First Impression of Musc Ravageur!!!

Ok, I got in on Heperd's split on the Musc Ravageur obviously because of the hype. I sprayed 2 healthy sprays to my wrist right out of the shower so as nothing else would interfere with the fragrance and boy am I disappointed with the opening to say the least. I'm not too savy on describing notes too well but according to fragrantica this is suppose to resemble a vanilla/cinnamon/clove combo. What I get out of the opening is a powdery, medicinal smell which is rather unpleasant. For those of you who have used Noxema face cream, it smells identical to that. It's been about 45 minutes to an hour and the only prominent note I'm still getting is Vanilla. There is also a musky feeling to it as others have described. The overall smell is very dated. I'm ultimately not sure what to think of MR but usually with a few full wearings, fragrances will grow on me. I find this is pretty daring to wear anywhere in my opinion. I must add though, the sillage is really good as I can smell it strongly as I'm typing this post.

Thanks for sharing your impression on MR, I absolutely love thus juice, need to buy myself a full bottle.
I love this juice. It is in my top five.

I too am underwhelmed with the much hyped Musc Ravageur. I find it to smell old school and a little dated. I don't mind the old school vibe as I'm a fan of Rive Gauche and Tom Ford for Men. I was expecting MR to smell sweeter and more amazing. It's a nice scent for sure, but not for the price it's going for.

Thank you for your review.

One of my faves of all time.

Looking forward to your impression on another scent.
I didn't get the hype with this one either. I will have to try it again soon but my first impression was rather disappointing.
Didn't like MR at first, but it grew on me the more I wore it from the decant I have.

45-1hr is not long enough time to judge this fragrance. For me it continues to develop well into the 8hr range, a beautiful cedar note starts to show. I've gone back and forth on this one, I like it but won't be purchasing a full bottle anytime soon.
i dont know..sometimes this one gives me a sort of salty vanilla coke vibe (in a good way)
The opening is a bit difficult to digest, but the base notes is where the fragrance truly flourishes. I agree that it smells a bit dated, but I figure it's mainly due to the musk. If I were you, try just one spray to the chest or neck area and see how it's like.

Another who thinks this is a wonderful scent.

When I first sprayed MR on me it didn't seemed interesting in the begining but when it settled down I fell in love with it. Just an amazing warm aura surrounded me which projects great and has an amazing lasting power. It is in my top 5 fragrances of all time. Simply an amazing scent

That's funny; I love MR but find it just slightly too sweet. I also find it really clean and cozy, as musks go, so I wonder if I'm anosmic to something in it.

Still, I'm looking forward to trying it again in the warmer weather (if it ever gets warm here), as the heat really brings out the spices and seems to cut the sweetness for me.

I had same experience. First time I was like WTF?! Opening is really medicinal and old school but it grew on me fast. Now it is only really expensive fragrance that I tried so far that actually might be worth cost.
I don't particularly like this juice. Kind of disgusting...
Blind bought a full bottle and I loved it instantly! I enjoy all its phases and it is a favorite of mine.
Only tried this once and didn't love it. Reminds me of Gucci Envy to an extent. My girlfriend said it smelt like cat pee so I was put off and moved on.
I largely avoid top notes and what I got was a decent niche amber frag. I've already got Etro's Ambra and never wear it, since the amber is too strong, so this one didn't impress me at all. I need something with a more complex and balanced drydown.
I like it as well but its best when it is lightly applied.

Max 2 sprays.

Thanks for everyone's responses. Glad I'm not the only one who has the same view towards MR. I will continue testing and as recommended, just one spray to the chest and give it enough time to morph over a few hours.

While Musk is not a genre of scents I care for as a general rule, this one is the best in the category I have smelled to date. I like it.
I found Musc Ravageur to be a well-blended and complex fragrance. It is unfortunate that you did not.
It's extremely overrated. The drydown is nice though, but the opening and mid are pretty foul. 250 for a fragrance is outrageous to begin with, let alone just for a fragrances dry down. I buy a fragrance at a higher price if I enjoy it from opening to finish. This is a huge rip off to me.
I fall into the camp of being confuse the first time I sprayed it, to completely loving it now. It's almost a different scent from when I first smelled it.

Side note, I just checked there prices on all Malle fragrances and it looks like they all went up $10-$20...still worth it but I don't understand they sudden price increase. That being said, I don't think there's really a reason to by a 100mL bottle of this...I can't see wearing it that often to justify that, and it's one that last forever on a few sprays.
did not like it on skin but on paper it was nice in the drydown
post #27 of 45
The opening it's just great while I find the drydown to be much more conventional and not as musky as I generally demand. That being said this is still something that I thoroughly enjoy and I'm glad it's part of my collection.

Totally agree. I really liked MR when it is applied only one spray in chest. And after that wait until nice, smooth and cozy drydown arrive. I have applied MR couple of times too much and then I feel that it is way too much and too thick for my liking. So, be careful with trigger and you may find best parts of Musc Ravageur. Gets even better in the cold weather.
If you looked up any sort of review on this you would have found out the opening is extremely harsh to most people, while others adore it. The longevity of this juice is crazy so it takes a good few hours for the basenotes to develop which is in my opinion, the best stage of it.

The best advice I can give is to not trust your first impression of this fragrance and do not discount it. I tried it very early on in my venture into the niche realm and just wasn't ready for it. I believe that I described it, on more than one occasion, as Carmax lip balm at the beginning and Nestle hot cocoa powder at the end. I just got my hands on some more, and, do not detect either of those smells now. And I find it mezmerizing. This is most likely a case of going too complex too quickly, as I did. Hang on to your decant, hide it in the back behind everything. I bet when you do revisit it you will have a completely different take on it.

Yeah not a fan of Musc Ravageur as well, good thing i got a tiny sample before I almost made an impulse buy and had my hopes destroyed of finding a niche vanilla bomb...till I found Tobacco Vanille . The way I see it I have to love the whole fragrance experience, if the opening sucks and it gets better later on (though in my case that medicinal smell was there throughout yuck) it's not really worth it.

I was so excited to smell the much hyped Musc Ravageur when I was at Barney's a couple months back and when I smelled it, I put it back...not for me, maybe it will grow on me, but I liked a lot of other Frederic Malles a lot better.

I have to say I quite liked this at first and like it a bit more on every application, I get a warm cinammon/vanilla and musk scent from mine in the dry down that has great sillage and fair projection. Wearing it to the office and with friends has illicited compliments - that plus I like it makes it a winner for me.

So I'm wearing Musc Ravageur today and I gotta be honest, the opening sort of smells like a zoo to me. It totally reminds me of walking around the zoo in the summer with the musky smell in the air. The musk is strong in this one. It dries down nicely though. I still get the old man vibe from it, but in a good way. It smells like something a well dressed gentleman would wear in the 1950's.

Me too. In fact I hated it at first. Then gave it another chance and loved it! Then got the bottle after using the decant frequently.
As many others have said, this is a total grandpa/old man smell. I find it very unappealing (my girl said to throw the sample away when it showed up yesterday). I wore it again today and received my first complaint from a total stranger (she was nice about it but we both agreed it smelled terrible, she was laughing at how bad it was!)

I know this thing has a huge following but blech, it smells like what I'd imagine your average drug store cologne from many decades ago would smell like. Not a sexy smell in the slightest, just a very linear old man's clove/lavender scent, not a trace of musk.

That's what I thought when I gave it a run.

How did this one get so hyped up? I can understand Pure Malt and DHI, but MR isn't on the same level IMHO.

Maybe its just chemistry thing. On me it smells much better than on my girlfriend. IMO Musc Ravageur quality (of ingredients) is league above DHI and 3 leagues above Pure Malt. Except of top notes it never smells like something made in laboratory but rather like raw natural ingredients. It is definitely not for everyone and fits more to mature men.

I blame a lot of it on some on the hypemen on youtube. I know some people love but, I really could care less about MR but I have split 4 bottles of it and could probably do a bottle a week if i put the split up. A while back I tried to split Bois d'Orage, which i think is a far superior fragrance, and 2 people signed up in a month.....

I like it a lot, but the dry-down is almost too sweet for me to handle. The opening part is the best IMO.

For me it's the opposite, I don't find the opening that pleasant but I like the drydown
post #44 of 45
I love Musc Ravageur. The only part of the fragrance that I find slightly cloying Is in the mid where the clove dominates. The drydown is absolutely stunning, with Vanilla and Tonka Bean. I also get a slight hint of chocolate that slightly reminds me of Angel Men. I have gotten several compliments wearing it. Truly a very unique scent !!
love it from top till bottom! its actually one of the first scents i think deserves the high price tag it goes for.
