Its Creed VS cheaper Alternatives

Thread Starter
How would you react if someone complimented your Creed scent but recognized it as the cheaper version of it?

GIT - Cool Water
MI - Unforgivable
SMW - Silver Al-Rehab
OV - Mugler Cologne

Man found dead after well intentioned compliment...

Thank them for the compliment. No big deal.
I would flip out. I don't know what I'd do. It'd make me question the prices I paid for Creed. I'd probably be declared insane or worse...I'd just purchase Cool Water (gasps!)

Honestly I'd probably think nothing of it, though I'd be thinking "well they know enough to know *insert creed alt here* but they can't distinguish them" and I'd go about my day with a feeling of superiority.
Remember, I smell this stuff all day. I'd much rather be surrounded by a higher quality scent cloud, even if it's just me and a few others that notice. Don't forget, many would probably mistake Invasion Barbare for Brut. That don't make Brut a good idea!

Don't forget Joop Homme and Original Santal.

Although I prefer OS by a long shot. It's fantastic.

lol, sorry, I can't help myself with these
post #8 of 36
Personally I wouldnt be too affected. I know how different the quality is and as long as I really enjoy the fragrance, I wouldnt mind the price.
I would give them a polite smile and curse them on the inside.
Couldn't care less. The only one of those listed that I have and wear is Green Irish Tweed. If someone thinks it's Cool Water, then so what? There's nothing wrong with Cool Water, but I can tell the difference, and that's what matters to me.

Considering I hang around mostly degenerates (the majority of my friends are the first generation of their family to walk on two legs), I'd be impressed if they even knew what all of the fragrances in the OP were, let alone able to roughly identify them

If it were a woman, I would take it as a sincere compliment and invite her to dinner at the most luxurious restaurant in town. I would treat her the way a gentleman should treat a lady and maybe even ask her to be my wife one day. Then I could look back and laugh at the time she mistook my Original Santal for Joop! Homme.

If it were a guy, whatever expression I had on my face at the time would disappear and in it's place would be a stern look as if they had just wiped the gum off the bottom of their shoe with a little crying puppy's face. Little beads of sweat would trickle down my brow as my core body temperature approached 101 degrees. My eyes would turn bloodshot as the rage washed over me. My fists would clench so hard that my fingernails would dig into my palms and they would bleed profusely. My breathing would become louder and deeper as I try to keep whatever evil blind demon monkey rage inside of me at bay. My mind would be racing at 200mph as I try to find the right words to tell this schmuck just how insulting his "compliment" was. I would look him dead in the eyes, take a deep breath and say "Thanks man. It's actually Creed Original Santal, but they do smell similar." Then I'd turn and go about my way whistling dixie and thinking about where I want to eat lunch today.

That's how I feel. I see guys getting complimented all the time for smelling "soooooo good" with something cheap/designer. It's what matters to me that matters most.

I'd take a walk along the river (it would be raining lightly), contemplating as to why I did let CREED rape my wallet.
I wear my fragrances for my own pleasure, I know their quality and so do I know their price tag and quality, other's opinions do not interest me at all.

@ mesaboogie - You should write for Leno, if you do not already - a "schmuck" huh .

In the real world, people compliment fragrance without any reference to what it is or might be most of the time. They simply say "I like the fragrance you're wearing" or "you smell good, I like it." Although I would tell someone who is really interested (and polite) exactly what it is, what fragrance I wear is a personal matter, sort of like brand of socks or underwear. Cost. etc., is really not part of the equation and I would not participate in any kind of degenerative discussion along this line with anyone.

True in every way OS is better quality. Try Mont blanc individuel, its also like OS with a little touch of aventus. It's not sickly sweet like Joop and a little more cleaner scent. I think this one is more closer to OS than Joop but I let you be the judge of that.

Martin, I agree with every word of this.

Keep em coming please!

If some one called out Al-Rehab Silver i would piss myself.
i steer clear of GIT and MI because of the popularity of the cheap knock-offs.
btw Al-Rehab Silver is a near perfect knockoff of SMW. Just picked it up for $9.99 for 30ml spray incl shipping on ebay.
Niche scents in general are made for the wearer to appreciate the sometimes subtle differences. When a fragrance is superior in smell and I really enjoy wearing it, then the price doesn't matter to me. If someone compliments me on wearing Cool Water when it's GIT then I respond with a simple thank you. Money well spent.

I agree. Most people haven't been exposed to GIT/niche scents so you can't really blame them for not knowing.

Also-
Virgin Island Water- Tommy Bahama Set Sail St Barts
Original Santal- Mont Blanc Individuel (Much better than JOOP!)
Millesime Imperial- Ed Hardy Love & Luck

I too am a believer in Al Rehab Silver. It makes me wish I hadn't bought my SMW. Lasts longer too.

Do you agree with me that Creed scents are so simple that other houses can make the copies so easily? Of course the copies can't be as good as the original, that's why they are so much cheaper. With Amouage or PG or Serge Lutens, it doesn't happen.

If SLs and Amouages were appealing to the mainstream they would be copied just as much as Creed is.

I don't they they made fakes of Aventus yet.

They are still deciding whether to replicate the pineapple batch or the smoky batch.
I think by the end of this year there will be an Aventus knockoff released.

What about the fact that Creed themselves have copied quite a few scents? Himalaya, Original Vetiver, and Original Santal all came out after Paco Robanne XS, Mugler Cologne, and Monte Blanc Individual.

They were smart to copy great fragrances also.

I can't wait for them to make a copy of Pure Malt. Then another designer will make a copy of the Creed and Pure Malt will essentially be back on the market.
