Santal Majuscule by Serge Lutens

Thread Starter
I was quite surprised to find an announcement-mail of the brand new Santal Majuscule (~ "Sandalwood in capitals") in my inbox today. Apparently it's available as a black label-atomizer now. To be honest I never even heared of this before. A quick lookup revealed that it made some news already and that there's even a BN-database entry for it - unsurprisingly with no reviews so far. Allegedly this fragrance is meant to be a study of Indian sandalwood (http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.de/201...scule-new.html).

So, I wonder if anybody got a chance to sniff it already?
I was wondering the same thing. I will be curious about this one.
I talked about this with Hedonist a few days ago but appearantly he hasn't tried it yet either....

LOL @ Kojak
Also waiting for some opinions.
I was also surprised by the email. Never heard of it. Could SL ever top Santal de Mysore?
I also got the email and got very excited that its not a Paris exclusive. After the last few mediocre (as per SL level) releases, I have high hopes that this will retain the SL name.
It's been discussed here:

http://www.basenotes.net/threads/299...2!-Any-guesses

Apparently it is sandalwood and rose. ONE MORE sandalwood! LOL
post #8 of 124
Since Santal Blanc is as far as I can go with wood. I'm not particularly excited about this one
post #9 of 124
I'm not too excited about this one, I'll be sure to give it a try though - I'm much more excited about the upcoming gardenia
post #10 of 124
I'm looking froward to trying it, but I haven't been too impressed by Santal Blanc and Santal de Mysore.
Dont they used to sent samples of new releases?
Yes they do. I am expecting one in a few weeks offering a sample.
Wow!! Sandalwood + rose!! I can't wait!!!
Santal de Mysore is good once you get past the first 2 hours, which smells like an Indian Lunch Buffet. Its a complex scent, I wonder how Majascule will smell, I am sure there will be some twists in it.

Sounds like this may be a sweetened up version of Lorenzo Villoresi Sandalo. We'll see!

Did they sent you an invitation to receive the sample?
Or did you ask them for one?
Thank you!

The official compo:

Composition olfactive.

Since I can't read French I Google translated this...

_________________________________

Olfactory composition. Complex writing is valuable as an illumination, around three components:

- Sandalwood, a sacred wood and precious

- Cocoa, sweet and bitter

- Damask Rose, fresh and peppery

Sandalwood Shift: Caused by the bite of fresh peppermint and Rose of Damascus, reflects the sweet bitterness of a childhood memory through the Cocoa Absolute.

Medieval legends recounted in valuable books ...

Illuminations and spicy creamy dressing for a majestic Sandalwood.

Name: Sandalwood: The Sacred Wood / Shift: The Rare Illuminations.

Sorry i though it wasnt too hard to translate the note as santal is still santal, rose still rose and cacao is only cocoa

Thanks for the info, Mon-Petit.

Yes but as you know, most Americans are really stupid with other languages and most do not know French. I could understand many of the words relating to the ingredients but had no idea about parts like "Légendes moyenâgeuses contées dans de précieux livres…"

No offense intended!
I think Sandalwood Shift is an interesting name after translation.

The notes do sound very interesting, and I am looking forward to the release!

LOL. Maybe "Capital Letter Sandalwood" is more appropriate.
Cocoa and rose + sandalwood... Hmmmm, interesting.

No irony in my remark and you are absolutely right the rest of the text is hard to translate and Lutens loves to play
with words so it's even harder to translate

Sandalwood+rose+cacao=something I really want to sniff!
If this contains lots of natural sandalwood rather than generic synths and the cocoa note of borneo and the rose of Sa majesté, all breought together well, it could be the best relase in a long time. It certainly sounds better thanb most of the recent ones and is a must-smell for me.
Did i miss the part where it said who the nose was?

this sounds really sensual.....
Knit, I've read it is Christopher Sheldrake.
The nose is Serge Lutens

The majority of the first feedbacks said similarities with Jeux de peau and Santal blanc for the sandalwood note
post #32 of 124
I don't really have high hopes much these days, but maybe they'll surprise us?

I think it'd compliment the cocoa in borneo 1834 very nicely.

I am on the mail list and get emails about new releases. They email and offer the sample, you have to go to the site via a link and fill in your details. Usually takes two weeks for a sample to arrive in Ireland.

Oh mannn is someone gonna sniff this soon?!! :') desperate

Can't wait to smell this...
There is a bottle of this on E Bay.
I have it on skin.
The starting is very similar to Jeux de peau imo, the santal is proeminent.
Now i have a little more rose but it's subtle.
Maybe if you found JdP "too much" but appreciate the santal base with a hint of rose you'll like it.
But i still think that JdP haters will not like it ^^

It's just my first impression on hot weather, so i have to explore it much. For now (as i have and love JdP) i not plan to purchase it.
Yes bottle on ebay at £102 and still over 24 hours to go.
I'm in Paris and I tried it today at the Palais Royal. Didn't try it on my skin, but they gave me a sample with my purchase

Definitely a strong rose note, very clean, with the cocoa subdued. The sandalwood isn't nearly as pervasive as in Santal de Mysore, but is quite sharp and matches the rose. I'd imagine the cocoa comes out in the base, but no way to tell on a card.
I had a chance to sniff it at the SF Sniff. First impression: Lovely warm sandalwood and rose. May be too much chocolate for me; not sure from just one sniff!

Mon-Petit, that ad is gorgeous!
I just smelt it today at Barney's in San Francisco. It is surprisingly different on paper and skin; on the former, it is all salycilates that refuse to dry out- but on skin, it open like a classic attar- strong- almost BO like darkness, from which unfurls a very dark (and undoubtedly lovely) rose. The suppposed cocoa comes off more as patch on my skin- giving the whole thing a very retro arabian attar feel. Not a pale, creamy rosy sandalwood- but dark, woody rose. Good- but hasn't Amouage done this already?
The ebay bottle sold for £122!!!!! It will be released in the UK at the end of July at £83!!! Going to wait to try it first. Have to say liking the sound of it from the reviews above.
I tried it too along with Sarrasins, La Myrrhe and Iris Silver Mist at the Palais Royal yesterday. Totally different from the other three, as you would expect. It's quite fresh and peppery at the start then smoothes out into a very warm, rich dry down. Moreish (and Moorish, given the roses are Moroccan!). It smelled equally good on my husband. And for the record, I bought it.

Killer first post, mrs. room

Still looking forward to giving this one a shot.

Sounds divine. Thanks for sharing.

Not yet...
When L'eau froide was released I received a sample. I hope to receive also this new one...
Tried this today - disappointed.
To be fair - I didn't try it on skin. But on card, it opens in similar sweet sandalwoody style as Jeux De Peau - extremely similar. So where Jeux De Peau turns into an apricot and liqourice sandalwood, there is a rose under Santal Majascule, and the cocoa is very subtle. To be honest, it smells like nothing new in the Lutens' line up, I hope to hell is upcoming gardenia is wonderful!
No offers of samples as yet. Usually are by now. My friend who works for Kenneth Greene and sells Lutens said it should be with her in House of Fraser early August. Its officially released in the UK end of July.
Nooooooo, had so much promise, sounds iffy now.

It's in Harrods now. And they had a sneaky bottle behind the Lutens counter at Harvey Nichols (who said they'll be getting it in properly along with samples on Monday).
A so Harrods and Harvey Nichols must be getting the first exclusive for a few weeks.
