Hey Everyone

I have made a whole lot of blind buys and i find my self regretting it because they just dont work for me, and majority of the perfumes sold in this part of the world are fake so i want to start asking my friend in London to buy them from good stores there and send them to me in Lagos...

Based on the reviews from the basenotes, i can see A*MEN is very good, i love silage and projection.... What Other Colognes can you recommend?

My Favourites are

Burberry Brit
Polo Blue
Boss Orange
212 VIP

Welcome! There are so many. I'll just name two and let others add their own:

Dior Homme
Guerlain Derby

Burberry London
La Nuit de L'homme
Gucci Pour Homme II
Bleu de Chanel

I feel are pretty safe to me at least as suggestioins.

Which blind buys didn't work for you and why didn't you like them? If you tell us what you didn't like it will help with recommendations.

@wood500 ,, i bought Davidoff CoolWater... ( i just dont like the sharp smell and its longevity and silage just doesn't work for me.... I also got Polo Blue, Chanel Allure and Polo Green (They All Last for about 1hour or there about),, I think i got fake bottles of those 3 because there are a lot of fake fragrance shops here in Nigeria... A friend from New York got me the Davidoff.

Is your part of Nigeria a hot humid place? Personally I can't imagine A*Men going over well if that's the case. I know people with disagree with me but A*Men is so thick and heavy, the thought of wearing it in hot humid weather just doesn't sound appealing to me. Lighter fragrances I would wear include Live Jazz, Aventus, Virgin Island Water, Millésime Impérial (or a cheaper copy such as Unforgivable), Guerlain Homme, Chrome....I'm sure people who know more about fragrances than me can add on more opinions

Safest blind buys ever:

Armani Acqua Di Gio- Girls love this
Curve- Girls love this
Abercrombie Fierce- Girls love this

And if girls loving your cologne aren't a contributing factor, then I recommend:

Armani Acqua Di Gio
Curve
Abercrombie Fierce

Those 3 are as safe as a blind buy can be. They are people pleasers and won't offend anybody.

I'm new as well but I would recommend Bleu De Chanel....I find it to be quite an appealing fragrance and it gets me a fair amount of compliments. Projection is good, and longevity is quite good as well (6+ hours). I took me a little while to get used to it, but I now love it...I use it as my work scent in the fall/spring. Overall its definitely a great, safe fragrance to buy w/o breaking the bank.

On another note....I do have to say I hate Milan

FORZA JUVE!!!!!

The no-brainers:

Aqua di Geo
Issey Miyake
I think Fierce is a great starter scent but I'm under the impression that it's pretty fucking hard to get your hands on it outside of the states.
I would say either La Nuit de L'homme or L'homme, I don't think having both is quite necessary
Terre d'Hermes
Dior Homme

You might consider grounding your collection in 2-3 great fresh/green/citrus scents before moving on (the Allure you have is really good). The first 3 on the above list would be great. I strongly recommend Light Blue for Women, it's just a really good citrus with a strong peach/apple opening. After that, you can branch out into woods (L'homme, La Nuit, Terre) and then maybe pick up Dior Homme and Angel Men. This all depends on your local climate though.

Welcome.
A*Men isn't a safe blindbuy IMO.
Boss Bottled and Gucci Guilty (as you like Boss Orange);
Polo Black and Double Black;
Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin;
212 Sexy Men;
CH Men;
Un Jardin Après La Mousson.

AdG on me.
Clinique Happy Men and Bvlgari Aqva are good options for hot weather.

L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme ... the top notes burst forth with an invigorating, yet perplexing, citrus; then the heart revels itself in a floral and spicy concoction; and the soothing, yet oriental, woody base rears its lovely presence ... excellent sillage and longevity ... its originality makes for a somewhat futuristic journey ...

Since you live in a hot climate and like projection:

Acqua di Gio
L'eau d'issey
post #20 of 32
Based on what you liked, I agree with people who recommended the following:

You can wear them during warm season or in hot places.

Also, A*Men is not a safe blind buy. Its projection and longevity are great, but some notes may turn you off. Sniff first, try on skin if you can.

Welcome to the community. Are there any fragrances or oils that are indigenous to Nigeria or any interesting fragrance customs? Curious minds want to know.

Oh yeah have you considered le male? It's a great signature scent for someone starting a collection but it's also something to try before buying. It's strong sillage and projection but not too harsh.

Welcome to Basenotes!

Just one question: What's the postal system like in Nigeria? Is it efficient? Are there any restrictions on sending or receiving fragrances?

I'm only asking because, in my experience, it's very rare for a recommendation to suit your personal tastes - you really have to sample away in order to truly discover what's out there. Yes, it can get pricey sometimes but it's a hell of a lot more rewarding than constant blind buying (one word of advice: unless you're easy to please, don't blind buy!).

Just take your time and enjoy the journey because it's never-ending. I'm sure there are many members here that will offer you invaluable tips and advice, should you enquire.

Enjoy the ride!

I think it's very possible to get frags from the mail, but the problem is how can I get these samples?? And how much do they cost? Since they are samples they should go for free... What do you think?

Samples cost money to produce, so they are not always free. But the following link features tons of information to start you off:

Yes technically samples should be free but when the custodian of the resource smells demand (pun intended), sticker prices soon enough ensue.
