If you like just new released perfume - buy 2 bottles or more as backup

I came to this conclusion given the experience with my favorite scents.
I liked Fahrenheit - castrated.
Dior Homme and Dior Homme Intense - Simplified and Watered
Bel Ami Hermes - watered and lost it's soul
Gucci Envy - reformulated and discontinued
Gucci Nobile - reformulated and discontinued
And many many other lovely scents.

So, don't wait the day when your favorite fragrance will be listed on eBay as RARE for 350 usd ( for example Dior Homme Intense)...

Unfortunately one rarely never knows if or when a scent will be altered until it happens. In principle I get your drift.

I agreed with hednic, I normally don't backup unless I absolutaly love it. But even then, I've been getting rid of my backup for other fragrance. Theres to many out there to experience. So to me it doesn't make sense to backup anymore. If the scent gets discontinued, I enjoy what I have and move on to the next best thing.

Worrying about reformulations can get expensive if you are going to stock up on what you like. Then again I usually buy the biggest bottle available of whatever I love and at this rate of collecting will probably never finish what I have.

I kind of agree but I find it hard to get through the fragrances I already have without backups. The only one I've recently made a point of purchasing is MCM Twenty Four Evening and that's only because it's discontinued.

I just bought 4 x 125 ml of YSL Rive Gauche, because I was told it was being reformulated into something worse - but I already have frags enough for the next 15 years, so I will stop this madness.......

I guess you with 1200+ bottles in your collection shouldn't even consider buying backup bottles - even if you use a new frag 4 times a day and overspray with 8-10 sprays, your collection will last you 3 lifetimes.........

I agree - even though my collection still is at a modest level, I will stop buying backups, they will end up being 10 years old before I even start to use them - and then maybe will end up being worse than if I bought a new reformulated version of it

I also always buy the biggest bottle available - hence I have 25 # 200 ml bottles, 6-8 150 ml bottles of the more popular designer frags, 18-20 125/120 ml, and the rest are 100 ml/90 ml and 75 ml bottles and only 75 ml because I couldn't buy a size larger than that.

I do buy backups when I truly love something. I'm now used to the fact that my favourites are constantly being reformulated or discontinued, so when I find a version I love, I buy 2 backup bottles. This applies only to my top dozen frags, though. For the rest I have samples and decants.
I've never regretted getting backups, never wanted to sell or swap them. I have regretted not getting backups, as there's nothing worse than running out of a beloved frag, and then finding it's been discontinued. This happened to me with Caron's Rose (but I did persuade the boutique to rummage around in the back of the shop and they eventually came up with a small extrait. Sadly, no more exists). Also with Aromatics Elixir Velvet Philtre, which has gone forever. For some scents I even have three backups! OK, they might outlive me, but my daughters will have a great time going through my scent wardrobe if so!

I have backups of 15 fragrances that I love which are are discontinued, reformulated or limited edition.

Buying them did tie up money, but I can't say I'm sorry about getting them as they'll allow me to enjoy these wonderful perfumes for years to come! And having extra has allowed me to share samples of them with others without fretting about not having enough left for myself.

I've been doing this for the last five years. If I ever fall out of love with something, I can easily sell it.

No backups for me. With rotations from a modest wardrobe i have never finished a bottle of anything. And as you age your taste in food and fragrAnces evolve.
