well, this should be fun.

1st reaction.... WHOA.....

2nd reaction... COOL!

3rd reaction... HOW??????

Very interesting. Thanks for the news! Not sure what this will be like, but you have to admit - Chanel only does top-shelf advertising.

Fun fact - my wife ran and grabbed me and dragged me to the TV so I could see a Chanel ad that she thought was VERY good - it was Keira Knightley on the motorbike - for Coco Mademoiselle, I think, or maybe Coco.
It's so misleading to say that he's the "new face of Chanel No 5" - he'll be the new celebrity that is endorsing the perfume.
first reaction: Eeeewww...
second reaction: Why?
third reaction: And The Money Will Roll Right In... (words and music by Nirvana)
First reaction: uh oh
Second reaction: ooohhh
Third reaction: oh no
Fourth reaction: no way will I buy that
Fifth reaction: what will they think of next
Sixth reaction: any gimmick is better than no gimmick
post #6 of 68
I think it's great.
I wouldn't doubt if Coco Chanel was still alive...
Theyre tried to be innovative with a man but, Brad Pitt?
He dont have the luxurious reserved charm and also he isnt in the top of his carrer, as the previous faces.

Maybe George Clooney would be a better option.

The perfect face would be Tom Ford, but its impossible!
My one and only reaction is noooooo
I'm not a Chanel No. 5 kind of woman, but still - Brad Pitt????
I don't get it. Why Brad Pitt? I like him as an actor, but he doesn't really seem to fit. I think Clooney or Daniel Craig would have been a better choice if they are going to use a man.

But why use a man at all? Are they trying to boost sales of le monstre even more? Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather see a beautiful woman in the ads. Maybe Charlize Theron, or Rachel Weisz.

No! You're tasteful!!! Angelina Jolie would also be an excellent choice. Charlize is already on J'Adore's ad.

Ah, that's right. The Dior people have good taste - Charlize is stunning in those ads.

Huhu!
I think it's a cool idea... out of the usual frame! Always good
post #15 of 68
Wow! Charlize looks amazing in that one.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the Brad Pitt No. 5 ad. Surely, there will be a woman in the ad as well, and not just Brad roaming around a rain-slick Paris street at night ... I mean, how would that work? Is he supposed to be wearing it?

Yeah. As always she looks amazing!
I also think there'll be a woman on the ad, such as on Armani Code Donna and Gucci Guilty and 212 ones.

I think it's pretty cool, too - but only because I have total faith in Chanel marketing. They simply don't make mistakes, and they generally have some twist in the curve that people don't see, and they're way ahead of it. Whatever it is, it will work. It may not work as far as the perfumista community is concerned, but it will work out in the real world, where cash hits the counter.

Man - Charlize Theron.... The difference between pictures like that, and her role in "Monster" - what an amazing actor!
Charlize looks photoshopped in that one, but that's pretty much how all ads are..too flippin photoshopped. Ugh. It looks too fake. And Lancome ads..so bad! Lol.

But anyway..on Pitt..

First reaction: Whhaa?
Second: I am so tired of Brad Pitt, been tired of him since that one movie where he fishes in Montana, lol.

My husband's reaction: He's the whhaa? Number..5?? Isn't that a woman's perfume? That's freakin weird, shakes his head then repeats..freakin weird. I LOLd. Haha.

I like this news. Can't wait to see what they do.

LOL

Yeah - fortunately I missed that one! He's in permanent good graces with me for 12 Monkeys!
Around 20-30 years too late. Kudos for using old men, I guess.
LOL! Haha, that was soo funny! (AD- OH- BAY) too funny!

I actually have taken several college courses in photography, I know just how much is photoshopped..it's crazy. It's true, if one doesn't work out..it's cool, you can photoshop a body any shape or size, make someone looked ripped or whatever, it's pretty ridiculous!

Oh, and I hope he cuts that hair for #5 ads, lol. Cut that hair already! haha.
Should be interesting!! Maybe he will be portrayed as buying No.5 for someone, then perhaps dabs some on himself, and then get surrounded by adoring women!!....Just a thought:We will soon see!!
To me Charlize is even better without photoshop. They had to sweat to make her ugly (?) on Monster; what a movie!!!!
Other good faces to this ad:
Adriana Lima:

Gisele Bündchen:

Completely "nature" would be the best way. I love her anyway!!!!

Chanel can do no wrong But I'm a little biased
I think the ad will turn out fine, as they surely have some idea what they are doing with this new approach.

They screwed up the Egoiste campaign, though. I remember reading an interview with Polge or Wertheimer that their biggest regret was that the ad campaign for Egoiste seemed to have hurt it's commercial success significantly in the US.

Lol now I want to go see it

Weird move by Chanel, especially by selecting a male and Brad Pitt, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would be in a Chanel campaign let alone wear NO.5. Maybe if they picked someone like ryan gosling or something lol. I agree though, angelina jolie would be perfect in a NO.5 campaign. I guess its good for all the guys that rock some NO.5 haha

He roams the streets of Paris, sniffing the air. What is that alluring scent? Sniffing, running across the street. Is it her, on the corner? No. It rains. He pouts. He follows the scent into the lobby of a glamorous hotel, walks toward the elevator. It's her! The doors are closing, we see a glimpse of an Angelina look-alike, winking. The End.

Where is my consultant fee, Chanel?

Ha! You can relax Moore I was warning the Chanel script writers. If I see Brad skipping across the street, and pouting in the rain, I want some money.

There is an unconfirmed rumour that Chanel is planning a No.5 Pour Homme (as per Daily ELLE, and via Perfume Shrine). Maybe that's the one Brad will be fronting? Would make more sense. And what an interesting concept, strange that a masculine version of No.5 hasn't happened sooner.
But, if there were a CHANEL NO. 5 Pour Homme, why Brad Pitt as a model ? He personifies "country boy" and surely there are more suave men for an ad like that.

Yuuum, this would be a good launch! It's supposed to be the first Chanel on male's line that I'll feel like " WOW". I hope some roses, aldehydes and vetiver on it.

Young Brad....mmmmmmmm in those chaps in Thelma and Louise. Now THAT would have been an Ahmaayzzing! Chanel No 5 advert.

Brad today, raddled by Life? No thank you

That was one of my suspicions. He would be positioned rather perfectly for introducing it to the American market. He has both macho and sophisticate cred. He's Hollywood royalty and has permanent coastal appeal, but he still has traction with middle America. Although, even if that is the plan, it might just be smart to use him for pour femme right now, to lay the marketing groundwork for a future pour homme.

no. 5 Pour Homme would be a total blind buy for me. More than a blind buy, in fact. It may be the only fragrance I've ever promised to buy, while it was still just an unconfirmed rumor.

Oh but there is always the miracle of Photoshop! If Chanel wants Brad The Younger it can be done, easily.

I saw a recent spread of Sharon Stone in Vogue Brazil, where she was made to look no more than 22 years old. It was the perfect collision of insanity and vanity.

Mayday! Mayday!

If they play the "Chanel No.5 homme" card, they're signaling a far more worse global economic crisis than we thought! Time to stock up on beans and corned beef if the ads pop up.

LOL! You don't know how many times I've thought the exact same thing. Chanel has held onto that card for SO long!!!

However....

(1) Crisis breeds opportunity - precisely because when things get desperate, people get real. This is the best time to take the risk, IMO.

(2) I believe they simply have to do it while Polge is not just in the house, but in his prime. I think Eau Premiere showed that he understands no. 5 like no other. I firmly believe that he has the pieces in place to do this.
Too bad for the models, their jobs seem meaningless next to celebrities nowadays.
As this is such a guessing game ...

and lots of presumptions are being made right now and here by the members, I wonder whether any one from the industry (in the public relations spying field) is READING Basenotes and is GETTING SUITABLE IDEAS, or

whether the advertising campaign is already all laid out, ready to go, and whoever is reading is laughing (chuckling) ??

You might be onto something here, presenting some interesting facts

Though, consider the consequences if the whole industry comes crashing down on us once Chanel has put the snowball in motion. Names are flashing by when I think of it... Dior Celsius, Chanel Coco Monsieur, Green Scottish Tweed...

LOL!

The scientist in me will buy Dior Celsius even if it smells exactly like Fahrenheit, and Dior Kelvin Absolute Zero - the freshest, coldest sport frag ever made, will have me camping outside the boutique!

LOL, brilliant.

I belive Cartier would have their sales and marketing department aiming their campaigning efforts towards the royal houses, where money is still extractable. First up, La baiser de la Grenouille.

Undoubtedly the latter!

I'm certain that the social media are heavily mined for ideas, tendencies, and trends, but the winds shift in completely different directions at high altitude, relative to what is happening down here. Things look much different when there is access to all the tools they undoubtedly have at their disposal.

Chanel wouldn't think of doing something like no. 5 Pour Homme unless their most brilliant fashion strategists thought it was a good idea. It's historic. It's colossal. You simply can't do something like that merely because a bunch of chumps like us think it would be cool. And if you do it, you do it right. No mistakes. You play for keeps, planning meticulously, to win every facet of the fight. It's an amazing challenge, IMO.

Good grief - the clothing equivalent of listening to Basenotes niche snobs on fragrance, would be doing leather hot pants with white lace suspenders as the next fashion rage for guys. Ummm - yeah - right. Maybe on Marc Jacobs, but it ain't happening at Macy's!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now you hit me with a low blow! No5 Black NO!!! Neither No5 Sport with the word "sport" in red. Chanel, you're better than that (at least on female's line)!!!
Red, you're so bad! You're making Ms. Coco Chanel roll into her grave!
