Sometimes Cheaper Is Better!

post #1 of 36
Thread Starter
I've been doing some comparisons and found some cheaper frags are better than the more expensive ones.

Here's a few examples....

JPG Le Male v CK One Shock - Very similar but at half the price, Shock has much better Silage, Projection and lasts a lot longer.

Pure Havane v Quorum - Although I love PH, I find that Quorum is equal to PH when it comes to the Tobacco note. Lot cheaper too!

Although not as cheap as Quorum I think 1 Million is very similar to PH.

CK Euphoria (Reg & Intense) v DSquared2 Silver Wind Wood - Although similar in both price and scent, SWW blows both E & EI away! E & EI give me about a half an hour of a weak woody scent, SWW gives me almost a full days worth of Wood and Aqua.

Anyway there's my rant for today. Any opinions or add ons to the list?

Versace l'Homme - not necessarily cheaper than a specific scent along the similar lines, but so rich, mature, luxurious and powerhouse, it's so niche-like, one might hardly suspect it's still available at discount (- er) prices

Michael Kors for men could easily be mistaken to be a much more expencive luxurious fragrance.

Not even remotely similar...

Le Male and CK One Shock do have a mint and vanilla note but that is the only similarity. Not to mention that Shock doesn't get vanilla-y until the drydown, whereas Le Male is vanilla all the way. As for projection, silage, and longevity, Le Male bests CK One Shock by a lot. Le Male lasts a really long time and has borderline ungentlemanly projection. I once walked into a men's restroom at Chili's and was the only one in there. It smelled distinctively of Le Male so whoever was in there before me left quite a scent trail. Shock does have good longevity though and it also has a nice tobacco note. It's my SOTD and it's quite nice, but Le Male is the stronger longer lasting cologne.

Pure Havane and Quorum??? Seriously? Pure Havane has a sweet honey, cherry, and hint of tobacco note. Quorum smells like a damp, dark forest. They smell nothing alike. Bogart Pour Homme smells very much like Pure Havane so that's one you can add to the list. Quorum is more along the lines of Polo or Drakkar Noir.

As for cheapies that smell like more expensive colognes:

Cuba Gold: Le Male
Perry Ellis 360 White: Le Male
Perry Ellis 360 Red: Acqua Di Gio
Perry Ellis 360 Black: Rochas Man
Cuba Orange: Dunhill Desire
Abercrombie Fierce: Platinum Egoiste
Cool Water- Green Irish Tweed
Aspen- Green Irish Tweed and Cool Water
Joop! Homme- Original Santal
Paco Robanne XS- Creed Himalaya
Unbelievable, I mean Unforgivable- Millesime Imperial
Love & Luck- Millesime Imperial (similar but not the same)
Al Rehab Silver- Silver Mountain Water
Rive Gauche- Ruehl No 925 signature, even though RG came out first, Ruehl is more expensive and hard to find
Set Sail St. Barts- Virgin Island Water
Z-14- Italian Cypress
Lots of Designer Imposters colognes/body sprays that smell like: Acqua Di gio, Fierce, Eternity, Code, etc...

If it smells good, like it. Price doesn't matter.

Thanks for the comprehensive list. But these two are not correct. Rather it is a case of the more expensive scents trying to smell like the cheaper ones, since the cheaper ones came out much earlier.

I agree with you though, Le Male and CKShock I didn't think had all that much in common other than being orientals.
Cheers,
Renato

I know that Joop! and XS came out before Original Santal and Himalaya

Halston I-12 smells a lot like Mugler Cologne to me, and $10 instead of $45.

Just a note: Z-14 old formulation only. New doesn't come close

Another good cheap alternative to Le Male is wearing nothing at all. I can guarantee this smells better as well.

1 Million- Golden Secret; Black Soul;
D&G Light Blue for women- Moschino I Love Love;
Jeux de Peau- Kenzo Jungle PH;
Eau du Soir- Aromatics Elixir;
Black XS- Azzaro Twin (both male);

This is the worst "similar" thread I've seen yet.

Quorum and Pure Havane are almost antithetical. If someone likes one, chances are high they will dislike the other.
If their sniffer is not broken that is.

Could you make it better, please?

Prada Amber Pour Homme and Eau De Lacoste L.12.12 Pure White

could be the Mandarin, orange blossom that Prada has or the grapefruit that Lacoste has.

Not to mention both have cardamom, and suede.

The opening of both are very very similar...the dry down is totally different. Prada lasts all day, Lacoste fades within an hour.
