Santal Majuscule by Serge Lutens - Page 2

It's Jeux de Peau "deux", but I like it.
Okay, the sample emails should be coming next week. The facebook page is saying make sure you are on the mailing list to receive a sample.

- - - Updated - - -

I received the email today asking if I would like a 1ml sample.
I tried this in Paris last week - on the same day the mercury hit 36. Not the best conditions for sniffing, but they still hadn't received any samples.
It would be unfair to even attempt a proper review, but I got an impression of a very dense (Australian) sandalwood / sweetish rose / winter spice with serious longevity and sillage. In the heat, this was beyond cloying.
Why on earth Uncle Serge chose to launch this in the middle of Summer is beyond me.
I will look to revisit this one, but much later on in the year.

I thought I was on the email list but I'm not, and now I can't find how you do so. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd love to smell like sandalwood, rose, and spices, and I don't care how hot it is outside! Neither of the other SL sandalwood offerings are quite for me. I'm hopeful about this one.

This one is mine!!!

But they won't send samples outside Europe/UK.

Been testing a few days and I'm conflicted over this release. It might as well be a flanker to Jeux de Peau, odd to see Serge operating in this manner. I still can't decide how I feel about it. On one side I find it interesting, involving elements of Jeux de Peau, Praline de Santal and Idole de Lubin to create a kind of sleek saffron and rose theme. It is a little sharp and not really the "warm"/wintry fragrance that things like Fumerie, Chergui and Santal de Mysore are. There is something slightly aldehydic about it, recalling La Myrrhe and, to a lesser extent, Cuir Mauresque.

Lasting power and sillage are both massive, one of the most nuclear SLs ever made. Dare I say the slightest hints of a headache threatened to appear. The two sprays on my forearm from 18 hours ago are still going surprisingly strong (and this late stage is pretty much the only time you'll spot the sandalwood in this one).

I can see myself growing to like it more but it's hard to get excited over a scent that shares so much of a resemblance to Jeux de Peau, which I wore quite a bit of when it first came out. I definitely like it more than JdP, its richer, less feminine and has some very nice complexities in the opening stages.
Wore this yesterday, for the first time, and I struggled with it for hours. There is something in it that bothers me (patchouli? rose? plum?) and the irritating note never disappeared. I am going to wear it several more times, but for now it is definitely NOT love-at-first smell.

It definitely smells Middle-Eastern, that's for sure.
mike: I get the exact same irritation from this. I've worn it as my SOTD the last couple days and each time I get slight headaches. I want to like it, I could see almost liking it, but the irritation never goes away. It annoys my nose and I sometimes turn away from my own chest to get a breath of fresh air.. never good. It's the first SL I've come across that truly feels imbalanced. I'm just realizing that it's been a long time since I've liked a new SL release, sadly.

That is not encouraging...at all : /

I don't like it much. Too cakey for my tastes. May be worth re-trying nearer Christmas.

Interesting, I also got a headache the first time I tried it, the next time I was more careful with the sprayer! It's very dense and sweet and fits well with other gourmands in the line, but it offers little new. The sandalwood has a rasp to it, I was hoping for something more creamy, and ultimately the sweet notes (plum? dates?) dominate the scent to such a degree that it feels monotonous.

Exactly, they should have released this in february and l'eau froide now. I'll reconsider it in autumn too.

I consider the perfume as a flanker of JdP, an interesting different variation on the same santal, as the "bois serie" with cedar.

I can't wait for Une voix noire, i think it's gonna be a great release.
Tried this in Harvey Nichols in Manchester earlier today, way too overpowering at the beginning but once it started to wear down it was alright. Not enough to entice me for a FB though at this point of time. Especially when the weather is starting to heat up lately here.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets irritated by this one.

I wore a tiny amount, very late last night (I had insomnia, which is rare for me). When you first spray it on, it's quite delicious and it **does** smell very much like Indian sandalwood...for just a few seconds. But when the floral sweetness arrives it clobers that wonderful cocoa/sandalwood and it seems like that's ALL I SMELL afterwards. The rose/fruit never really fade. And as a fan of many rose notes and fragrances I am surprised that I find this one so irritating, but IMO the rose note feels very badly done and as furrypine pointed out above 'raspy'.
I agree. It's interesting for a one-time experience but this is not really the type of fragrance that I could imagine ever wanting to wear again. I agree about the dominant note being "raspy" or shrill.. it turns unpleasant quickly, and then it grates on you. I scrubbed extra hard in the shower to get this one off.

It can't be that bad!
I'll be in Paris soon and I'll buy it!

It looks like it´s my kind of perfume

Although it's been well over a month now, I still haven't received a sample of Santal Majuscule yet. Anyone else still waiting?
No sample came my way either. On MUA, quite a few asking if anyone got their sample? Answer was no.

I got samples in store in the end. I like the opening, the middle but there is a note in the final dry down which just annoys me. Strangely it settles down then comes forward and settles down again and again. I get the same note in Jeux hence I did not buy it.
You are right. I have forgotten about it, but yep, no sample either. Not even with my recent back-up purchase of Fourreau Noir.
Tried this at the Perfume Shoppe here in Vancouver: LOVE IT.

I could try to break it down, but I'd describe it as though you're drinking a honeyed rose lassi topped with cocoa powder and wearing Australian sandalwood oil neat, on a fiercely hot, slightly dusty summer day. It's curiously lactic, even yogurty, the sandalwood is astringent rather than sweet, but the rose and cocoa sweeten it up considerably.

My favorite Lutens since Fille En Aiguilles, and my favorite of his three sandalwoods ( as good as de Mysore is, this just contains more ).

Smells much more Indian than Middle Eastern in vibe to me. I don't get Jeux de Peau out of this, other than them both being very thick, creamy orientals.
'Yogurty' is a good description Sugandaraja. This element is slightly intriguing, it's that aforementioned 'musky/floral/sweetness' that bothers me.

Does anybody received the sample?
I dont get it after the email offerind the sample!

I enjoy this composition a lot, but I fear this sample fake-out may be turning some potential fans off it.

@etoile: I still haven't received a sample yet.
No sample for me, I have gotten them before with out a problem. Usually takes 2/3 weeks after the email.

I do get the Jeux de Peau link, its the sandalwood he is using. On my skin half way through dry down I get a blast of sandalwood which just makes me think JdP.

Me neither. And I received the e-mail on 2 August. It's been some time...
Still hoping that it did not get lost on it's way to me.

Since so many people haven't received it and no reports of people who did, I'm sure it's not lost in the post. My personal guess would be that SL ran into a problem with manufacturing of their samples. I think there's still a chance that they'll show up someday. There are no pics or offers of sample vials to be found either, so far.
I got my samples in House of Fraser Belfast. They had two or three packs, so looks like they might be sending them out to the stores first.
This is why I prefer to pay 5 bucks for a sample rather than wait 3 months for the possibility of a freebie. Unfortunately it's not that great of a fragrance anyways.

Ha! Actually received mine today! Testing in progress... (5 minutes into it: yes, a jeux de peau vibe but better, less gimmicky, more unisex).
Ah... thanks Nasenmann! So, there is hope this shows up at my end, too. Look forward to trying it and my Une Voix Noire decant, which should arrive in a couple of days.

- - - Updated - - -

Mine is here now as well and I sampled it last night. For the first 2-3 hours I found it loud, rather screechy and synthetic for my taste. I got less 'milkiness' or rose than expected (given others' reviews). However, I have to admit that the drydown (after the three hours' mark) was rather nice and intriguing. It's an 'okay' fragrance for me, but I think I have said it before (when I first smelled the Vitriol) - I have a feeling that Serge is imitating Amouage's successful style. To me it feels more like something from their house or maybe Pierre Guillaume than unmistakeably Serge Lutens. Awaiting my decant of Une Voix Noire now.
Got my samples today. I actually got TWO of them, in separate packages . Have just tried for a couple of minutes and it's quite nice, but a bit on the feminine side - isn't it?
I like it very much, it's a more elegant and interesting version of Jeux de Peau, but the longevity is disappointing. I wished the cocoa and rose notes lasted longer.
I have made a comparaison Jeux de peau vs SM today , one on each wrist...
I totally agree it's more elegant, "chic", sophisticated than JdP, i detected the rose more than my first try anyway i can't stop smelling my JdP wrist and my verdict is : i love JdP +++ and will stay with JdP This breakfeast is too cloying for an everyday use but so much original compared to SM.
Now it starting to smell a bit like L'Instant de Guerlain PH - but a better version. I think I liked the start better, I can't smell the rose anymore...
Didn't like this very much. Reminds me of Rousse - that hairspray vibe. Distinctly feminine.
I will have to try it next time I go to Harrods. It will be soon.
I got my sample as well. It's a well-made perfume, but not very original. he sandalwood is pleasantly unscreechy, the rose accord smells to me like Duchaufour's candied-fruit work in Paestum Rose and Amouage Jubilation XXV (it's in many other current niches, too). This could just as well be an Amouage or one of the un-oudier Montale roses. To fruity-sweet for my taste. The original Dark Rose by Czech & Speake was a good deal more interesting btw., and that was how long ago? 2003.
Is there anybody who got their sample?
rosy first, then drydown is quite dry, sweet, woody, chocolate, honey, still a little rosy. Wellmade, wellblended. Smell like a better version of JdP

Got my bottle on this one... bought 100% blind.

I think I've found my holy grail... loving this one. A bit sweet, I agree... but on me, not on paper, it wears way different on my skin. Loving this one to death.

Hey, I've received the free sample via Lutens note-letter. It arrived about 2-3 weeks ago, but I've subscribed somewhere in July. I've thought I'll never receive them, and I was very surprised to get them in my mail-box. Don't lose faith! You'll get yours at some point!
I got my sample and agree with most everything said here in this post. It is a bit feminine, but only because of the rose nature that is never offset by green leaves or incense or patchouli. I like the scent of it. Warm and pleasant. It's a rose and sandalwood fragrance, it is simple but warm and very pleasant. I won't be buying this any time soon but am going to let the fragrance try to convince me. I was reminded immediately of Richwood by Xerjoff, but Santal Majuscule is a more mellow and softly tuned rose sandalwood scent.

edit. After smelling it more I definitely smell the gourmand quality especially in the opening. This warm rosy confection smell in the center definitely gives it an Arabic gourmand quality. It is very mild but contains hints of leather, dates, possibly cardamom and immortelle in the middle too. This has a mukhallat feel to it with a hint of something good to eat. I think this is an extremely nice sandalwood fragrance that could easily be mistaken form an Amouage attar of a subtle blend.
Haven't smelled JdP yet, Santal Majuscule smells very nice and I like it.
I don't get any feminine vibe from this; the rose is handled a bit "odd" - meaning it's not propped up with cumin or oud or saffron like you'd stereotypically get in a masculine application of rose... but I just don't get a feminine vibe from this at all like some of the other BN loved favorites, like Noir de Noir which to me, is a rather feminine take on rose, but it leans masculine.

Cafe Rose, now that's a feminine rose.
This frag is just wow. It's just so damn good, even though im not really able to explain why. It's just that fantastic sweet woody something that took me a couple of hours to really click with after testing. I ran back and bought it.

If you like Serge, you HAVE to check this out!

I have smelled Le Labo's Santal 33 right next to SL Santal De Mysore. There are both beautiful, but a got a lot of curry from the SL. I like SL's Santal De Majuscule much better than Santal De Mysore.

Does anyone else detect the undeniable similarities to Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men? Especially in the dry down.

I've tried both. "The One" just didnt excite me, but the Serge Lutens was breath taking. I have a soft spot for Sandal wood.

I adore both. Granted, the Lutens is the far superior of the two, but with better projection and longevity and just a touch more complexity, The One could be right up there too IMO. In any case, I simply couldn't shake The One from my mind each time I put Santal Majuscule up to my nose today. Delightful.
