Tuck the polo shirt in??

Hi.
I normally wear Ralph Lauren polo shirts on my casual days and I tuck them into my jeans. I just do not like a shirt hanging out and looking messy. My wife thinks I should not tuck them in. I like to wear nice shoes, with nice well cut jeans, a nice belt and my polo shirt tucked in.
Is this strange? I just turned 29 by the way if that is of any use. Do most people just let them hang out? I am a software developer and a very organized person with my profession.

Depends on the design of the polo and the rest of the clothes you are wearing. If you've got particularly neat and traditional style then I guess it makes sense to tuck in. If you're wearing a more modern cut polo then it could go either way and it does depend on what you're wearing with it. I prefer untucked myself but I always make sure the polo's look new, clean and fresh (must be ironed) so it doesn't look sloppy. Get polo's that fit you well too, they shouldn't be baggy or skin tight.
At the end of the day though why not make your wife happy and leave it out? They are usually designed to be worn untucked anyway.

No, do NOT tuck in unless you are playing golf at a really nice course or eating lunch at said golf course's restaurant. A polo shirt tucked in makes you look like you work at Best Buy or the Verizon store.

Of course, the shirt has to fit right. Make sure it's not too large. (James Bond always keeps his tshirts and polos untucked!)

there's nothing wrong with tucking a polo in. judging from how you describe your style it's best for you. does your wife think you look too neat and need to loosen up a little? if that's the case, there are better ways to do that.

if you're unsure, compare the silhouette. which one looks best? tucked or untucked.

this is a generalization but, tucked in is the classic way, loose is the modern adolescent way.

i'm not saying that un-tucked polo's can't look good, but in most cases it just looks sloppy and boring. what matters most, is the cut, the proportion. it should be never be too wide, not skinny either, not too long or too short. the fit must be very precise. in contrast what people commonly think, it should never be the standard option, it requires skill to pull it off. and even then it will never look better than the classic way, done right.

This man has the misfortune of not being ramrod slim like a Tom Ford model, but he looks well-groomed. Most of us don't look like models, but at least we can be well-dressed and dapper.

Great photos, gido! I belong to the "tucked in" camp.

By virtue of the back tails being longer than the front, the garment is meant to be worn tucked in. (This might be different with a polo with even hems, like a loose, casual tee or tropical guayabera.)

To have the long tails in back hanging over one's backside is a slovenly, unkemp look, capable only in being appropriate with college undergrads who don't know any better. The accessory to this look is a Dixie cup of cheap keg beer in one's hand.

I may solve my problem. Tuck the front in and leave the back out. Please both me and my wife all at once.

Some of my polo shirts I do not tuck in as they fit perfect length right with my jeans. These ones would be the Polo sport club shirts. They have the number on the back, white stripe across the front along with the polo club / country. Those are custom fit.
My standard polo sports shirts are just normal fit. I am pretty broad etc, so i fit them well, it is just the length that is a problem. I have to wear 2xl to fit me perfect but that comes at the expense of super long. I am 6ft 2.

I do love the classic way to wear them. Just wondered what the norm was with most folks here. I do agree that not tucked in can be rather slobby looking, depending on the fit.

I guess fashion decisions are really up to the individual, but there are still classic ways to do things that are ingrained in male clothing, such as a dimple in one's tie and the showing of some shirt cuff.

i suppose that in time, what is "fresh" and "revolutionary" will become commonplace. Such is the nature of fashion.

When men first started cutting their hair short after the French Directory, older men fumed, crying, "Why do young men wear their hair short like felons?! Why don't they wear it long and pulled back in a tail like a gentleman?!" (Men in prison then had their hair cut short for hygiene reasons and to reduce the catching of lice.)

High-waisted pants might make you look "old" by some opinions (women have "Mom jeans"), but--wow--they make your legs look long! A great fashion secret for shorter men and women, or people with short inseams.

Every modern polo shirt I have seen has square hems and is cut to a length meant to come just below the belt. I do not believe these shirts are intended to be tucked in, and personally I think if you are under 60 years old it looks odd. I mean, look at the pics gido posted. This is now 50+ years after those pics were taken, lol.

If your polos are too long, i.e. you have a short torso, a tailor can easily shorten your shirt so it comes just below the belt. If you are wearing jeans and the shirt comes below the front pockets, it is too long and this looks odd too.

So I would say NEVER, EVER tuck in a polo shirt. Button downs OTOH could go either way...

lol, I love the 2nd pic! Are those pants or knickers?

I like the link in Russel's post... I think Clint is showing his age, and the ultra-high rise pants that go near his armpits and tucked polo just make him look like he's about to check into a nursing home.

yes, in the early seventies, flared pants where all the rage. no flared pants? you boring old fart!
did they look better than straight, naturally tapered legs? of course not.
fashion moved on, flared pants became the laughing stock, and straight, naturally tapered legs continued to look good regardless.

I'm not a huge fan of polo shirts... this is the only one I own, but in black. This particular shirt would not look good tucked in IMO, so I think it also depends on the shirt.

It really depends on the situation.

Golf course, brunch, work place casual = always tuck.

Date night, hanging out with the guys = untuck.

Date night could really go either way, depending on the polo/outfit and rest of the situation. But it's rare that a properly sized polo, nice belt, chinos, and loafers/boat shoes will look anything but put together with a tuck and you can pull it off in all of those situations. Untucked isn't nearly as versatile.

Untucked shirts have been in fashion for at least ten years. Posting photos from the 1940s just proves how outdated the tuckers' opinions are. (And please, no comments about timeless fashion. That is an oxymoron.) So far, tucked has not come back in, for ANY type of shirt, whether T, polo, or dress. (Golf is renowned for its poor fashion sense so this does not apply to anything on the course.)

Polo shirts aren't particularly in fashion in any case, but if you want to rock the Mr. Conservative Weekend look I guess it works.

And yes, I'm a fashion professional so I do feel justified in my strong opinion.

Depends on the polo shirt and pants. I tuck if the shirt is plain (minimal to no design, just the small brand logo eg. Lacoste) and I'm wearing a pair of khaki pants. It's a nice, comfortable alternative to long sleeves and dress pants during the warm days of Spring.

I do not tuck when wearing jeans.

My polo has a long back and leaving it out looks stupid. I am 55 years old and have been lifting weights for 35 years and and physically fit. So tucking in would look better for my physique and reflect my mature age. However, I live in San Diego...and casual - even for business is still a pair of flip flops and shorts...it's hell getting old with a body of a 30 year old athlete...and trying to dress your age while not looking it. So, if the length of the shirt supports untucked (square bottom not hanging below your your butt) - I will leave it untucked...if it's too long, looks like a dress or is a collared button dress shirt..tuck the bad boy in.

My .02

If jeans, no. Especially if it's a cotton polo. Those things suck, no offense if you like them.

Golf, tuck it in regardless of how nice the course is or isn't. Besides, you'll play better.

Work, tuck in...regardless of policy, so no jeans either if polo.

Form fitting polos look silly regardless of how cut you are. Make sure you don't look like you borrowed your little brothers shirt.

That all being said married man to married man, listen to your wife....90% of the time with style she is right.

Wear dress shirts and bust them sleeves up if you need to tuck.

That is how I usually wear mine unless they are shorter. Just pull the bottom cuff up into your belt and voila. My pants do go all the way to my shoes though... and I wouldn't be caught dead in those shoes lol. Usually Sperrys or Rainbows, I do have some darker colored LS polos I wear in the winter with boots on occasion though.

I know we're in the "style" forum, but the key words for me in maitiu's original post were "casual" and "wife".....no, not "casual wife," that's a different topic

Casual: My wife worked in retail for a few years, so in the beginning of our marriage, I was constantly asking for fashion advice. Finally, she said this: "Wear it the way you're comfortable. If you're comfortable, you'll LOOK comfortable. If you LOOK comfortable, you'll be in style." Her point: I'm the kind of guy who prefers loose(r) clothing. So when I have everything sharp and straight and tucked in, I look like a stiff, and I don't look good. I think formal settings or work settings are one thing. If it's a casual look, wear it in whatever way YOU are comfortable.

Wife: You have a wife. Meaning, you're not trying to impress the ladies. The way I see it is this: If your wife likes a certain look, THAT'S the correct way to wear it She's really the only "outside" opinion that matters.

I enjoy wearing polo shirts a lot. I often wear them tucked in because it looks a bit more dressy. Tucked out looks to sporty for me. But it that is the look you're after, then just let it all hang out.

its all about the occasion..... work settings tucked out of the office untucked.... personally i love having them untucked im in good shape an wear mediums to small i enjoy it just cuz if i lift my shoulders you will see my belts( i believe a belt says alot about your style) also at bars i can show off my abs.... another thing if a women says what she likes shes usually right they have better fashion sense

Nothing strange about that. I tuck in my RL and other polo shirts. I think it leads to a cleaner, neater appearance. Just my opinion.
