The Remains of the Meetup

Had a little meetup yesterday in my apartment with two other BNers. Firehorse was going to join us, too, but we were bummed she couldn't make it at the last minute.

First of all, I didn't realize until I looked at this picture later that we were total cavemen. Sniffing scents, drinking wine, and eating all at the same table. At least we took our cigarettes outside.

I had a great time meeting you both. I continue to be amazed at what awesome/smart/dashing/tasteful people are contributing to BN.

An incomplete list of things that got sniffed:

  • Bond No. 9 Fire Island, I Love NY Earth Day, Harrods Oud
  • CdG Kyoto
  • Feu d'Issey
  • EdP L'Eau d'Hiver, Angeliques sous la Pluie
  • Patou Pour Homme
  • HdP Ambrarem
  • Jubilation XXV, Memoir Man
  • Creed Bois du Portugal and Vintage Tabarome
  • JAR Bolt of Lightning, Shadow, Diamond Water, Ferme tes Yeux
  • Liz Zorn Solstice
  • Slumberhouse Norne, Miehl, Jeke, Grev, Mordor
  • Cuir de Russie EDT and Parfum
  • Ormonde Man
  • Kerosene R'Oud Elements
  • Kinski
  • Tirrenico
  • Silver Collar DHI vs. Black Collar DHI from 1/11 (verdict: same scent)
  • TDC da Bachmakov, des Sens et Bois, Sel de Vetiver
  • CB IHP 2nd Cumming, AmBrosius
  • Oriscent Borneo 3000
  • Secretions Magnifique (the night is over once this comes out)

Unfortunately, we did not get to cacio's masculine florals pack or ODriu, which was kind of the point of getting together. I don't know how time caught up to us so quickly.

There was one casualty by the end of the night. Slumberhouse Miehl, that viscous (viscious?) honeyed goo, leapt out of its vial and attacked a Chanel Cuir de Russie. We cleaned her up as best we could, but she will bear the scars for the rest of her shelf life. These upstart American niches are really going after the big designers.

(I'm certain R'Oud Elements bullied Dior Homme Intense when we were outside, as there were tear stains on its silver collar when we came back in.)

So sorry I missed this, so bummed out. I get migraines about 3 times a year.... why did it have to be yesterday.

Thank you for this lovely account ! Cavemen! *LOL*
Firehorse- I hope you are feeling better from the migraine now.

Wow. That's some serious sniffing. Don't your noses get tired after what? The 10th strip?

Thanks Mimi.

Brian I wanted you to try the Iunx at the same time as passage d'enfer for a comparison. Next time.

Did you guys find new exciting fragrances?

People do seem to get them exactly when they would want them least. We'll do it again soon.

Yes. That's when we start spraying them on each other.

Yes. Of the things I hadn't smelled before, Solstice was really original and compelling. Fire Island was also a great cheap thrill that I will probably pick up a bottle of. Also really enjoyed Patour Pour Homme, and I got a small decant of that. R'Oud Elements will be getting a wearing as well.

The big surprise of the night was how much different Vintage Tabarome smells on two different people's skin. It was a real eye opener.

Looks like you had a fun time.

Brian, thanks so much for having us over. I had a fantastic time, and you were the ever gracious and generous host.

I can't stress enough how fun it is to meet with others that are passionate about fragrances. It certainly helps when you have a great guy like Brian to host. The meet up will certainly be one of the best highlights from my trip to New York.

Of course, my Chanel Cuir de Russie has some choice words to say to your sample of Miel. Why can't everyone just play nice...

Oh that sounds like so much fun

Yeah, I love smelling my favorite fragrances on other Basenoters skin, skin chemistry is so weird.

What did you guys think about the Oriscent Borneo 3000? Is it really $5,000?!!!

Great selection of equally impressive scent masterpieces. A fully-fledged, extensive and professional sampling session, which makes me congratulate you for exquisite tastes.

Sounds like you had a great time!

Brian Chambers, which was your favourite that you tried out of all those?

About half that list was from my wardrobe, so excluding those...I would say Solstice. It is possible however that R'Oud Elements could go to the top of my list after I give it a wearing. It's hard to say after only one try.

Brian, just to clarify, the Soivohle Solstice you tried is the 21-11 version, which is a limited edition of Solstice released to celebrate the 2011 winter solstice - it is a mixed media version of Solstice as opposed to the all natural. It would be interesting to compare the two.

I've never smelled true oud before - I have to say, the Borneo 3000 was amazing. I could still smell it the next day, and the way it evolves over the hours is very impressive (Brian, I couldn't bring myself to shower off the 10 different fragrances I had on my arms, so I just wore long sleeves when I went out later that night).

THAT is hilarious!
What a lovely sounding day for you Big Apple sniffers. Sad that firehorse got a migraine. They are miserable!

Hahahaha... I am ashamed to admit, I did.

It didn't matter, I couldn't smell the Aventus after an hour. It was great to get home and smell my arms all over again. Borneo 3000 was the standout after six hours.

Firehorse, I'm sorry you had a migraine. I get those too, I know how terrible migraines can be.

response to a deleted post...

I'm glad you guys had a good time Wow Borneo 3000 -- SOOOO curious about that one, its like a legend. Soivohle Solstice sounds good too.

Did anyone ride the subway home smelling like 20 perfumes? Sometimes I end up like this after going to Barney's, with people politely twitching their noses sitting next to me.

Cool! Just..... cool. What a great selection of fragrances, too. You could consume Boone's Farm and Kraft Singles with those fragrances, and still have class to spare!

Glad you got a chance to try out R'oud Elements, too.

Sorry to hear about your migraine, firehorse. Hopefully you'll get another opportunity soon.
