Ash's take on Basenotes.

10/10 solid advice.
My interest in reviews may be best represented by a bell curve. At first I didn't know enough for the reviews to mean much. Once I developed some understanding but hadn't sampled many fragrances (relative to now), I was very interested in trying to figure out who wrote the "best" reviews. Now I realize how many factors are involved, and how hard it is to determine how close someone's taste is to yours. Yes, if you are not too discerning, the reviews are helpful. You will learn things like which frags are basically Le Male clones. I'm at the point, however, where a frag would have to really "hit the sweet spot" for me to consider buying a bottle (other than deals that are "too good" to pass up), and that is something you can't get from a review, unless perhaps it is a very simple frag. Since I tend to like complex ones, very rarely is a review all that helpful these days, though I still find them amusing or interesting on some level.

I can never get tired of watching his reviews!

Then you'll love this one. Skip to 1:30 and 2:50. 2:50 is just classic stuff.

For anyone that's interested he's made quite a few video's in the last couple of weeks. The entertainment value is great.
Good points, but it bugs me that he doesn't look at the camera.
He's so damn cute. Not just him, but his wide-eyed earnestness. His pronunciations are so bad, but I hope no one rails on him too much for that on this thread. He seems like a really good, regular guy. Like.

Maybe he's camera shy? He'd probably knocked his webcam off alignment earlier without realizing it.

LOL @ 'nich-ey'. I don't what is it about Ash but he has a certain presence, albeit in an oft-kilter kinda way, that makes him watchable. And that cute pussycat is a fine touch! Rock on, Ash!
Ash seems like a really great guy and I appreciate what he's doing. peace
post #13 of 46
Can definitely appreciate his reviews and what he's saying.. Pronunciations in the fragrances world always seem tough, even when I know how to say it properly I still feel weird saying it lol

Great advice indeed!
I do Absolutely love Niche, however there are still gorgeous mainstream Fragrances out there, e.g Chanel Egoiste and much more, another aspect here on basenotes that is often neglected is " The Op's Economical situation" , Because , believe or not some people are not able to afford 300,- USD on e.g. Jubilation XXV, neither are up to splits (Yes I speak for myself, I rather buy a perfume in its original bottle and box), therefore I believe we should try to be a bit more sensitive before advising people. Reading yesterday some threads, I recalled one of them, about a student asking for advice (This guy highlighted, that he was keen on budget) some Basenoter advised him : Frederic Malle - Geranium Pour Monsieur , sorry. but I have not found it a clever advice, could quote George Michael" Sometimes the fragrances Do not make the man ", Sorry I believe he meant clothes instead of Fragrances

Terry D. Hermays isn't a fragrance. It's a guy. And he owes me money; $50, to be exact. That prick.

Lol, Ash's pronunciations haven't improved - in fact I think they've even gotten worse, but his advice is sound and while I don't think most of the scents he mentioned are truly amazing, they are all at least very unique and distinctive and full of character.

I heartily agree with the foregoing.

Ash is a down-to-earth Joe, who is very knowledgeable and imparts pearls of wisdom in his nonchalant delivery.

God bless him, and one will be well served by his continued counsel.
Too lazy to watch the video. What does he have to say about us?
It looks like someone let him out of the dark bathroom he used to film in. Yay! Go Ash!

The french pronounciation IS worse- even the english has suffered

tee-eir-E-D-Her-Meees

Pure melt??? Malt

werm??? did he mean WARM?

I just feel phenominal after watching those! What enthusiasm for scent! And respect for Mr Grr-lin!

Really, the cat is doing the reviews. It's quite a good ventriloquist act. The Ash puppet is very lifelike, but something about the eyes gives it away.

I wonder if he knows he has a fan club. Even among niche-eh lovers.

Yes, I wondered that myself
He's trying to sort things out, he's thinking, hoping to help others. And while he's butchering language, that's the least unpleasant thing to butcher.
Oh God, that cat is AMAZING! Rally beautiful cutie. Congratulations Ash!
I really love this guy. I could listen to him talk about anything. Who cares if he cant pronounce some words, he is awesome.

^^^^^ This +1.

Love the cat too!

Good advice.

My rule of thumb is if foetidus AND Off-Scenter hate it, it's probably no good.
Ash rocks
Does anyone else think he's got two glass eyes? That's my theory.
Trying to get a hold of PETA, that cat didn't look to happy. Pour thing forced to sit there in front of a camera when it doesn't want to. Leave your cat alone.
Good advice, but he needs a shave and a solid color shirt. Cat is nice touch.

Ash is a cutie ! Bad pronunciation and all . I am fascinated by what he is actually looking at, instead of the camera. Nichay rules !
So are you making fun of him, or what?
He seems like a nice guy but he's stating the obvious....

I noticed some of the fragrances he's reviewing are inexpensive hidden gems such as Montana Parfum (Red) which he probably bought because of basenote's reviews. His tastes are surely getting better, but he's still holding onto Black XS being a masterpiece.
What a thread. Entertaining to say the least.
Tim and Eric only wish they were this good. Those quick pics of the bottles are genius.

He is looking at his cheatsheet of phonetically spelled out fragrance names of course. Tee-eir-E-D-Her-Meees , nichay, etc

Pretty sound advice... but I expect to see that cat's head scotch-taped onto its body in a future video.
