Bright Crystal May You Die and Burn in You Know Where.

So...I blind bought le bouquet absolu by Givenchy, whilst rolling my eyes at the "limited edition" on the box. It was a situation where I thought...eh, good price, throw it in there. Turned out to be a lovely surprise. But...it emboldened me.

Bright Crystal by Versace had been flinging ads at me for the past week. I read a few non-descript "my boyfriend loves this on me" reviews and decided to let the marketing do its work. I found a great price and I snagged it.

I do not know the correct perfumista vernacular to express how pathetically bad I find this scent. I keep sniffing it trying to find the words to describe...it's generic and flowery in the bad way. Le bouquet absolu is fragrant and beautiful. Bright Crystal is...well, it smells like synthetic flowers. I'm so upset about the huge waste. I don't think I can even wear it another day or two to make certain I absolutely hate it. I guess lessons like this have to be learned. Has anyone else tried this scent?

These are some strong words in the header, but I realize everybody is entitled to an opinion. Mine is that I gave up on Versace altogether after the two note-worthy older scents.

And then again, I do not like most of what I am sniffing in general, especially hot just-released fragrances: the ratio of sniffed scents to bought bottles is about 200:1. I guess, BN converted me from a perfume lover to a perfume hater. LOL

I don't like Bright Crystal either but like Twolf, there are very few fragrances out of all the ones I test (which is many more than I can even keep track of in my wardrobe list) that I would wear.

And even fewer that I like enough to buy.
That's why I almost never buy blindly)))

Blind buys are sometimes irresistible. Yes we live and learn. I'm sorry you hate Bright Crystal (I don't know it, but the first Versace Crystal was so not to my taste that I never became curious enough to go out of my way to try another). Maybe you could swap it for something else you know you like. Or gift it to somebody. Or hang onto it and - you never know - you might decide you like it after all. My preferences have changed so many times I can't keep count.

Blind buys, oh dangerous ground. Now I have been very lucky with mine.

But

I read every review I can find good and bad
Study the notes
Reviews stating My Boyfriend loves this, cuts no mustard with me. He is not the one wearing it for a start.
I am only interested in the person who wears it and what they think.

I don't like Bright Crystal either . I dislike the over the top cap even more. The cap / stopper is very disproportionate IMHO.

RiveGauche
...I know your header title was pretty strong stuff but it made me laugh . ( How often have I had this same sentence running in my head when I dislike a fragrance - for example Fierce by Abercrombie which the malls are fumigated with ,it seems ! *LOL* )

I actually thought about the gifting it bit (obviously to someone I don't have to be around) but...I wasn't sure about the etiquette. How do you give someone a perfume that no longer has the plastic on the outside of the box?

Who doesn't like a free gift of perfume? Just don't give it for their birthday or any other occasion when you would normally buy something new.

You can say something like, "This perfume doesn't work for me-- would you like it?" and let them sniff and decide. Then they won't feel like they have to accept if they don't like it either, or that your feelings would be hurt.

Well, I did like BC at first but on second sniff...well, kinda smelled like hairspray? Same with a few other light scents like BC. I couldn't think of a better way to say it unfortunately but ya, hairspray came to mind. I actually like the bottle. I'd be willing to sniff it again though just to make sure. If I found it for cheap I would still buy it though lol.

Oh and as far as giving as a gift..you can put it in a sheer gift bag, just a thought. Who wouldn't take it? I'd take it.

It has still lasted on my skin through the night. The only thing I can say is it is less offensive than when I put it on?

So here is the plan of action.

I'm going to get squeaky clean and try to suffer through one more day of Bright Crystal. Only then will I make a final judgment. I've heard of scents growing on people. It happens. Right?

Wow, RiveGauche! Strong words. Bright Crystal is a nice floral scent for some people. Fragrance is so much a matter of taste. Blind buys can be disappointing. Happily, my blind buy disappointments are very few.

The re-gifting of a fragrance is an act of love and generosity, IMO. I agree.

Simply say, "This does not suit me but perhaps you will enjoy it." I have done this with fragrance, clothing, books, etc. Just a few weeks back, I gave away a shirt (mail ordered) to a childhood pal who is a bit smaller than me. That's what friends are for.

Keep in mind whoever you give it to might wear it around you for years to come!

Oooh yes, this is a thought !

On the bright side, at least you made the producers of Blind Crystal happy by giving them your money!

Haha. You think I haven't thought of this? I have a bottle of Obsession sitting in a bottom drawer somewhere that I haven't even given to the maid for that very reason. On the other hand, I've given her minis of Bulgari that I won't wear but don't utterly despise.

This time the scent lasted MUCH shorter than it did the first day. Not exactly sure why as my regimen was the same.

Also, the thing actually DID start to grow on me. Ok, we're not BFFs or anything but it actually started to sort of seduce my nose...but it was definitely one exotic note in it that was doing the pulling. I'm not even sure what that is as I'm still quite clueless about notes.

That said, I don't see myself wearing a perfume that takes that long to grow on someone. I'm not trying to walk around stinking up the planet and explaining to others "oh, if you stick around long enough...my scent will grow on you". No no.

LOL- "not BFFs" but not "damned to You Know Where" in one day. Just goes to show how entertaining blind buys can be
post #20 of 35
I have always wondered about the claim SO MANY reviewers make... that their "boyfriends love" their perfume of choice.

I wonder, are their boyfriends really commenting on their perfume choices, specifically, that often? And if so, then why do so many of these perfume-savvy boyfriends converge on these remarkably banal mass market scents?
Or are they indirectly insinuating -- and I am actually clueless, so I apologize if this is some unwritten code -- they are having sex with their boyfriends while wearing the fragrance in question. They are letting 'us' in on one of their secret weapons. Like, "My boyfriend LOVES this on me. wink wink." Wait, but I see that review pretty often, too.

I am just confused.

Anyway, I really don't like Bright Crystal, and I haven't loved a Versace scent since. Well since Green Jeans. But I don't hate Dark Crystal. And I am ambivalent toward Versace Pour Homme, which my son loves.

Tee hee.

And Hillaire...you've given me things to consider that I haven't even thought about. Oh...and how different is the Noir Crystal from Bright Crystal? (I have the option of blind buying that as well for a fairly good bargain. eeeeek lol)

IMO, it's pretty inoffensive, as in, I'd be cool with my masseuse wearing it. But I wouldn't blind buy it, not personally.
Crystal Noir is very different from Bright Crystal, one might hate one and like the other.

Never blind buy anything with pink juice.

I have a bottle of Bright Crystal ready to be returned! I bought this and realized it smelled like a cheap body spray from the 80's!! So back to the store it goes...
Hi Gail, welcome to BN! Good luck with that return! Maybe exchange it for something lovely.

Wait...that's done? People can return perfumes? Interesting.

Gail...that yuzu note will sort of grow on you, fyi. It's very unique and strange. But I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for in a fragrance you're actually going to wear. good luck.
For what it's worth; Crystal Noir smells like root beer to me. And you can only return perfume in dept stores, not online.
Wow, lol, you know I can never see a fume growing on me so much that it would be something I love as opposed to despising it when first smelling or wearing it; I just pretty much know what I at least like (if not love) that often I can just blind buy based on the notes. That said, things can change from love to like or like to love and despite to tolerating it and so but not that much. I have also given up on Versace long ago, I just honestly find their fumes cheap smelling, acidic and non-descript, hair spray is a very good association.))

To my mind, V'E de Versace was the last good one from this house. Using my bottle slowly knowing that some dynasties never recover their glory.
My girlfriend wears this. Absolutely love it on her. Way better than her Chanels.
This scent also reminds me of Burberry Brit Sheer and Dior Addict 2..they just have that same thing going on. I would say they were all sisters or something...I try to try scents before I buy any. I was actually offered a pretty good deal on BC at the Dep. store..was wiling to give me this pretty generous free gift that included more BC..I declined..so, I guess, there ya go. Lol.

It's definitely got something. I don't condemn it to hell anymore. It's this yuzu...which is this odd grapefruit smell that I initially took for sour fruit hairspray. I think I might actually love this note if it were combined with other sweeter or softer things.

I'm actually somewhat amused by the journey I took with this one.
