Axe Anarchy = La Nuit de L'Homme

Looks like our friends at Unilever whipped out their gas chromatograph and "divined" their latest creation by "paying homage" to YSL's top seller La Nuit de L'homme. I do have to hand it to them, they've made an impressive clone and I'll cop to buying a can of this as my car air freshener, for 3.95 why the hell not. Took me a while to figure it out; then I sprayed a bit on a business card, forgot it in my pocket and the next morning reached for my EdP of La Nuit and in a flash recognized the smell as being incredibly similar to the card. I bought a can the next day. This one, and Dark Temptations are actually pleasant to smell. Still I'm bothered rewarding this kind of blatant intellectual property theft. Givenchy should consider pursuing legal action.

Hey, I'm gonna have to check this out! I could really like this.

Personally, I'm OK with fragrance fashion theft, as long as it's not going into too much of a direct competitor. So when I smelled some of the better aquatics being "homaged" in Febreze, I took it as a high compliment to some of those scents.

More than that, I try to look at it from a technical viewpoint. Getting 80-90% of a designer scent's goodness into a $4 spray can is something of a marvel. Same with getting something that's almost Hermès into something functional like Febreze or Tide. I almost wonder if the fine frag perfumers see it the same way - sort of like:

"Hey you guys over in mass market and functional - if you can actually get my stuff to come in under a budget of $0.25 per can - or into a godawful mix of surfactants and bleach? Respect!"

I know you're not exactly an "Ann fan", but I think she's really done some great stuff for fragrance as a whole, when you look at the big picture. Just sayin'!

So I fully intended to call "bullshit" on this one. Went to WalMart today to test out the Anarchy, but all the cans were wrapped. So, I scratched and sniffed the little sticker on top, thinking to myself: "nothing like L'HN!" So, I bought it and brought it home and first thing I did was spray one arm with the Axe and the other arm with L'HN. Jesus! They are similar...Anarchy doesn't even try to lie about what it is! Amazing! And, good call.

Oh no... the apocalypse is nigh. I have always scoffed at Axe, but if this smells like La Nuit then I am going to have to try it. I thought I was bad for using Sean Jean Unforgivable Deo stick with Creed MI, but I can't believe these prices! lol Maybe I will give a friend money to buy it for me.

OK, before I clicked enter I came across this INCREDIBLE video PLEASE watch This kid is the best!! and I'm sure this is the demographic for Axe... maybe I will rethink

Too funny! I feel a little like a genius campared to him after watching that, thanks for the confidence boost!
Op good call on the comparison. Over the holidays I bought 3 axe gift packs ( just like the kid in the video They where on sale for $5 I figured why not. I never opened them, so I tried the anarchy out and you are right on.
Another one I tried smelled kind of like A*men

Anarchy has not yet been released in stores and malls where I live, but it makes me curious enough to try it as soon as it does

Copying a smell is not intellectual property theft, or at least not legally punishable.

You are correct. It is that last ten per cent that is difficult.

Luca Turin once wrote that fine fragrance had come so far down in the world, in terms of quality of ingredients and originality of composition, that there was not much difference between it and functional fragrance any more.

On that note: http://boisdejasmin.typepad.com/_/20...ragrances.html

I found this to be an interesting read on fine vs. functional fragrances.

Now if they just came out with one that smells like Bond Harrods Oud, I'll be set.

That was very interesting; thank you for highlighting it.

^ that link was a great read! Kinda brings things into perspective. I'm asking myself now what the difference is between a successful opera singer and Lady Gaga.... the only answer I can think of is $149.99 million dollars and a slightly different wardrobe...

So I bought Anarchy, and am very sad for YSL. Not because they have been copied, but because La Nuit L'Homme smells like this. I was hoping it would smell better. Honestly almost every Axe smells more intersting than Anarchy. I am not saying it smells bad just really boring. I would rather wear ADG than this.

Have you honestly given each a proper wearing to know how similar or dissimilar they actually are? Just curious.

Tried it today. Smells nothing like La Nuit. Smells like a cheap spicy/sweet mess.
I tried both today, one on each wrist, and I agree that they smell a lot alike.
it had to happen eventually, I guess...
