Birthday Gift for a Father

My father's birthday is coming up and I intend to get him a cologne since up until now, he has always just been a deodorant and aftershave kind of guy. My collection is small and limited to my age group so my knowledge of other colognes is minimal. What would you recommend for a man who is in his early 50's. Ideally, a casual/work cologne would be perfect, and hopefully, we can keep this to $40 or less for a 1oz bottle by fragrancenet.com standards.

BTW, don't worry, I'll smell them at a local store before buying online just to make sure they aren't horrid. I won't be blind buying.

Dior Fahrenheit
YSL Rive Gauche(tin can)
Terre D'Hermes

I don't really know if they will be too costly though. Rive Gauche is definitely cheap however

I can definitely afford YSL Rive Gauche, and I think I could justify fahrenheit to myself since it is equal to about $30 and ounce. Terre is a bit out of my price range but thank you for the other two. I will definitely check them out.

Posting so I can also cast my vote for YSL Rive Gauche.

Another inexpensive YSL classic that fits your criteria is YSL Jazz -- woody and leathery base with excellent longevity and sillage, just $31+ on Amazon.com.

For nostalgia, I'll also suggest Quorum -- tobacco and leather, strong cologne for a gentleman, and very affordable (less than $20).

Good luck, and Happy Birthday to your father!

I'm a couple years older than Edgar's father and I wouldn't wear any on this list. Yuck!

Habit Rouge would be appropiate.
