Bottle colours

I've been wondering.... some scents come in a bottle that is dark coloured. Is it possible that this has been done on purpose to preserve the fragrance better, or is it a marketing ploy?

For example, the Chanel Antaeus bottle is black, as is the 120ml GIT, Black Orchid, etc. Do these need to be kept in their boxes to stay fresh, given that little light will go through such dark bottles?

I doubt it's for preservation. Most likely for marketing reasons.
If it were to reserve our bottles better they'd have made us aware of it by also warning that heat can spoil a perfume.

I would guess marketing reasons also.

So will my fragrances be safe without a box if they are in a dark or tinted glass bottle then?

Although they say light is the enemy of fragrances I think it's the heat that comes from the light that turns fragrances and the darkest bottle wouldn't stop the heat getting in
