Zino Davidoff vintage

I am trying to track down a vintage bottle of Zino Davidoff, however everyone seems to be selling the new version (the one with the bold typeface on the word DAVIDOFF)

Anyway, a company called cosmetics now, are selling the old version, or should I say they are advertising it with a picture of the vintage formula box, I have just emailed them asking if it is the older one, here is the reply:

Hey Russell,

Our product expert indicated that it was the same formulation.

I don't know the details of the product myself but sometimes through sourcing overseas the product may be the same with different packaging for a different market.

I have re-enquired with our product expert to confirm that the change in packaging was not also accompanied by a change in formulation.

Thanks for you patience.

Sincerely

What do you guys think???

A lot of sites like to put the original packaging in the ads but send you the new formulation. Check ebay too, Ive seen some vintage bottles on there. Both formulation are nice though.

I belive, the original lasts longer on the skin, which is an issue for me, hardly any frag last more than 2-3hrs on my skin, regardless of the cost of it

Only have the first one that came out on the market. Was not even aware that the scent had changed.

Hmmm. First Michael Kors and now Zino. I can start to see your tastes here Russell. Nice.
I don't believe for a minute what an SA tells me or some of these reps - they're clueless. Of course, there is always the rare exception.

I know what you`re saying, most are hopeless, anyway, I did order one from someone on eBay, at a very good price, it is the new version, but it smells delightful, dont know how long it`s going to last, had it on about an hour or so and it`s still quite potent, so fingers crossed it can go for at least 4-5 hrs, I would be happy with that

If you like Michael Kors and Zino I'd also recommend, in that same mold...

Guerlain Heritage
PdN New York
Tiffany for Men
Bois du Portugal
Patou pour Homme

Thanks for that, quite fancy Guerlain Heritage in an EDP, have you tried it?
Yes, I preferred the vintage or first reformulation EDT (although even the most recent incarnation is good)
I didn't like the civet in the EDP - just too heavy.

Also, I'd add Vintage Santos by Cartier to the list.
I'd have no problem blind buying PdN New York.

I tested a "vintage" bottle. Exactly the same as the new bottle. Why does change in font on the bottle equal reformulation? Where did this idea come from?
Nope, very different. The incense/sandalwood type note is nowhere to be found in the new version.

News to me as well. I picked up a large back-up bottle recently on Ebay and compared it to the one I bought 5 years ago and it's the same juice.

I get a very strong incense/sandalwood drydown.
This is my bottle.

Same as mine, so no difference in juice, just different font???

I saved a sample from that style bottle and I was able to locate it (not always easy! LOL). I applied it more than half an hour ago, and all there is here is a fizzy cedar type wood (and it's not especially strong). It has nothing like the powerful incense/sandalwood of the other style bottle. To me this is the difference between great and not worth thinking about. Also, there is nothing to counterbalance the neroli/floral/lavender quality; I need the strong incense/sandalwood to make that bearable. I've found a similar situation with Lapidus Pour Homme (1987) recently. Another thing is that the vintage ones seem to dry out over time, creating more note separation and insuring against the possibility that the frag will become cloying (as is so often the case with these reformulated vintage frags). Monkeybars has a decant from this same bottle (as my sample) so perhaps he can chime in here too. And obviously it's possible that some of the new style bottles have the original fragrance in them.

Yep Bigsly sent me an ounce of this lovely juice. I haven't tried the new juice however, so I can't speak to any comparison discussion. I figured the chances of my liking a reformulation more than the original are pretty slim. Though it has happened before (Bel Ami e.g.).

(Vintage) Zino is my "chilling at home" scent lately. Good thing I have 2 bottles.

It could very well have been reformulated sometime in the last few/several years, but why does a change in the script on the bottle automatically equal vintage/not vintage?
I really love the juice that I have and i have found in the past that getting a vintage version doesnt really increase my enjoyment so I usually dont bother.

That seems to be the "collective experience" of BNers, including myself. Sure, there may be some overlap with the bottle design, but I certainly would not take the chance, because the one from the bottle you have I found to be unwearable. So, that's a terrible risk/reward ratio (plus I have enough of the "good stuff").
I just got a 1 ounce of the new bottle and I Can smell incense and sandalwood, I've never smelled it before so I can't tell you if there is a difference just what I smell

Changes in bottles often do indicate reformulation - frags are made in batches and are matched in smell to reference samples by perfumers. This has to be done on each batch because ingredients vary, both natural and synthetic. Every time a new batch is made, there will be slight changes or big changes in materials to compensate for. Also, the current expense of the materials in the formula will be taken into account - expensive ingredients will be reduced and or replaced. The perfumers in the producer company may just be given cheaper ingredients to work with and expected to recreate the fragrance. The company commissioning the work from the producer will often not even be informed when this happens.
A new bottle is used for a new batch as the old batch will be all bottled, not hanging around in a vat.
The reference samples are changed periodically too - so its easy to see how the quality of a frag can deteriorate over time - especially when naturals become more and more expensive.

I just bought this version at TJ Maxx and it is OUTSTANDING! I bought the 4.2 oz for $39.99. 1 small spray on my forearm to test is producing great sillage. Really enjoying this classic....glad I bumped into it.

Wish the discount stores around me had anything good at all. But they never, ever do.

I actually bought this at a TJ Maxx located 4 hours from me. I was there for a conference. I have made two excellent purchases lately at discount stores: Cartier Declaration and now Zino.
