My name is Alityke and I

Have fallen in love with a flanker

Even worse it's a limited edition flanker of a scent I don't like! Guerlains Idylle Duet Rose Patchouli so it isn't even in my comfort zone but I had a spray as it was heavily discounted and couldn't get passed it. I had to have it! It's lush, warm, comforting yet fresh. Just scrummy going to have to eek it out though

Don't be to hard on yourself Alityke.....Its happened to all of us at one time or another.....And if it hasn't happened yet.....it will.....Gary

Oh, I would love to smell that! It sounds like something I would love, and then mourn that I could not get more of! Enjoy every drop.

Sweets - that's okay !
I love Hypnotic Poison and it's a flanker.
Plus I love Idylle EDT in particular . In fact I'm quite partial to Idylle in total !
It's the ' limited edition ' part that's somewhat
heartbreaking . In Mimi's Ideal World ...... there would be no limited editions , only limitless perfume we love .

There were 2 bottles I got the 35ml cos I'm a cheapskate and because I easily get bored, Now I'm seriously considering going back for the other 50ml bottle tomorrow. It's heavily discounted too it will work out at less than £1/ml. 9am will find me me sat outside the mall to flex my credit card. A slippery slippery slope

Hello Alityke...... You are among friends and fellow addicts here.

What I really want to know is why I'm always reading posts from Brits about discounted perfumes. What kind of stores are these??

Just department store counters. They have targets to meet and shelf space to clear. The Guerlain counter has so little space and storage they carry very few bottles of each scent.

Yesterday all fragrance and beauty over £40 had a fiver off, even if it was discounted, for Mothers Day. Online the often have 10% off on frags from mainstream houses, even new releases.

Going to pick up the larger bottle of Duet this morning

This. I love a limited edition too..and wondering, why? Why? Cause that means I will have to get back up bottles and such. And prices can go up on these limited ones...not cool!

Alityke, enjoy your flanker!.

Personally, I do not do Idylle on the grounds of too much musk, but your description of a flanker sounds all right, I would give it my best shot.

Enjoy your finds and thanks for telling us about them.

I've sold my soul to the flanker devil and purchased that last available bottle. The wonderful SA gave me a lovely goody bag with 30 samples and testers in it. Some fragrance some skincare which I'm delighted with. I was very cheeky and asked what would happen to the tester now all the stock had been sold. Sadly these testers have to be handed to security who log them prior to disposal. Interesting how many testers show up on the bay

Twolf I dislike Idylle too, I find it harsh and headachy. I would not usually have tried the tester for Duet for that reason, but seeing heavily discounted stock I tried it and the rest is history.

Flankers aren't necessarily bad things, at least not when you're talking about the fragrance itself - it's the confusing and uninspired marketing of flankers that we object to. I like plenty of flankers, some I like even better than the original, but the fact is flankers sometimes have nothing to do with the original creation ...outside of marketing (and others are almost copies of the original in a new bottle - that's where the real money is!) Companies simply don't want to spend extra money on r&d and everything involved with launching a new line when they already have a successful one in place. They can bang out a new fragrance and attach it to an established "brand" much faster ...and with fewer ramifications if it happens to fail. Limited Editions are no-brainers - enough people will love it and "need" it to give it a successful run, and the company behind it has invested almost nothing. And they've learned that it doesn't hurt them to dilute their own brand because we'll buy it if we like it, and the original maintains its dignity no matter what.

Flankers I love more than the original include Givenchy's Very Irrésistible L'Intense (trust me, I couldn't love it more if it had it's own original name and bottle rather than that ridiculous bi-lingual moniker...although I would be happier about recording it on the sotd thread, lol!) and Alien Sunessence Eau Legere (I think that's what they're calling it, it's the yellow one) which has a beautiful and bright lemony top that lends, imo, much needed sparkle and radiance to the original. Also Jessica Simpson's Fancy Nights is a beautiful fragrance, far more elegant and luxurious than the difficult-to-take-seriously original. And like MimiG I like the Poison flankers much better than the original - I especially like Midnight and Hypnotic.

Please don't buy into the anti-flanker snobbery, Alityke - you never know what your next fragrance love will be, and it shouldn't be denied due to lazy marketing.

Evangeline thank you. I'm not really a frag snob, let's face it I wear Marks and Spencers cheap dupe of Light Blue (double naffness?) and Zara's Coco Romance. I also like and wear JLo Glow and SJPs Lovely (more roses and patch) but I have been wary of flankers in the past where I've disliked the original. I've probably missed some beauties from the misconception that they bear some resemblance to the original.

Your use of Poison to illustrate the marketing sparked my interest, Dior seem to have now made a conscious decision to have a line of many of it's strong sellers. The Poisons, the J'Adores, the Miss Diors (a travesty). I noticed today Givenchy have even launched lipstick colours to match the Very Irrestistible line of fragrances. The palest colored one is rather good on a strawberry blonde

Great post, E.!

I have nothing to add to that! Just will gladly admit to liking/loving many flankers. Probably should be most ashamed of Coco Mademoiselle-but I'm not!
Hey, I like Coco M. too and would like a bottle sometime! Yup, I can agree with some of E.'s choices, I do like several flankers I guess! As long as ya like the scent, who really cares what others think? I don't! LOL.

Me as well. It makes me weak in the knees.

I still don't understand what a flanker is.
A flanker is another version of a main release that's usually been successful. Example: Jasmin Noir by Bvlgari, a flanker would be Mon Jasmin Noir. Another example..main release, Chance by Chanel..flankers are Chance Eau Tendre and Chance Eau Fraiche by Chanel. Main release Poison..flankers are Hypnotic Poison, Midnight Poison, Pure Poison. . It's like a "sequel" scent.

Here's a glossary that has the meanings of different terms and such:

Here's an example: YSL Paris has a number of flankers that were released in the spring; they all shared similarities with the original Paris:

2002: Paris Eau de Printemps
2003: Paris Premières Roses
2004: Paris Roses des Bois
2005: Paris Roses Enchantés
2006: Paris Roses des Vergers Springtime
2007: Paris Jardins Romantiques
2008: Paris Ponts des Amours

I think that was the last one, as Parisienne followed.

Thank you kalli and 30 roses :-)
I've wondered for awhile and thought it had to do with size - like a giant bottle.
I actually like the YSL Parisienne. Not a flower grenade of the YSL Paris, which I also enjoy.

I am shameless flanker-whore. Especially when it comes to Hermes. Simply pitiful...
Although I thought I disliked Idylle, when I smelled it in Paris last week, I realized that it is only the odd gold bottle that I dislike...the scent is a nice lily/muguet and is actually fine...I didn't buy it because it is available here.
