Cliche Prom Question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just had a question about making a decision for a prom night fragrance. I am looking to buy a new cologne and I want to spend ~$80-$100. I am considering JPG Le Male, Chanel Allure Sport, and Hanae Mori. What would you say about these, or do you have any better suggestions? At my school, guys will only wear Adidas/Nautica and other aquatics, so I'm fine with buying an overused fragrance in this price range (except ADG and 1 million). I would prefer the suggestions be available at Macy's or Perfumania.

From your options, I'd suggest Hanae Mori.

The EDP is better than the EDT in my opinion, and regardless, they can both be found much cheaper online if that is an option.

Welcome!
I'd go with Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin or 212 Sexy Men.

Hanae Mori should work out for you.

Welcome! As others were implying, Allure sport seems too sharp and clean for the occasion. Either of the other two seems fine. I was going to add Chanel Egoiste (the regular Egoiste, not the platinum egoiste), a warm sandalwood, but regrettably, while it is in the price range, it is not sold at Macy's or Perfumania.

Hi Leipzig! If you are considering Le Male, I would suggest only a couple sprays max. I like it, but it can be extremely overpowering!

La Nuit de L'homme! It'll be very unique compared to the aquatics. It evokes sexy, masculine, suave, mature, perfect for prom.

Le Male and Hanae Mori HM are good choices. La Nuit De L'Homme is a nice one for that sort of occasion as well.
Your 3 choices are all good fragrances but let me play devil's advocate and suggest what might be wrong with each one as a prom scent:

Hanae Mori- too feminine- you want something with some sweetness but is definitely masculine

Le Male- an excellent scent despite what the haters say but is just way too common-you should try to stand out a bit

Allure Homme sport- too much of a fresh and daytime sporty type scent for a formal evening event

Here are my suggestions for ones to try all of which I believe are available at Macy's or Perfumania:

Black XS
Pi
Polo Black
The Dreamer
Individuel (Mont Blanc)
Boss No. 6
Armani code

I'm just astonished that an 18 year-old has $100 to spend on perfume!

That said, I'd support Cacio's suggestion of the original Egoiste.
Whatever you choose just make sure you don't apply too much. You want to draw people close not repel them from 20 paces.
How old are you??? This will better help with more suggestions....some fragrances would just be a little too mature.

Based on prom I would say between 16-18...of the choices you gave I would say Hanae Mori...sweet, subtle, and not cloying.

I would also suggest La Nuit One of my favourite clubbing scent though. Cheap and good!

You kidding? Usually by 18 you have a job but you still live at home so your bills are minimal. That's the perfect time to buy $100 worth of cologne

True. I guess not all of them want to spend it on beer, cigarettes, and midnight snacks in diners! Where were my priorities?!

Thanks for the responses! Hanae Mori looks good to me. So now I guess I'm torn between the EDP and EDT. Any thoughts?
Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread but I'm in the same situation so I thought it would be better to just post in a similar thread than to go and make a new one. Should I go out and buy something else or should I choose from what I already have? Currently I have: Rochas Man(my daily frag), Le Male, One Million(I'm the only one at school with this), and The Dreamer(longevity seems to suck on me?). What do you guys think? Should I get HM as well?

Test Hanae Mori first. I liked the top-notes but detested the dry-down. To me the dry-down is very floral and powdery so I have to agree with SmelltheGlove in his assessment above that HM is feminine. Nothing wrong with that if it is what you like, just test it before you buy.

The EDP is better IMO, but beware... it is a projection bomb.

To save a few bucks, however, the EDT does exactly the same job.

Hi, I'm new here, but I have the same question too, having prom coming in a couple weeks. The temps will likely be in the lower 80s, if that will be a factor. I am 18 years old and use YSL l'homme as my everyday frag, so I will consider using that for prom too, just because I am so in love with it. I noticed the projection isn't great, but maybe that will change once it warms up. I would like to have a new fragrance, though, just to switch things up.

So my question is what should I get? I am considering Gucci Pour Homme II, Burberry Touch, Chanel Allure Homme, and maybe even D&G the One. I absolutely despise the scents of Hanae Mori and L'eau D'issey, but I am willing to consider any other suggestions...no limit to the price, but preferably between $60-$90. I would like it to be a step up (in quality and perfection) from YSL l'homme...if that's possible.

Or maybe you think I should just go with l'homme. whatever the case, I would appreciate your opinions/suggestions.

Thanks

@ Clone ... I would try :

Play Intense by Givenchy - Upon application, one is pleasantly treated to a refreshing duet of nectarous, mandarin tangerine and somewhat tart bergamot. Tumbling to the waiting middle, the citrus mixes with the slightly spicy and fruity pink pepper and coffee tree wood to brew a sweet, cocoa concoction, and flows to the wondrous base. Transitioning, multifaceted labdanum kidnaps the cocoa mixture and morphs the cocoa into a not unpleasant, tar-like, burnt coffee. The syrupy coffee joins with the woody vetiver, the sweet patchouli, the spicy vanilla of the tonka beans, and the soft, balsamic amyris wood to exude an awesome, mocha drydown. A delectable treat, this radiant composition has excellent longevity and very good projection.

Welcome Clone and congrats for the prom.
La Nuit and Touch would be nice options since they're not overly invasive.
If you want more strong perfumes (as it's not a job interview):
L'Instant;
212 Men;
Roadster.

So your buying a new fragrance specifically for prom? I would just head over to Neiman Marcus or a store as such and ask an SA for a sample of Musc Ravageur or Aventus, I'm sure if you tell them your circumstances that they will hook you up.

Hmm if they are willing to do that then I think that's what I'm just gonna do instead. Would musc ravageur be fitting for prom though lol? I mean...I am only 16 so I was thinking something like new Haarlem would be good but hey if that works then

Go to your local Nordstrom's at Green Hills. Creed and Bond counters are upstairs. They also have several Creeds downstairs and many other frags so go down there as well. All of the SA's that I have talked with there are very helpful. Good luck!

Thanks! I guess ill be hitting Nordstrom's up right after I pick up my tux. Its nice to see someone who lives around here, thats kinda cool! So what creed/bond/whatever frag would you recommend for prom? Right now i'm thinking of wearing new haarlem or aventus but any other recommendations would be nice too.
I'm not very familiar with the Bond's but I know they make some highly regarded fragrances. If I were 16 and going to prom I would seriously consider Aventus, Green Irish Tweed and maybe Millisime Imperial. The Creed specialist at your Nordstrom is Byron. He is very helpful and should hook you up with a few samples (including Bond No. 9). That way you can test them beforehand and make the final call. Be sure to test them on skin and not just paper and trust your nose to lead you in the right direction (or if you're taking a date, include their opinion as well).

Lol Kagey. Some save for a first car or apartment.
