Comme Des Garçons: Amazingreen! A new fragrance!

From the BN "News section"

Cult perfume house and fashion brand, Comme des Garçons, is to launch a new perfume, Amazingreen, on the 3rd of July. The perfume, unveiled to the press in London yesterday contains a mix of green, vegetal notes and mineral notes that include flint and gunpowder.

Speaking in Londons Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green, in a grandly panelled room with a vast back-drop wall specially decorated in green, and a pile of bottles, tossed gallery-style on the floor, perfumer Jean Christophe Herault said through an interpreter: It was important for me to express the strength of nature, in particular the jungle. I didnt want this to be a twee interpretation of green. I wanted this to be the apogee of green.

Jean Christophe Herault said he was asked by the company to come up with a green scent, but didnt want to go for the obvious.

"What I was trying to avoid was using the main ingredients used in green perfumes like galbanum, which is so often used in womens perfumes. I also wanted a departure from using citrus at the top to achieve a fresh and green note. Instead its quite original the way Amazingreen has been created, the choice of ingredients are quite singular or distinctive."

The vegetal, green accord is described as a kaleidoscope by the perfumer who says that the traditional fragrance pyramid does not apply to this creation. This is a more binary creation he says, the vegetal and the mineral running side by side.

Amongst the singular green notes which the perfumer pointed out in Amazingreen was ivy leaf, which he pointed out was at once familiar and comforting to people. The smell of ivy reminds me of my childhood in Normandy, it has quite a strong emotional attachment, but its also a common smell that people will find recognisable. Its got a bit of a crunchy and crisp smell, an energetic smell running through its veins.

Green Pepper was also used, which although spicy, does have a recognisable vegetal note to it: Its often called the cold spice because you have the contrast between something sensual and something cold, says Herault.

Under the mineral accord, the perfumer included his recreation of the smell of silex, the latin word for ground flint stone.

The explosive accord includes vetiver, smoke and a recreation of the smell of gunpowder. The gunpowder adds a rebellious and illicit presence he says, the vetiver brings refinement and elegance.

Asked if such unusual notes created a problem as far as IFRA guidelines were concerned, the perfumer said: Its a game. All you need is your imagination to get round the regulations and create what you want to create, though he added of course we respect IFRA rules which protect the consumer.

Amazingreen was commissioned by the Comme des Garçons (who have a licensing agreement with Spanish perfume House Puig) and Jean Christophe Herault says he worked very closely with the marketing department to develop the perfume. It is likely that this latest addition will sit with the more mainstream, yet interesting, end of the Comme des Garçons stable. The perfume is unisex.

Amazingreen will be available exclusively through Selfridges in the UK from the 3rd of July and then through selected outlets on the 3rd of August including escentual.com, Harrods and Harvey Nichols.

No details on US as yet, but will update if we hear.

Of course. I'm so glad that the EU is caring for the population.
Ridiculous.
I'm thankful for the perfumer's sarcasm. And looking forward to try Amazingreen.
Green is always good.

Is the bottle slightly green-ish, I can't tell from the picture above?

Bottle looks great. Can't wait to try!

After releasing that "A New Perfume" with the industrial glue and scotch tape note, trust CdG to release something like this. I like it!

However...what does gunpowder smell like?

Can I have some more?

Mmmm, this sounds great. I'm picturing something like French Lover + Terre d'Hermes.
I'm in!!! This sounds fantastic as its no secret that I love green fragrances!!! Thanks for the info!!
Interesting, but I am not sure about the green pepper. Its the kind of note my nose homes in on, and it might distract from the rest of the show. Worth a try though.
Like others here, I suspect some sort of variation on French Lover (not too keen on over-peppered scents, though) but will definitely sample. Interesting.

I'm thinking Dior Granville + TdH? OR maybe Trefle Pur + Acier Aluminum. It sounds kind of unique actually. I can't wait to try it out.
I absolutley love green scents.
This sounds really good.

I WANT IT NOW!

LOL! I didn't have my glasses on, and I thought you were showing a picture of some smokeless powder in response to the question of "What does gunpowder smell like?"!!!

Sounds nice. I hope it's not a green Wonderwood though.

that's exactly my main concern.

3rd July it is then Though I will probably wait till 3rd August and get it from Escentual if I really want to.
I too am concerned about the green pepper note mentioned by Herault. I have had that accord ruin a fragrance a few times (it annoyingly pops up in L'Artisan's Piment Brulant and ever-so-often I catch a whiff of it in Zagorsk by CdG).

The gunpowder note sounds lovely. I smell gunpowder in Serge Noire by Serge Lutens and Essence of John Galliano by Diptyque - which only serves to enhance those fragrances.
Sounds test-worthy but I'm not a fan of ivy. No memories of a childhood in Normandy for me; rather, annual battles over custody of a long fence.

Those were the two fragrances I imagined to. but I imagine the texture will be less sheer plastic than either one of those due to the Orris Root and smoke. I predict a more Amouage texture. Like Amouage Memoir was thrown in with those two.
TdH + French Lover sounds about right. In other words, IES overload.

I'm hoping that's not the case, as gunpowder as a note is an awesome concept - I've just never smelled it executed well.
When I think gunpowder I think of the awesome smell I get after shooting a shotgun while dove hunting. The empty shells and post shot smell is awesome. That or the smell of the capguns. Either way if done right, I think it could be great! the only time I smelled anything close to a good gunpowder note it was in Halston Man Amber where it had a firecracker type smell in it.
airborne and wonderwood didn't do much for me, and parts of the description makes me drop my expectations severely.
still, it's a comme des garçons, and I'll have to sample it.
This fragrance sounds amazing.

I love the smell of gunpowder-- maybe not so much when it hangs in the air following the sound of some low IQ hoodlum popping off shots abruptly in my neighborhood at 3AM... But I love that aroma when it accompanies taking my trusty Walther pistol to the range.

I love green pepper as well.

I'm not a big fan of the ovaloid CdG bottles-- but I'll definitely check this out when it becomes available.
Sounds a bit like Lancome's L'Aquatonic which is a fabulous fragrance with a beautiful green pepper note. I'm intrigued.

I agree, the recent launches have been forgettable, or in the case of "A New Perfume", unforgettable for all the wrong reasons! But I always come back to CdG, I have decants of Red, Green and Black coming, and everything new they put out is a must-try for me.

Ha ha! I'm glad you (still?) like it. Wearing it was such a What the hell were they thinking?-experience, but I'll be polite and say that at least it wasn't boring

Of course I do and I also strongly believe it ranks together with the top notches from the house.

I gotta agree with alfarom there - EDP 2011 is my favourite release from the line. It's so addictive I love it.

Sounds like it could be fun. So far the CdG house hasn't thrilled my nose enough to purchase a bottle.

Cdg in general just tries to be too trendy for me. I'll overlook the trendy part if it smells good.

They're probably among the very few that don't try to be trendy...they are. That's VERY deifferent

i've thought that too. Most other brands new releases are aspiring to be on-trend, but CdG is usually something aspiring to be ahead of its time or trend-setting.

Trying Amazingreen now and, with my biggest disappointment, I've to report that it SUCKS! Being myself a CDG freak I will surely give it a couple more wearings before coming with my final virdict but, so far, the fragrance is extremely underwhelming. French Lover? Naaaaaa, TdH? (thanks god) naaa...

The fragrance strikes as incredibly safe and modern (in the uninspiring and uninteresting meaning of the words), green and kinda watery with loads of woody amber. Peppery and fizzy with a huge dose of calone. Guys, I'm so sorry, but this is an EPIC FAIL!

It seems like CDG is traying to desperately go mainstream, which to me means everything but good news...

Forgot to add...it strongly reminds me of something else. A popular mainstream release which I can't actually put my finger on....scrub time.
