what is your top 5 for every newbie should try/sample...? i'm a newbie myself so i'm courious of your choices..

my list so far is as follows:

YSL Live Jazz
YSL Rive Gauche
Burberry London
Cartier Declaration Essence
Mugler Cologne

(haven't tried any niche frag. yet

This whole thread is gold - these are all classics you need to know, IMO. Don't need to like them, but if you can see why they stand out, you're way ahead in the game.

As everybody else has been saying, one should probably try classics in different styles, to get an idea. Excluding vintage (sorry Eau Sauvage, Diorissimo etc etc) and remaining in mainstream:

Knize Ten (traditional leather)
Azzaro pour homme (fougere)
Cristalle or Private Collection (green)
Shalimar (oriental)
Aromatics elixir or Aramis 900 (spices, balsamic, patchouli)
