Hugo by Hugo Boss Reformulation Inquiry

I'm hoping someone is quite familiar with this fragrance. I happen to have two bottles. The first was manufactured in October 2007 (original square logo on box/bottle), and the second was manufactured in September 2011 (simply say "HUGO" across the bottle). I detect the slightest difference between the two, but a friend of mine prefers the 2007 fragrance by a long shot. In fact, she was "repulsed" by the 2011 fragrance.

There are some differences in the ingredient listed on the boxes. The only ingredient unique in the 2007 bottle is Disodium EDTA. According to ewg.org, Disodium EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent, used to sequester and decrease the reactivity of metal ions that may be present in a product. The unique ingredients the 2011 bottle are BHT, Benzyle Cinnamate, and Benzyl Benzoate. According to ewg.org, BHT is a toluene-based ingredient used as a preservative in food and personal care products, Benzyl Cinnamate is an ester of benzyl alcohol and cinnamic acid used in perfuming, and Benzyl Benzoate is used as a solvent and preservative.

Has anyone else detected a change in this fragrance over the past few years?

Interesting that you say this. I thought the same myself but wasn't sure if my taste/nose had changed instead. I originally owned this back in around 2002. I then bought another bottle in November last year. In my opinion, it was much worse than I remembered. It was harsh, synthetic (even more so than normal) and actually gave me an instant headache. I ended up selling the bottle on eBay.

Wasn't aware that this had changed significantly.

I own the new bottle, 150ml and imo it smells the same as old bottle as of 2001; actually it smells really awesome, also in drydown.
Bottles of Hugo by Hugo Boss made before 2001 contain true oakmoss and are better in the drydown and a little better overall.

(In 2001 IFRA made the regulations/restriction on the use of real oakmoss)
