Great formal scents

Thread Starter
I've been going through my collection and I realized I don't really have anything fitting for a more formal situation. I've heard La Nuit De L'Homme is a good formal; I've also heard that Dolce and Gabbana Pour Homme is a fitting choice. What are your thoughts, and what would you suggest?

Tiffany for Men

La Nuit definitely fits that category (great fragrance). L'Instant de Guerlain (both the EDT and EDP) are something in that category. They have a cacao vibe, very elegant fragrances. Dior Homme and even Dior Homme Intense are also formal scents, a bit more on the metrosexual side, also quite sexy (both vintage and new formulations are fantastic regardless of what is said around here). Another one that I would recommend, and this is a bit different that the ones i mentioned, is Prada Amber Pour Homme. It's a soapy, clean, sophisticated fragrance, very fancy. All of the ones I mentioned above have great projection and longevity and would deliver big time in the formal category.

Obviously everyone has there own perception of what is formal. To me, something like Ungaro III is formal. I would not choose a sweet fragrance like La Nuit as a formal fragrance. Maybe something from the Acqua Di Parma Colonia family? I would certainly go with D&G PH over La Nuit for a formal function, but to me, formal means something a bit more classic.
I definitely wouldn't call La Nuit de L'homme A formal scent, it's a loud mouthed attention whore of a fragrance. It's better suited for a club or date night, although I wouldn't recommend it for any situation.
OP what's your age range? That ought to narrow down choices for you.
If you in early twenties for example, something like Ungaro III is as far away from La Nuit as you get can (speaking from personal burn from that blind purchase) and you probably would not dig it (I am generalizing here of course).

looking for a type of scent as well. How would platinum egoiste do for this?
I would add Lalique pour homme edp
Good for formal occasions and smells very very classy and expensive!
My vote would be 'no'. This is a stellar cologne, but I wouldn't say it is a formal scent.

M - Puredistance
Derby - Guerlain
Invasion Barbare - MDCI
Epic Man - Amouage

Versace Man (the purple bottle) is one I might recommend as formal. It's got a great tobacco vibe to it, and is easily affordable. One of the most underrated scents on the market.

To me, Oakmoss = Formal

Hence +1 for Boucheron PH and Tiffany for Men

Rive Gauche.

I agree with D&G Homme as being good for formal wear.
I find most of the Maître Parfumeur et Gantier (MPG) men's range to be extremely suitable for formal wear, and to a similar extent, so is much of the Trumper range of colognes.

Renato

Ralph Lauren Purple Label. This is definitely boardroom material. It's also unique and rare enough that you will be the one at the event who smells like this. It's available again on the RL website after a long absence. I picked mine up in 2010 at the RL boutique at the Palazzo in Las Vegas.

Agree with these and with the aforementioned Tiffany and Eau Sauvage. I'd add Amouage Gold on the niche end and Jaipur Pour Homme EDP and 1881 on the designer side.

Tiffany for men is very similar to Habit Rouge but with the volume turned way down. Think a powdery floral/citrus. I like it much better than HR. CPMC is a citrus/vanilla with a hint of florals. in some ways similar to Givenchy PM but less citrusy and with A LOT of vanilla.

Could probably think of more, but these come to mind immediately.
