Best Cocoa Drydown...

Hey guys, I am looking for your help yet again. I am currently looking for a fragrance that has strong projection and lasts a long time with a cocoa drydown. My nose is not nearly as experienced as many of you so I am asking for your input. I am really liking L'Instant De Guerlain Extreme but it doesn't project well on me and becomes a skin scent after about 2hrs. I also am really digging Dior Homme Intense but I am not a fan of the iris in the opening. Midnight in Paris seems interesting but to feminine for my liking.
What is your favorite fragrance with a cocoa drydown?
L'Instant de Guerlain is my current fave cocoa drydown and first one that came to my mind. I get really good lasting strength with it, skin and clothing.
Kokorico has a nice cocoa dry down IMO.
I haven't tried this one yet but a lot of people say Bond No 9 I Love New York for All has a great cocoa note.

Lutens Borneo is a patchouli with a strong chocolate note in the drydown.

My favorite though is perhaps Dune (for women, that is), with the unmistakably gritty Hershey chocolate drydown. However, it's floral too, and I don't think you are willing to go through the flowers first.

Sure, but it's far better on the EDP aka Eau Extreme

I have some fragrances that lean a little feminine; Sycomore, Tonka Imperiale, Spirituese Double Vanille to name a few but you are right I probably wouldnt make it through the florals.

I love the dry down of H.M. by Hanae Mori. Real nice combination of chocolate and vanilla, and it projects well as well as lasting forever.
L'Heure Defendue (Cartier Les Heures Collection) could be worth a shot.

Dark Cacao with Cashmeran + Patchouli.
Pure Havane has a drydown that is almost identical to the vintage Dior Homme Intense .

Wore it at home in the rain today. It's more mocha than cocoa . . . the coffee sets the tone more than chocolate ime.
I've found chocolate/cocoa to be a problematic note, unlike coffee. It often smells too literal (like a dessert) or it doesn't seem to be doing much. I didn't find Borneo 1834 to be compelling, perhaps due to its simplicity. I'd have to say Python (the women's version) is the best frag for me, in this case the note being dark chocolate. Though a chocolate note is not listed for Popy Moreni (1997), I get an impression of cocoa in the drydown, which is superb. The notes for that one are: "...ylang-ylang, bergamot, geranium, coffee, mimosa, coriander, orange blossom, heliotrope, brem, benzoin, patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, amber and vanilla" (from fragrantica.com).

I dont know how ppl get poor projection and longevity off L'instant Extreme. It lasts forever on me and latches onto my clothes through airborne transmission. When I wear it in the winter the scent will get caught on my jacket and stays for days.

Yeah, I was just about to mention that. ILNY4 All smells like Coco Puffs cereal with milk. If someone really likes a cocoa note in a fragrance, they should definitely try that frag.

Dior Homme to me, the original, intense is more vanilla
post #18 of 57
Dior Homme Intense, Pure Havane, and I love Ny for all..
Dior Homme Intense and Givenchy Play Intense comes to mind.
The top spot is, in my opinion, shared on almost equal terms, in no particular order and with similar performances, by: Rochas Man, Dior Homme Intense and Penhaligons Endymion
post #21 of 57
I'm not a big fan of the note but maybe Mat Chocolat by Masaki Matsushima could fit your bill.
For sure this is Guerlain L'Instant Pour Homme Extreme.
Try Aomassai and Musc Maori, both from Perfumerie Generale or Chocolate Greedy by Montale.

+2 for Kokorico. Dry, herbal drydown. An underrated perfume, I think

Play Intense by Givenchy - Upon application, one is pleasantly treated to a refreshing duet of nectarous, mandarin tangerine and somewhat tart bergamot. Tumbling to the waiting middle, the citrus mixes with the slightly spicy and fruity pink pepper and coffee tree wood to brew a sweet, cocoa concoction, and flows to the wondrous base. Transitioning, multifaceted labdanum kidnaps the cocoa mixture and morphs the cocoa into a not unpleasant, tar-like, burnt coffee. The syrupy coffee joins with the woody vetiver, the sweet patchouli, the spicy vanilla of the tonka beans, and the soft, balsamic amyris wood to exude an awesome, mocha drydown. A delectable treat, this radiant composition has excellent longevity and very good projection.

&

Coromandel by Chanel - One is initially treated to wafts of peppery spiciness commingling with a somewhat camphoraceous, yet dirty, patchouli. This intriguing and inviting melange floats on an ephemeral cloud of salty fruitiness and spices of cloves and ginger. Aromatic woods, with hints of lemon verbena and minty laurel, serve as a backdrop to this stirring opening. Transitioning to the middle, the woods fade and wisps of florals, with violet-like iris, clover-like rose and sweetly seductive jasmine, interface with the musty earthiness of patchouli, which has taken on a clay-like facet. A nascent, vanillic amber sprinkles the melange, giving the florals a creamy texture, and coaxes a cocoa aspect of patchouli to rise up. Segueing to the robust base, balsamic woods, hay-like beeswax, herbaceous cinnamon, all intermingle and interplay with the vanillic and almond sweetness of benzoin. The heavy, resinous, sweetish amber has come into full bloom. A restrained smoky frankincense reels about. And, a chocolate-like tone presents from the interweaving of coumarin and patchouli. A delightsome drydown ensues. This high-quality composition is definitely unisex, if not leaning masculine, and has average projection and longevity. Its elegance will shine in the fall and winter.

I disagree.

Vintage Dior Homme Intense has a much more pronounced Cocoa. The new formula still has it, just less vanillin/coumarin, and more synthetic vetiver.

The L'Instant family never grabbed me, tried em all, even Cristeaux De Agrumes. Slightly too bitter, even the EDP Extreme.

I too, liked Lutens' Borneo, but not so much cocoa, a very dark, yet sweet chocolate and patchouli. Like a gourmet Angel/AMen.

A great, marshmallow-y Cocoa drydown can be had crazy cheap.......Al Rehab's Choco Musk.

Can't believe I haven't smelled Kokorico yet lol

Something is very weird but I dont get ANY Cocoa from LIDGE.
Best Cocoa for me is from Dior Homme Intense.

Coromandel for a white chocolate powdery drydown

Borneo 1834 is stunning but more of a dank rollercoater - I find the drydown veers more away from chocolate and toward the patchouli side. (Although I love it!)

LIDGE for sure

For me: Dior Homme Intense

Kokorico by Night ; the green notes from the original are more in the background, making the cocoa more prominent.

+3 for JPG's Kokorico. I only have a sample, but I'm really impressed by this one. I don't understand all the hate for this fragrance at all. Granted, it's not a really mainstream scent and might be a bit different, but I found it quite nice. Wonderful, earthy, almost garden soil type note mixed with probably the nicest and clearest cocoa note I've found in a designer fragrance.

Agreed.
Here Bond no. 9 is not well-rated, but guess So New York is what you're searching for.
IMO Nothing has topped LiDGE for pure cocoa in the late drydown. So natural & balanced...not too sweet at all.

Thumbs way up here.

I'm not sure I'd say it has the best cocoa drydown, but it's excellent stuff - especially for a date. Hanae Mori HM was one I debated and almost passed on because I liked it, but I wasn't sure it was worth buying. Eventually I caught a sale, so I bought it. I'm always surprised by how much women like this on me. I mean, yeah, I like it too... but every time I wear it on a date, it seems like she LOVES it. If I wear Aventus, I'm told things like "You smell nice." But if I wear HM... let's just say the feedback is much more naughty. Playful, but naughty. Maybe this stuff just happens to really work on my skin? I don't know... but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Ore is probably my favorite cacao based fragrance, as well as one of my favorite gourmands.
