Thierry Mugler A*men vs Fahrenheit?

Thread Starter
Hey guys

I'm kind of new to the whole cologne thing (at least, choosing a cologne other than acqa di gio or 1 million!) so i came to this forum. It seems you guys take this stuff pretty seriously, but i dont have the money to shell out for niche fragrances like bond or creed. I'm just looking for a versatile cologne that will be good for most occasions. I live in Australia, and although were heading into winter in a couple of months, it never gets really cold over here so a something suitable for warm weather would be good.

Thierry Mugler A*men and Fahrenheit seem to be rated consistently high on these forums, so i'm considering them. Which one would you recommend, or would you recommend something different?

Im only 18 by the way so nothing too "older" smelling if you know what i mean, but hopefully nothing that smells like middle school either! (e.g axe)
Both are great IMO and I have both, but in my opinion I'd choose Fahrenheit .
Have you smelled A*men and Fahrenheit? They're not exactly safe blind buys.

My advice: Get in on a split of Aventus
Hello and welcome miscer

Fahrenheit is definitely more versatile but it still may get cloying in hot weather. Also I dont think this is scent for 18 years old but it is definitely more younger crowd friendly than most of basenotes hyped fragrances.

Some good allrounders that suits late teens IMO are: Gucci PH II, 212 Men, Versace Pour Homme, Roadster, Fahrenheit Absolute

Thanks dreamer. Is fahrenheit absolute the same as the fahrenheit i was talking about? And fahrenheit you mean by dior?

Also ive heard that 212 is very overused. I dont know if it is, but id prefer to avoid anything overused if possible.

By the way are these suitable for regular daytime wear? I wouldnt want to be wearing some overpowering club scent during the day, would smell ridiculous.

There are three versions of Dior Fahrenheit right now.

Original Fahrenheit.
Fahrenheit Absolute
Fahrenheit Aqua

They are all different scents.

Fahrenheit original being most distinctive and powerfull (on my skin it is mostly leather + motor oil + violets).

Fahrenheit Absolute is sweeter and spicier version that shares only violet in top notes with original. Its IMO more versatile and easier to like by masses (Fahrenheit original is more love/hate fragrance) (on my skin it is mostly myrrh + incense)

Fahrenheit Aqua I tried just once and it couldnt stand a chance against original and Absolute. Its fresh summer scent with Fahrenheit DNA but less interesting than both.

I keep reading here on basenotes how some scents are overused but where I live men rarely wear fragrances so I can wear Acqua Di Gio everyday and still be almost unique..

IMO Fahrenheit is suitable for regular daytime wear (but it may be too much for classes). A*Men is less suitable for regular wear (you could get away with it maybe during winter but still too much for classes).

Personally I would recommend Gucci II (women loves it, its easy to wear without being generic and on my skin it has average projection and above average longevity)

I'm leaning towards fahreneit now, but as well as your post, ive done a bit of searching around the forums, and does fahrenheit really smell like motor oil? That doesnt sound good at all! Also, i hear it smells very musky. Would that be unideal for me, since im 18? I generally associate musky colognes with people over 30.

I guess id consider the Amen for a club scent since you mentioned its not as versatile, but for now i'm just looking for something thats good for daytime (but would probably end up using at night anyway :P)

Motor oil / or someone mention gasoline vibe is what makes it unique amongst other fragrances. It is well blended with another notes so its not as bad as it sounds. I love it, my girlfriend love it. Here it is more popular than Acqua Di Gio.

Having both Fahrenheit and A*Men is good idea. I love and own both. It should not be hard to sample them in your local perfumery (if you have any around) and I highly recommend it because none of them is safe blind buy, especially for beginners.

Also, it seems in the reviews section, you cant really sort by ratings. Whats the best reviewed (as in positive/negative review ratio) cologne on this site?

neither of them in my opinion, but if i'd have to choose one i would tell you to blind buy Farenheit.
I remember the first time i smelled A*men i didn't like it at all, now i love it
post #13 of 74
I'd go with Fahrenheit out of these two, it's more mature (but not "old" smelling either) and quite versatile for both daytime and evening wear

Me too!
If it doesn't get too hot over there, Fahrenheit might work but neither one is for hot weather so maybe you should consider something citrus/fruity, aquatic...

Fahrenheit can be worn during daytime but not A*men, IMO
post #16 of 74
Firstly, welcome to BN.

Second, yes they both may be rated high, but they are also both very hated, and both 2 of the more complex designer fragrances. I would say for your age, location, and purpose, I'd go with something more along the lines of Rochas Man, Hanae Mori H.M., Black XS, Unforgiven, or something.

what would you guys consider hot weather? remember im in australia, and id say most days its around 20-25 degress celscius right now to give you an idea. and cologneist, what is hanae mori like? Ive seen very good reviews of it.
I'd highly recommend that you track down A*Men and Fahrenheit in a local department store before you take the plunge. Neither are safe blind buys and both are totally different from one another. Personally I'd go for Fahrenheit though.

Do you think itd be fine for australian weather though? even in winter it never really dips under 15 degrees.
Fahrenheit is a great choice. A*Men imo is a vile fragrance.

I think it would be fine. Fahrenheit can be worn all year round.

+1. While you may very well end up loving A*men, blind buying is a big no-no.

Totally different fragrances. Both great. Get both.

Both are not good for blind buy, I like A*men, perfect for night outs but a no no for daytime unless you're in a air conditioned environment. The motor oil smell in Fahrenheit is really dominant to my nose so I'm not a fan of Fahrenheit
post #30 of 74
I have and really enjoy them both. BUT... neither are safe blind buys, in my opinion. Please try before you buy

Fahrenheit smells of crushed violet leaves, oil, and leather and is a wonderful date scent. It is deep, mysterious, and unequivocally masculine. It is OK to wear at work if you use it sparingly. When I think of colognes for an 18 year old, Fahrenheit is not one of the scents that immediately comes to my mind. That being said, you should wear what YOU like, not what I like. I wear it in the fall, winter, and cooler part of spring. In my opinion, this is one of the best fall fragrances for men.

A*Men is a patchouli bomb, with a strong tar note in the opening, and a fantastic, powerful, choclolate dry down. It is one of the best clubbing scents on the market and works exceptionally well in the winter. I cannot fathom wearing it during the day in the heat of summer. A*men is extremely strong, with tremendous projection and longevity. You will have a "cloud" of perfume around you.
Fahrenheit by Christian Dior - perhaps, one of the best, green fragrances, apart from its groundbreaking, dirty aspects ... quite versatile, with excellent longevity and projection ...
The one you like better. They're so different in style, it's like asking if you should purchase swim trunks or a bicycle.

I consider Obsession to be to heavy for daytime summer. i think of it as a more cold weather and/or evening scent.

seeing lots of good reviews for Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme. would you guys recommend it?

The last thing i want is to end up with something like 1 million and end up smelling like every other club guido out there.

LOL. Agreed.

I like both and own Fahrenheit, but would recommend that a younger person (OP) start with something lighter/more versitile for the summer.

Maybe one of the Tommy Bahamas or Crome would fit better. Another good one would be an Issay Miyake.

just wondering if its actually decent/distinguishable. the average non basenoter might confuse it for aqua, just saying. id prefer something that stands out (in a good way)

H.M. is unique but versatile. It's a gourmand with a floral heart. I think it can be worn in cold or hot weather because of its array of notes. To sum it up.. it smells like a creamy lemon dipped in mint and sprinkled with light chocolate.

Miscer:

Both AMen and Fahrenheit are great fragrances, but I still say you should test them at a local big box store before you buy them

A*Men is a sweet chocolate-coffee gourmand scent while Fahrenheit is honeysuckle green-grass earth scent, so it is up to you which one is better, as both of them did what was intended for them well.

Personally, I favor Fahrenheit.

alright it looks like ill be going for the l'eau d'issey. my only concern is that itll be too similar too aqua di gio. am i right in thinking that? im sure some people will say no way, but i doubt the average person has as a discerning sense of smell as most basenoters.

Go to the store and spray some on a test card or even on your skin and then just leave. You don't need to buy it. If you like it then order online. Simple. No need to buy blind with these popular scents.

Absolutely not. One of the worst I have smelled to date. You were on the right track with Fahrenheit. I recommend you stick to your initial instincts... That is a great one, especially in vintage form.

First of all, any scent can be worn by anyone of any age. The whole "aimed at older people" is complete bunk in my book.
As for L'eau d'Issey, it just smells offensive to me. The opening and heart notes in particular are completely off-putting (the base notes are a bit more tolerable, but that is relative). Let your own nose be your guide and if you like it more power to you, but to me it is one of the worst I have smelled.

In on rep trade...
I will echo what others have been saying - none of these are safe blind buys. I similarly was excited to try d'Issey after discovering basenotes only to find I really didn't like it, particularly the sharp opening.

For what it's worth coming into the Australian winter you'll be fine wearing most frags so don't let this sway you too much.

Hard to say. Probably Fahrenheit but Amen is fine too if moderately applied.
If I was forced to pick I guess I'd go for Fahrenheit as the preferable daily scent.

edit: Just reading the thread a little more thoroughly now, did you go and buy Issey instead?
You should definitely go and check all these out first if you can. Most Myer stores stock all three so it should be easy for you to wear them once or twice before you fork out the $$$ for a full bottle.

Sure. Don't go to Myer to buy them, just to test them. If you do go it's worth checking out the new Issey sport and L'Homme Libre. La Nuit de L'Homme is worth checking out too.
