I've come upon a little bit of money and I've been itching to try these fragrances. My question to you, basenoters, is which should I blind buy? They're both around the same price for 50ml.
These are 2 very powerful scents, with a lot of character and that are completely different. I don't care for Knize 10 so CdG Avignon wins in a walk.
avignon is nice, but no match for knize 10.

If you like leather go for Knize 10
If you like church incense go for Avignon...

I am a little tired of these "apples or oranges" threads...please, no offense meant. ;-)

in regard to your post: try a tester, and if you can't just order some samples.
I have both and love both. My recommendation: buy Knize 10 from Luckyscent and they will also send you a free sample of Avignon.

Comme des Garcons Incense: Avignon

Both are great within their genre, but I voted for Knize Ten because it seems to me much richer, deeper, and a must-have classic. Incidentally, I think the 100ml of Knize Ten is much more convenient, and I would go with that, despite the higher price.

I know these fragrances are completely different, guys! I'm fairly certain that I would absolutely adore both of them, but I'm not sure which I'd love more. That's where I'm drawing on the experience of others here to help guide me to which is a better value.

What do you mean by more convenient? Is the 50ml a splash?

Really, Avignon is a classic IMO...

I've gone and ordered Knize Ten. Thanks, everyone! You really helped me out. I can't wait!
I actually meant "cheaper". At luckyscent, the 50ml costs $70, the 125 costs 115, so per ml, the 50ml is about 50 percent more expensive. I don't know if the 50ml is splash or spray, I assume they're both spray - but even if, and I don't think so, that wouldn't be a problem because one can always transfer into a convenient atomizer.

I would buy both at some point.

Knize 10 for the leather, Avignon for the incense.
Two totally different fragrances as others have mentioned.
Both good, but K10 is far more distinctive. Unmistakable, really...whereas Avignon isn't radically different from several other incenses.
They're two of my all time favorites. Very hard choice considering how much they've been influential in their respective genre. You should probably get first Knize Ten (for no specific reasons) but IMO they're both well worth owning...(I can't believe I've been able to choose)...

Edit: Andylama is probably right when he says that Avignon is not anymore as distinctive as it used to be but, on the other hand, we could say the same thing about Knize 10 as well. This is because, they're both progenitors in their respective genre and they now count several clones consiting in micro-variations on the main theme.

Avignon -> Preludio D'Oriente, Full Incense, Josef Statkus EDP, Cardinal, Rock Crystal, MB03, Around Midnight...

Knize Ten -> Gomma, Xerjoff Homme, Cuir Mauresque, Cuir Fetiche

In this context, they're still terrific and surely among the most relevant examples of two popular genres.

Both excellent classics that are very different but are each well-deserving of purchase. I voted Avignon due to personal preferences, but it is really a toss-up.
Knize Ten. Avignon is great too but I find the scent of leather more versatile than that of a Catholic church.
Avignon, by far.
Wow, get both. Both classics IMO.

Although, based on your wardrobe, I'd suggest Knize with a couple of samples so you can test it out first.
I only suggest this because you seem to have many traditional classic fragrances and I'm assuming you enjoy most of them.

@ alfa - have you tested CM much? It's pretty different to Knize and actually shares notes with vintage BaV EdC once you get past the first couple hours.

I haven't updated my wardrobe here in a long time. It's really tedious!

It was your profile on Fragrantica that convinced me to buy Knize Ten.

I tried it several times and in the end I even quite like it (I actually don't exclude a full bottle at some point). IMO despite the differencies, I still find Cuir Mauresque to be somewhat a descedent of Knize Ten. I still have a sample somewhere, I'll give it a test with your perspective in mind. Thanks.

I hope you'll like it then, otherwise I'll be responsible for a wrong purchase

I agree. I was surprised when I first smelled it. The similarity struck me instantly...though I actually prefer the shockingly weird petrol note in the topnote of K10.
I haven't smelt Avignon but have just spritzed some Knize Ten Gold Edition on from a sample and am probably going to be buying a bottle very soon. If the original is like this, I'd go for that.
K10 Golden Edition is not very different from the original. It's more of a subtle rebalancing than a flanker. They are both equally good, and if you have one, you don't really need the other.
I like both but if I only could have one, it would be Avignon

I much prefer the Golden Edition because the petrol note is turned way down letting more florals shine through. It dumbs it down just a little bit.

After recently testing several leather fragrances I prefer the leather note in the Knize line over anything else. It reminds me of what the current Bel Ami by Hermes could be if it was made better. Minus the weird petrol note of course.

Golden Edition works just fine for me.
I noticed that the leather accord in Golden Edition is a bit different, sharper--more similar to the leather in Piguet's Bandit.

I have and like both versions.

ok, now you can get Avignon as well I'm an enabler

Both are very distinctive for sure, but I think Avignon is MUCH better for 2012.

Basically if you want something dark and mysterious, go for CdG Avignon. If you want to step back in time to the 1970's, open up your shirt and splash on the K10!

I totally agree with this description and assessment of the two. Both are excellent but Avignon is much more enjoyable to wear - at least for me. I own both and have used only about 5 ml. of Knize Ten in ten years. Still I love it and respect its old world leathery character - no compromises with K10. Avignon on the other hand has been used repeatedly and I just ordered my third bottle - so proof to me is in what gets worn and enjoyed most. Avignon!
