A Fragrance Story for Today...

I just got home from work. I had an interesting experience that I had to share here.

Before work, I was trying to decide what my SOTD would be-- it was down to Terre D'Hermes Parfum or Aventus. I sniffed the bottles of each and went back and forth before deciding on Aventus.

Later at work, it was around 2PM and as I was walking around, I smelled something very faintly--something familiar. I picked up some grapefruit and orange and vetiver... it was barely perceptible, but inside my head I kept hearing a voice saying "That's Terre D'Hermes... somebody's wearing Terre D'Hermes... that guy is wearing Terre D'Hermes..."

So I went over to the guy who was sitting in the area where I was picking up the aroma-- he was eating a salad-- and with a bit of hesitation I asked, "I know this is going to sound like a weird question, but are you wearing cologne?"

He looked at me a little oddly and then politely said, "No. I'm not." He had an accent like he was from somewhere in Europe, but I wasn't sure where.

So then I tried to smooth it over by saying that I thought I smelled something nice, and was just trying to figure out what it was.

Then he put his fork down and squinted a little and said, "Well, I WAS wearing cologne early this morning about 7 hours ago, but I've had a shower since and it's not there anymore".

"Aha!" I thought to myself. "So, what fragrance was it that you were wearing this morning?" I asked.

"It's something from Hermes" he replied.

"Ahh, I KNEW it. It's Terre D'Hermes. You're wearing Terre D'Hermes and I'm guessing that you're wearing the concentrated parfum version. Am I right?"

"Yes! Exactly. Wow. How did you know that?!?" He was simply stunned. I then had to explain that I'm a DIY perfumer and I study things like that. I also told him that I'd almost worn the exact same fragrance this morning-- which from a wardrobe of nearly 300 would have been quite a coincidence.

Weird. Also a year ago I called out someone wearing Terre D'Hermes. This fragrance really lasts and lasts, and it has such an identifiable signature. Today was like deja vu all over again!

That is quite a nose you have. Are you interested in a swap by any chance?
I will throw in a finger of your choice!

I have yet to pick up a scent on someone correctly, but when I do I have a feeling it's going to be pretty sweet

Wow. Terror d'Hermès.

I would call you the Perfume Whisperer except that I already named someone else that on Facebook. I took a picture of an unlabelled bottlel that I had received at Bergdorfs (they decant into 3ml bottles that the labels easily fall off of) and posted it to a FB group with the announcement that I was going to Bergdorfs, and I was going to find out what it was. Then I smelled it and left the comment, "Nevermind, it's some wan citrusy thing that I don't even care to know the name of." He replied, "Azure Lime." He was correct.

Your nose is amazing though. And you smelled it over salad dressing no less.

It indeed has an unmistakable smell. The parfum is light years better than the EDT. I am so happy I can finally say this and those who have known this, all I can say is, you're right.

Great story Indie. Thanks for sharing. I'm yet to try the parfum.

Great story, Indie! I had an experience like this. We were with one of our dogs at the veterinarian's and heading to the exit door.

My head turned at a familiar scent and I stopped dead in my tracks, asking the woman we passed, "Are you wearing Azuree?" The woman's face lit up and she smiled. "Why, yes!" she replied.

As my dog was pulling me to the door, eager to go home, I said to the woman, "I'd recognise that scent anywhere! It's a classic!"

I wish I had the knack for zeroing in on a scent as you do!

Amazing job! Now its time to start training my nose too

Good story IG, you must have a great nose. I'm still at the "I know that scent but can't be sure what it is" stage.

That's a wonderful story Indie !

I mostly pick up powdery/woody frags, but once in a while I detect some "old school" feminines.

That's awesome. I've come to find that many scents which smell different in the bottle can smell similar on skin when worn by random people; it really takes a little bit more for a particular fragrance to stand on its own and be so unmistakeable anywhere and everywhere. I think that's why Thierry Mugler's Angel is one of the most successful fragrances ever made. Same goes for Shalimar and Chanel No.5.

Back to the subject of Terre D'Hermes-- I remember when it was first released back in 2006, it was panned pretty hard by some segments of Basenotes as smelling "generic" and "like lemon dishwashing soap". I think it's really becoming a real bonafide mens' classic. It's not as popular as some fragrances, but from my conversations with novices who wear Terre D'Hermes as their signature scent-- they're pretty enthusiastic about it in terms of it being something they will continue to buy as their bottles run dry. Great stuff and it really stands out in the fragrance world and also the real world.

My favorite story along these lines was when I picked out a fellow grad student wearing Burberry Touch even though I had never smelled Touch before. I was just going by my memory of reading Touch's notes pyramid a few months earlier.

I`m glad to hear the EDP version lasts on some people, because on my skin it doesn`t last and project AT ALL :-(

This is an interesting story. Having used the Parfum version for quite a while I have to say that the smell may have entered some subconscious mental regions in me - I'm not this aware of it anymore when wearing it. Your story shows once more Terre's durability and its stand-out-character. Wonderful to know.

Great story! I had no idea TdH could be so tenacious. I'll have to try wearing it again.

I have never tried one singel Montale fragrance in my whole life, so I`m sorry but you must be wrong :-)

A very nice tale and kudos to your bloodhound nose lol

Man, I love when people talk to other people about what fragrance they're wearing! I'd love the Spanish to be a bit more extroverted in that sense...
Lately I seem to smell Alien on a lot of girls, not sure if its scent has burnt a mark on my nostrils since I wore it last time, or if it really is getting that popular!

Is the EDT also tenacious or is it just the parfum?

The Iso E Super must be giving me nose fatigue.

Great story Indie_Guy, your stories always interest me.

I smell TdH on guys a lot here in S. Florida, not sure why. It seems like I'm always catching a whiff of it, here-and-there.

Me too! Just tonight there was a girl sitting at my bar wearing Alien. I don't know that it is, but it seems like very woman I encounter is wearing either Alien or Angel. Thierry Mugler really seems to capture women and get them to wear these fragrances. I have to say that I wasn't a huge fan of Alien at first, but I like it now quite a bit. I've probably asked about 10 or more women what they were wearing in the past two years and the answer was Alien.

Thanks for the reminder! It's on my wishlist, so I guess I should pull the trigger. Good nose!

Well, I have a little story, maybe not as impressive. But anyway...I was on this bus with some friends...we stop to get a soda or something. Some stayed in the bus, including my husband. I went in the store. Someone randomly gets out some cologne and was thinking to apply it. Then my husband says, 'spray it, she will be able to guess what it is.' So, I come out of the store and before I get on the bus..I noticed someone has sprayed cologne. So, I get on the bus and say, wow, someone just sprayed some cologne. Everyone on the bus was like..well, what is it? I said, that's Fierce by Abercrombie and I pointed to who was wearing it and said, you put that on, right? As I noticed the smell was coming from the back of the bus. They were all like, 'are you serious?!'. I was like, ya, I smelled it from outside. Not really impressive as A&F totally drowns their store with that stuff. And he had just sprayed it. But I really hadn't smelled it in a few years as I don't shop there. But ya, nonetheless.

I have noticed someone wearing Poison the other day, and I have picked up Coco M..but those are really distinctive scents. Someone else was wearing Love and Luck but I have Love and Luck. I have also picked up Dior Addict.

Hey hey Indie!

Cool story. I'm going to have to check out TdH.

SixCats!

I think it's pretty impressive.

I'd love to be able to do that. So far I've only been able to call Allure Ed Blanche. I know, it doesn't take genius - about 15 decibels louder than either of the TdHs.
