The clash of the modern classics

I've been thinking about modern classic fragrances and I'll probably end up purchasing one. Three post-millennial fragrances I see as worthy of the title "modern classic " are:
L'instant de Guerlan (possibly Extreme)
Yves Saint Laurent L'homme (possibly La Nuit)
Burberry touch.
Which fragrances do you see as deserving of the title "modern classic"?

out of the three listed i would say that L'instant is most worthy

Agree, although I like all three.

For me, modern classics will be:
Rive Gauche pour Homme by YSL
A*Men by Thierry Mugler
Dior Homme by Christian Dior

cheers

L'Homme may go down in history as a classic.
I doubt that Burberry Touch will, but anything's possible.

We will have to see which of these contemporary colognes will still sell in the 2020's.

I think One Million or Bulgari Aqua could be classics, but the early 2000's doesn't compete to the stuff that was released in the 90's.

Oh, and Angel Men, as well.

Une Fleur de Cassie by Frederic Malle
Aventus by Creed
Sycomore by Chanel

It'd definitely be LIDGE and not L'instant. I think La Nuit beats L'homme, and Burberry Touch is definitely not a modern classic (I think it's okay though). My three would be Terre d'Hermes, Dior Homme, and either Malt or Havane. I'd think about Burberry London as a maybe. It's great and unique, but one of the three best modern scents? Tough call.

Amouage Memoir
Amber Absolute
Tobacco Vanille

L'Instant. But Touch is one of my favorites.
Not on your list: Prada Infusion D'Homme, Rochas Man, Roadster.

I see roadster being a viable option for its bottle alone, it's a work of art.

Portrait of a Lady
Terre d'Hermes
L'Air du Desert Marocain

It really is. Have you ever seen the watch that inspired the bottle? One of my favorite ones:

Burberry Brit
Burberry London
Terre d'Hermes

Terre d'Hermes
LIDGE
Musc Ravageur
M7, unfortunately eviscerated in current formulations

Apart from the ones already mentioned so far: Ungaro III, so underrated, so stylish

I agree by default, although none of them appeal to me.

My three would be:

Terre d'Hermes
Portrait of a Lady
Cuiron

Definitely another vote for Dior Homme, and maybe, possibly, Burberry London.
L‘instant extreme for sure, different league.
Creed Windsor
I would say Rive Gauche is a old style done modern barbershop classic.

I should have done a poll, but that would be limited. From what I've counted, Basenotes' favorite modern classics are, in order:
L'instant de Guerlain; 4 mentions
L'instant de Guerlain Extreme; 3 mentions
Dior Homme; 3 mentions
Terre d'Hermès; 3 mentions
Angel men; 2 mentions.

Terre d`Hermes

Its hard to say because there are so many fragrances and so many manufacturers out there these days. I would agree that LIDGE and Terre D'Hermes seem to be well on their way.
LIDGE
TdH
Rive Gauche
Prada Amber PH

Looks like TDH is pulling ahead with five mentions and LIDG is following closely with four. Judging by the notes, I think my vote is for LIDG.

If we are including both 90s & 2000's, I'd say;
A*Men
One Million
Le Male
Acqua Di Gio
Chanel Allure Homme Sport
probably Armani Code would be considered one too, although I personally don't like it (I do like Sport Code though

I think Burberry Touch is way down the list of modern classics, I don't think it even finishes first in its own house behind London and Brit.

I agree on all of the above except for One Million (too soon to tell on that one) and would disagree on Code just given that it's not on the same tier I would say as the others listed

I disagree about Touch. It meets qualities I appreciate on many frags like Fahrenheit, Prada Amber PH, Arpège PH, Armani Code ...

Perhaps, but I think in order to be a classic you need a consensus of people who will allude to it as that. For instance, even those that dislike Fahrenheit will admit it's unbelievably unique and a very well-made scent, it just "isn't for me". I think that's what makes Fahrenheit a classic.

If you read through any number of reviews for Touch, you'll get people on both sides of the spectrum with many saying it's nothing special. Personally I have very mixed feelings towards it. I think that lack of universal regard makes it difficult to argue that Touch is a classic, even though you yourself may think of it very highly

At the very least though I think we can agree that Touch is far less worthy of the classic title than Burberry London

^^^ I agree to all you said, except for the London. Lol.

Creed Windsor and GIT, Chanel Egoiste.

Good point, very good point; but I think Touch is pleasant enough to avoid the fate of a fad. It may not end up a classic, but I think it's still got the potential to last. Only time will tell what passes its tests.

Guerlain Heritage.

(and Rive Gauche)

Exactaly! It's underrated cause it's a Burberry, a labeled (in a bad way) brand, unfortunetely.

I agree with Sidney_Falco that a classic is one that people would agree is a major accomplishemnt even if they don't really enjoy or like to wear it themselves. In that vein, I think two fragrances that I personally don't like very much - Terre d'Hermès and Dior Homme - have to be on the list, simply for the impact they've made and the huge amount of enthusiasm they've spawned. They're also sufficiently high in both quality and originality to keep them from falling into oblivion 5-10 years from now.
Third spot could be something I actually like: I'd vote for Sycomore, Encre Noire or Gucci PH-I (although the last one seems to have been either discontinued already or just disappeared from shelves - not a good thing if you want to be a classic!) Other strong contestants would be Rose 31 or Leather Oud.
