The last time I was in India I picked up some of the more oil / attar based styled scents but that was a while ago and Mysore Sandalwood was much easier to come by. If you are feeling adventurous I believe there are areas where you could explore more traditional stuff - hopefully some Bombay based members will offer thoughts.
If I were heading that way again I would be poking around for vintage - I understand there may still be some to find, but again, best to travel with someone local who knows where to look. Part of the fun of being abroad is checking out what's the best local offering that you will never find at home and having something unique as a souvenir of the experience. Based on my own experiences in this part of the world I don't agree with the above three posters at all, frankly - travel with an open mind.
