Dior Homme smells like make up??

Hi guys,

Today I got my sample of Dior Homme.
The scent is unlike any other scent I'v smelled before!
A real nice soft bit sweet and powdery fragrance.
But thinking of what it reminds me of...
My sister's make up smells just like this?!
What do you guys think about Dior Homme?

I think girls should really dig this on you haha
post #2 of 46
A little bit, yeah. But it's not off-putting, IMO
post #3 of 46
Of course it does, Iris has been traditionally the most common smell of cosmetics, and guess what?, Iris is the main note of Dior Homme.
No surprise then.

aha thanks for your insight
Not to me, but I am not used to smell make up bags. To me iris smells rather like carrot.
I can see this, but I however don't make the connection.
It is certainly very powdery and I am not a fan. I have smelled a lot worse though.
Lol, yes, the general consensus is that it initially has a makeup vibe, from the iris. But it grows on you, and the more you wear it (at least for me) the less it smells like makeup and the more you come to appreciate it.

Interesting. I wondered what the similar note was that made me think of make-up.

Iris is not alone what makes this god awful frag smell of sickly lipstick and makeup. Prada Infusion D'Homme has iris and it does not smell like makeup at all. Just a clean soapy note.

Dior Homme has the coco in combination with iris and a couple of other notes, which combined make this frag smell sickly & nauseating of makeup and lipstick.

The perfect frag for the male makeup artist
post #11 of 46
Although it does to many, makeup doesn't come to my mind when I smell this. I find it just very sweet.
Perhaps I should start another thread to discuss this new Dior Homme scent. Makeup, you say?

(End snarkiness).

The old DH had way more Iris, and if you think the new one smells like makeup just wait till you catch a whiff of the old. Frankly, I liked the more Iris version, but the new one is a winner, too.

Stop the press. Didn't notice this myself but then I don't use make up in the usual sense, just motor oil and French mustard.
Stay away from your sisters makeup its unhealthy.lol

Some of us without sisters still live with GF's, who bring their Louis Vuitton makeup bags everywhere - it seems

I like makeup on women, but don't like the smell of it on myself

Actually i think Dior nailed it in the campaign when they casted Jude Law, who I always thought to be the typical quirky, vain, pretentious, ex-jock that likes to wear pink polos with popped collars!
I mean, there's something really pink polo with popped collar about this fragrance, IMO

I've only seen one movie with Law, Sherlock H, so didn't know he was an ex-jock (come to think about it, don't even know what an ex-jock is tbh)

But if it means a former makeup artist he fits the bill perfectly IMHO

This exactly. Given a chance (and several wearings) in my experience the makeup connotation fades and that same iris note stands out as round, fruity, invigorating, and wonderfully distinct. Not only did I do a healthy 180 on Dior Homme, it's now arguably my favorite fragrance. Worth the time and effort, in my opinion.

Of course Dior Homme smells like makeup/lipstick/old lady's handbag, etc...Best worn with guy-liner and tight jeans while sipping chai latte's at the most expensive coffee shop in town browsing Basenotes on your laptop.
lol this thread is awesome, I do get a lipstick smell from DH and DHI.
Yes , it does smell a lot like make-up/traditional red lipstick. But I think the ladies will quite enjoy it, that followed up by the gorgeous chocolate, leather notes is sure to make them ecstatic.
Never understood the fascination. Smells like make-up to me as well
post #24 of 46
Makes me think of red lipstick. Roommate says it smells like the whole cosmetics section of a department store. I like it a lot.
I have a makeup bag full of old makeup that I really need to throw away. I don't wear much of it anymore at all, plus it's just...well...old! When I first smelled DH it reminded me of that makeup bag. I've only given it one wearing (it was for a SSD quite a long time ago) and as I recall the makeup vibe pretty much vanished in the drydown.
cookie dough flavored make up (DH) and chocolate flavored make up (DHI)
Definitely need to smell the new formulation and compare. I used to hate the iris but now I love it
post #28 of 46
New formulation DH is good stuff. Iris is gone in an hour or so when the cocoa comes to the party.
See this is how long I've been out of the fragrance game, I didn't know there WAS a new formulation! I might have to seek this out. I've been on a buying spree lately...why stop now?
It does a have a very powdery iris note, easy to associate with makeup smell

can you compare your new formulation of DH to your formulation of DHI? and which DHI do you have?
does have a lip[stick note
Love my old formulation of DH, total full bottle keeper.
Yes. It's absolutely vile.
such a manly scent indeed ...

It depends on the way you smell it. If you stick your nose where you sprayed it, you'll smell mostly its dominant note (iris). On the other hand, if you give it space from your nose and smell its sillage instead, you'll realize how beautiful the iris note smells like -- and blended with the cocoa note in Dior Homme / Dior Homme Intense makes it even better and makes it more masculine.

Only tried DHI: I first tried it on a tester strip, and I totally got a pronounced make up vibe, which really put me off & I decided I couldn't live with it.
One day I decided to test it on my skin and the make up vibe was almost non existent, which really suprised me, and it dried down to a gourmandy cookie dough smell. I'm beginning to warm to it now.

Welcome!
Yeah, altough I haven't tried the new formulation, the old one definetely smells like make-up.

I have the reformulated DHI. Reformulated Dior Homme smells brighter and more floral than the new DHI. New DHI is a bit darker and has the cocoa drydown sooner. The cocoa in DHI is nicer than DH too.

Apparently, it can smell like "makeup" to those who cannot distinguish among the notes. It takes time and a bit of effort to do this, and some people don't want to put in the effort. Perhaps they have a lot of other things to do, so I'm certainly not saying this as a criticism.
Yeah I definitely got the makeup connection. Not makeup in general, but lipstick. The more I tried it, I got less and less of a lipstick impression. Now I don't get that at all and love it.

My experience exactly.
