm looking for something green/fresh, non-aquatic/ozonic for the rapidly approaching heat. Suggestions? My skin burns through a scent like a tourist on Bourbon St. during Madri Gras.

Today, I'm wearing for the first time a sample of Cathedral from BPAL. Very strong vanilla, but I like the incense.

Happy sniffin', Philip

Welcome to Basenotes franeri! Very interesting first post, do stick around! About your question, I think you should try LV Uomo. I think you will not be dissapointed. Very refreshing without being fresh in banal way. It's also quite affordable.
Welcome franeri! Big Guerlain fan myself. You could try Terre d'Hermes and Comme des Garcons Zagorsk.
Thank you Johnny and Marais! I will look around for some LV Uomo. I've tried Td'H and I'm afraid it smells like BO on me. The CdG Zagorsk might be out of my price range, but I'll look around. . .it certainly sounds like something I'd like. Loewe 7 looks good too. It appears to be a BN favorite. I've found the good taste and advice of BN'ers to be invaluable in directing me to Guerlain!

I lived in Rome for three years as a student, i.e., broke. Imagine being in Rome among all those great fragrances and unable to buy any of them! Maybe I'll save my pennies and make a return trip one day.

Got my first batch of AdV samples today! I've tried Rose Homme, CdG Zagorsk, and Carnal Flower so far. The Zagorsk blew me away. Wow. The Carnal Flower is beautiful but too feminine for me. Big bearded guy here who really can't pull off anything to "feminine." But the Rose Homme is perfect. Dusty, floral, but still masculine enough to squeak by. Might have to get a full bottle of this stuff.

Welcome to Basenotes!

I second the suggestion of Lorenzo Villoresi's Uomo. I think Villoresi's Acqua di Colonia would also work nicely.

Now to see if I can even come up with twenty fragrances that I have...

Writing this list down made me realize how much I love Guerlain. Given the list, am I an excessive lover of lavender?
