Steam clean, white and dressy

Thread Starter
A fragrance I've always imagined and dreamed of finding would be something that smells very white, steam clean (metallic is ok, just not thin and sharp like say, chrome), laundry-esque but better. Purity. But, I want it to be masculine.

The closest scent to what I'm imagining is Narciso Rodriguez's Essence - it has it all, the steam clean aldehydes, the white feel thanks to iris and a kind of white rose note. Some sharp lemon, cashmeran and laundry esque notes without smelling too cheap. White musk but well blended. But.. it comes across as too feminine on my skin. The rose/iris/benzoin gets an almost sultry edge to its clean cut character.

The next closest scent I've found is Sartorial. I'd tell you where it doesn't meet the mark exactly, except I have not been able to revisit it since wearing it last over a year ago, because I wore it the night I found out my mom was admitted to the hospital, and the associations there are strong and painful. I do remember though it wasn't quite what I had in mind. It was perhaps too traditionally fougere like. I know, it's very modern as far as fougeres come, but it still doesn't have the same level of modernity as Essence - with its relatively weightless sheen.

Mugler Cologne has the steam clean feel but does not strike my nose as being 'white' in any way. Outrageous! by FM also has the steam clean feel but has too much color and is too playful. The scent I dream of will be more clean/fresh/elegant. Bvlgari Man comes close, but it is too.. I don't know. Not elegant enough, perhaps? I think if Bvlgari Man was a bit less woody/starchy and had a sheer rose note (ala Essence or the rose in Xerjoff's Uden) it would be perfect.

I'm imagining the scent I dream of will probably feature iris, and quite possibly rose. Tonka, light cedars or sandalwoods, etc.

So, does this scent exist?

Only marginally, Metal Jeans by Versace - however, with a huge maybe

Another possibility, in my opinion, closer to the concept: Acca Kappa Muschio Bianco
post #3 of 59
I can only think of Himalaya for its icy fresh soapy white musky cleanest though no steam here. I can see Sartorial with the steam as it does have that iron going over a shirt accord in the opening and its dressy though I do not get the white clean feeling with it. Happy hunting.
When I read the thread title I thought Prada Infusion d'Homme. But that may prove too dry and starchy. What about Kenzo Signature? A semi-sweet woody musk with a laundry flavour.
Only scents that remind me of Laundry: Versace Dreamer smells like Downy fabric softener dryer sheets, kinda mysterious

Chanel Platinum Egoiste has a fresh out of the laundry smell to it also

Infusion d'Homme is indeed close but not quite right. I wish I could pinpoint exactly why but I'm not sure. A bit too starchy perhaps. It's been a long time since I've tried it though so I will definitely revisit, as it is at least very close to what I'm imagining! Thanks for the recommendations so far guys

Two obvious suggestions would be both SKAI and Dry Clean by Comme Des Garcons but, as usual with these type of fragrances, you have to be fine with the fact that "clean" means "brand new" in the CDG's vocabulary.

Dry Clean lists rose, aldehydes, guaiac wood, indian bay and, obviously, incense. SKAI includes (according to fragrantica) Sandalwood, Labdanum, Suede and Grapefruit.

Much harder to find but worth checking out are the two latest deliveries by Sissel Tolaas, Hsideews and Made in Norway. The former shares some similarities with SKAI. It's the smell of clean (indistrual) open spaces, an airy vibe... MiN is more of an aquatic with some florals and a remarkable futuristic twist...

What about Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis?
Balafre and Sartorial are the first to come to mind, followed by . . . . believe it or not - BlkDnm but that's more white linen.
L'Eau de Serge Lutens? Although that one's more unisex.
Lalique White is nice, but perhaps too casual.

MDCI Invasion Barbare.

Dry clean sounds awesome. I love bay and guiacwood, and they both meld so well w/ rose. I'll definitely be checking that out. Heck, they all sound good although i'm not sure i'll be able to find the Sissel Tolaas's.

And Aqua Universalis? Well, there are reasons that it doesn't fit the bill here, but I'm not sure I'm er, qualified to mention them.

EVIL!

I forgot to add, Helmut Lang (both EDC and EDP)

Alright, I'm gone for the weekend now (yup, still no internet on the weekends. Argh!)

All of these suggestions have been VERY good so far. I've tried most of them (those I mentioned earlier and also Invasion Barbare, Helmut Lang edc) and I can totally see why people recommended them but it's still not quite right.

The key element is that the scent smell very white or perhaps silvery, but without smelling too thin/sharp. Romance Silver, for instance is kind of a nice metallic silver, but it's a bit thin and too greyish. Honestly, I wish I could just up the woods and tone down the rose and sweet musks in Narciso's Essence. It would be perfect!

Has anyone tried the other Essences? The musk version, iridescent version, etc? How do they compare to the original?

Oh, another scent that comes close is Omnia Crystalline, just for reference.
I think Puro Lino might fill the bill. Freshly washed white cotton sheets billowing gently on a clothesline, bathed in warm summer morning sunshine.
Balafre would definitely fit the bill.
What about Gendarme? Also, you might try Clean Fresh Laundry and Clean Warm Cotton. Although marketed to women, they just smell...well...CLEAN to me!
L'Anonyme by A Lab on Fire
Have you tried Chanel No. 19 EDT? It's a possibility maybe.
Try Lacoste L12.12 Blanc...

So, does this scent exist?

Easy: Vetiver Hombre by Adolfo Dominguez. Don't know if both live under the common roof of Puig. VH is manly, so timid that it is: manly. The thin clean smokey vetiver saves the smooth aldehydes from being too speechless. For me personally the perfect just-pulled-this-shirt-out-of-the-wardrobe-scent. Absolutely no complications, just intimate without any transpiration.
Luten's "L'Eau Froide" might fit the bill. I like it but the ginger-note is putting me off a bit, too shrill for me.
How about Richard James Savile Row?

This one tends to come up alot when clean, white, and dressy is mentioned

This is the one, but try and find some. I have a bottle and a half left.
Kurkdjian Pour Le Matin or Nasomatto White Musk? Might fit what you're looking for. Both are expensive- sample first!
I also find Kurkdjian's Aqua Universalis (and even better the AU Forte) to be clean but could be a little too flowery for some.

Lanvin L'Homme is my choice for a clean white dress shirt scent. It's my go-to workplace fragrance for understated professionalism.

Datura Noir;
Voyage D'Hermès.
Kouros Cologne Sport
Have you tried Jean Luc Amsler Prive? It's an understated white linen kind of fragrance that will not offend anyone and give a crisp shirt feel.
Try the feminine that Donna Karan did, the one in the tall, skyscraper-esque bottle, DKNY Woman...it IMO conjures up that 'steam clean white and dressy' feeling you're describing. Easy to find too...I smelled it at Perfumania last time I was there. Turin gave it 4 stars.

Lalique white is my vote, hands down.

I am looking to cut back on my dry cleaning bill too
post #38 of 59
Give these ones a try:

Le Labo Gaiac 10
Creed Original Cologne (or its new name, Pure White Cologne)
Prada Infusion d'Homme
I have been looking for this same kind of thing too. Let me know when you find anything better than this:

Guerlain Cologne du Parfumeur
Molecule 01, or Escentric 01
Serge Lutens L' Eau Froide
Gendarme
Armani Mania
Andree Putman Parfumee

To some degree I get this from Invasion Barbare.

Thank you for all the suggestions. It was wonderful to come back to a thread filled with suggestions! Also, in the original post I forgot to emphasize one of the other most important qualities - it needs to be more than just clean and white and pure, but elegant, too! Rich, of sorts. Like laundry detergent or dryer sheets, maybe, but so much richer that people wouldn't mistake it for something you'd find at the local store.

More comments on the suggestions made that I've already tried:

Invasion barbare - great suggestion and great fragrance. This has the depth and elegance that I'm looking for, which all too many clean, white-shirt scents do not. Alas, there's a synthetic in the drydown that bothers me a bit, and the scent reads a bit too much like shaving cream to my nose. Granted, this would be the most expensive shaving cream that only a prince could afford, but shaving cream all the same.

Pour Le Matin - a great scent, just not elegant enough for what I am thinking. I want a more assertive floral element in the middle, and the lavender/iris here is wonderful but more comforting than elegant.

Nasomatto Silver musk - I've heard this is similar to Bvlgari PH, which I just retested over the weekend. Bvlgari PH gets close to what I'm looking for, actually, but there's a thick musk in it that I find very off putting and it becomes more and more prominent as it dries down.

Molecule 01 - too basic, although the idea is there. I'm not a fan of iso e when it is naked, though.

Gendarme, Puro Lino, etc - I've not tried these, but are they elegant at all? I actually did smell some variant of Gendarme long ago and I remember it being very clean and detergent-esque, but not particularly elegant. More casual and comforting.

L'Anonyme - sounds interesting - clean and pure but with a geranium note. Geranium is one of my favorite notes when well used.

Lalique White - this sounds really good. Curious if it's at all similar to Honour Man, since Honour Man is close to what I'm imagining but Honour becomes too dry/woody for me.

Cartier Eau de Cartier - somehow Cartier always slips under my radar. I hadn't even heard of this scent, but it sounds really quite good. I wasn't thinking violet originally, but I can see how that would work in this context.

ok... there are many other good suggestions but if I keep this up I'll be writing a small book.

Also, I should add that I think I may have found - and had, all along - the scent that I was dreaming of. What scent is that, you ask? Amouage's Silver Man. I don't know why I never really got into this scent with prior samplings. I first sampled it a few years ago and really liked it, but was more wowed with Reflection Man and ended up buying a bottle of that instead. Silver is far more refined and, I thought, less interesting than the rather bombastic Reflection. But now Reflection seems like it is trying too hard to impress, while Silver Man is still standing there, quietly, as trimmed and proper as ever.

I totally forgot I had a sample of it and managed to stumble across it while looking for some other samples. I had a sniff and had a bit of a eureka moment. Foetidus's review of this is spot on and it has a particularly choice quote:
"I have a difficult time describing it, except to say that it has a strong element of dryer sheet accord to it—granted, it is a profusely opulent dryer sheet with abundant depth and refinement."

I agree with that sentiment. An opulent dryer sheet indeed, amidst a wonderful frankincense note. What an unexpected juxtaposition - but how beautiful! The sharpness of the incense contrasts wonderfully with the smooth musk, slightly indolic flowers, and hints of powder. It manages to smell like dryer sheets, sort of, but never descends into the cheap/scratchy musks that are so prominent in so many of these scents (which is one thing that plagues NR's Essence, in the later dry down).

Still, this may be too opulent for regular wear - as I'm not the type that likes to dress up often - so I'll be checking out as many of the suggestions that I can reasonably get my hands on.

edit: just for reference, the notes of Silver are
Top notes: plum, bergamot, mandarin, orange blossom

Heart notes: jasmine, rose, orchid, ylang-ylang, heliotrope

Base notes: amber, musk, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, frankincense

I think it's the use of heliotrope here that is blowing my mind. It does make it smell somewhat like Boucheron by Jaipur, but Silver is a bit 'thinner', more modern and less stuffy.

Himalaya comes to mind, as does Aventus; I often wear this with a crisp white shirt. Others that may be suitable are Incasion Barbare (in the same vein as Sartorial but without the stale BO smell) and possibly Prada's Infusion d'Homme.

I'm going to have to revisit Himalaya - a great suggestion btw - as it definitely has some similarities to Silver although I recall Himalaya's dry down being a bit more masculine and peppery. Himalaya, like Silver, is a scent I never really gave proper attention to because it was perhaps too "well blended." I was always seeking the odd, the stuff that pushed the boundaries, and Himalaya and Silver didn't, although I do think Silver actually does raise the bar in its respective genre! Perhaps Himalaya does, too? I'll have to try it again and find out. I just hope there's some juice left in my sample - it's about 4 years old and they tend to evaporate.

I'll add my newbie's voice to Lanvin L'Homme. I wore it for a long time and was often told it smelled like freshness and clean linen together.

Maybe Bvlgari - Pour Homme or L'Artisan The Por un Ete? The latter is light but very fresh.

I'm not sure if this fits the bill here but I always put this on the "underrated" lists and have been wearing it again lately instead of my daily TdH. It has a clean, linear cedar smell on me that comes off as really professional....so maybe it does belong here

I know and love that "weightless sheen" you are referring to. Olivier Cresp seems to use it in his compositions. D&G Light Blue has that sheen. Roberto Cavalli Blue Man has that same sheen you might like. Maybe not as elegant as you might want though. Lacoste Style & Play also has shades of that sheen as well. Thanks Sculpure for the terminology. I have always been fascinated but unable to pin down a word phrase to describe it.

Another one to ponder, Carolina Hererra, the first one.

Wait - before You decide to dump 300$$ this way or the other consider to sample Jetset / S-Perfume. And Adolfo Dominguez - Vetiver Hombre. My reasoning is like that: if it is meant to be timid, all 'white' You will not like a big 'projection' either. If the fragrance complies there is no room for complications - they wouldn't reach above the threshold of perceptibility when You wear it anyway - not even for Yourself! All this twiddling circumstances, the pomp of 'high concept' artisan craftwork would be void. So, why bother with 'invisible' issues?
Maybe silver mountain water? It's the only one that comes to my mind but I haven't smelled it in recent times
post #57 of 59
Lalique White is definitley an excellent one, it's not at all dry imo, and fits the bill for "white". Also Bvlgari BLV and BVL Notte come off as white to me.
I would have to go with your first vote for Sartorial, which was inspired by the scenario you are describing: the cutting and sewing rooms of Norton and Sons, bespoke tailors since 1821.

A great suggestion. I love and hate this frag, but regardless if its a love or hate day, I am always intrigued by it. That milky-lactonic quality is very interesting, and the way the salty vetiver pokes through the clean vanilla and orange blossom is intriguing. Bittersweet. I'll have to wear this again - sometimes I think it captures all the parts I love of Reflection Man while dropping the parts I am ambivalent about. Other times F32 just seems a synthetic, but interesting, mess.

Does anyone wear this successfully in the summer heat? It seems like it would be too thick and milky for high heat. The times I've been most inspired to wear this scent is on cloudless and very sunny winter days.
