first date; looking for a nice, sexy cologne

Thread Starter
Hi. I'm a 21 year old male college student, and the person I am going to date is 20 (almost 21). I'm looking for a nice, sexy but not overpowering or synthetic cologne. I'm looking for a fragrance that has a sensuous vibe to it but isn't terribly overused by guys my age (like Acqua di Gio and Cool Water).

Initially I was just going to wear my Old Spice Fiji deodorant, but just today I witnessed my date complimenting a mutual friend of ours on how good he smells (I have no idea what he was wearing, nor am I going to ask him, as he's really, really busy/occupied now since he's got an exam coming up). It got me a little motivated to impress her with a nice scent of my own.

Of course, there's the issue that I myself have to like the scent (lol). Unfortunately, since our date is only a day-and-a-half away, I don't really have time to order samples and such; I'm probably going for a blind buy if the fragrance isn't available locally (I know it's risky, but if I don't end up liking it, I'll just resort back to wearing plain ol' deodorant).

I've already been to the local department stores and Sephora. To be honest, most of the things I tried on didn't please me, as 1) I'm pretty picky, and a lot of stuff smelled pretty metallicky to me and 2) I have allergies, and a number of the colognes made me sneeze/itch.

I guess I'll tell you what scents I *do* like. I like L'eau d'Issey, but unfortunately I'm a little sick of it as it was my signature fragrance for like 2 years (and I never once received a compliment, lol). While I was sampling stuff at the department store, I thought Gucci Guilty wasn't bad (funny, though, everyone here seems to hate it). I also personally LOVE the smell of Irish Spring bar soap, along with my deodorant (Old Spice Fiji). Curve seemed pretty sexually intoxicating (in a good way), but it did seem a little too generic, Axe-like, and overwhelming. <--(note, after taking a shower and then smelling my arm, the toned-down, washed out residual smell was AMAZING!)

I guess I'll also mention things I didn't like so much. Bleu de Chanel, a smell that most women seem to love, unfortunately didn't react with my skin too well. Neither did any of the Bvlgaris I tried. Terre d'Hermes smelled very nice on paper, but once I tried it on my skin, it seemed to lose most of its orange-y smell and become more unpleasantly smokey/peppery. I was really, really optimistic about YSL and La Nuit, but man.. I guess my stubborn skin/personal body odor didn't mesh too well. Same story with Play by Givenchy. (idk; I'm East-Asian with combination-type skin; dunno if that has anything to do with it my inability to react well with most of these frags)

I think I should also note that I don't want to smell old-man like; anything tooo musky and tobacco-y might not be good. My guess is that citrusy stuff is better for my age, although I definitely don't want to smell too feminine. For example, I know Happy by Clinique, a notable citrus cologne, smells nice, but honestly.. might be too feminine (in my opinion).

Anyway, I've narrowed down a small list of fragrances that I'm definitely considering, each with the drawbacks that I currently perceive with them. Please give me all the suggestions you might have!

My current list includes:
- Rochas Man (might be another Acqua di Gio, one that every other guy wears?)
- Body Kouros (possibility of smelling too synthetic/overpowering?)
- Gucci Guilty (yeah, I know everyone here hates it, but it seemed inoffensive and pleasant to me)
- L'Instant de Guerlain (is this perhaps geared toward an older crowd, 30+ crowd?)
- Curve/something Curve-like (again, overworn by other dudes, and also too Axe-like)

Thanks for reading! All input will be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried Nautica Voyage? Very aquatic and inviting, you can pick a bottle up for 40 dollars, and isn't overworn at all, in fact not many wear it. If it's a first date I'd suggest Nautica - Voyage.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I might've smelled Nautica Voyage sometime back, but I can't remember my impression. However..I *was* under the impression that many *do* wear it...or is that Nautica Blue?

*edit* I just looked it up... I think the super-popular Nautica one is "Blue"... lol, when you type in "cologne" into Amazon it's the first fragrance that comes up.

Dude, you are in serious trouble. You wanna find in 1 day a scent that works for you and impresses the girl? I'd say forget it and wear what you are used to. You can't imagine how uncomfortable you might feel when your hastily and newly bought cologne out of a sudden turns unexpected cartwheels. That will destroy your confidence, you will focus on the cologne instead of the girl. Just leave this guy his triumph of having been complimented by your date, be reasonable and concentrate on how really to let yourself shine in this date. No girl is impressed by some scent per se.

Alternatively you could buy some agreeable shower gel, e.g. Bleu de Chanel or something like that. Would be much more subtle and less risky.

EDIT. I imagine Bvlgari pour Homme would be a fragrance that could please anyone (except you, as you mentioned). A girl that would turn her nose up on this one I wouldn't wanna meet again!
From your list, Rochas Man. It's a good frag and chixdiggit. Go easy on the trigger. From your list I also like L'instant, but that might not be what the situation calls for. Yeah, lots of cats around here don't like Gucci Guilty, but I think the Guilty Intense is pretty good not bad. Also at Sephora (at least every Sephora I've been to) they have Dior Homme and Tom Ford Extreme, both of which get the nod from me.

Hi Green_Suave, Welcome to Basenotes.

My advice is to sample as many fragrances as you can and see how they react on your skin. This is the only way to see what's out there and what works for you.

You already have some nice fragrances there you've tried and that's great. IMO (not telling you what to do-Just a suggestion) you may want to go on a date with something that's smells great but is not overpowering or too synthetic. You should find how many sprays suit you with a particular fragrance. I believe less is more.

So wear what makes you feel comfortable and gives you a 'lift'. Here are a few suggestions from me-

Dior Homme Intense
Gucci ph II
Derby by Guerlain
1725 Histoires de Parfums

as for a good citrus maybe try Aqua di Parma Colonia or others from the line.

Good Luck!
Possibly Caroline Herrera 212 Men? A fresh aquatic with a nice salty vibe. Suitable for your age, good longevity, a safe bet and the ladies like it. Oh, and it doesn't cost the earth.
Seeing that time is of the essence and you need to get a fragrance asap, you could try Dior Homme, Play Intense (saw that youve tried Play but not Play Intense) and maybe even A*Men for something out of this world. Then again they should all be easily found at Sephora so you wouldnt have to blind buy them.

If you think Gucci Guilty isnt bad, probably you could get that? Or Guilty Intense?
Of the 5 colognes you own, you are best off going with Gucci Guilty.

Forget if most people on here don't like it. If you like it, that's what matters. Besides, at least I think this is good scent.

Don't choose Aventus; the girl might prefer this glorious R2D2-batch from midsummer spring-break 2011 when stars fell on Alabama and you might not be able to get this.

Haha, yeah, I definitely won't let that happen. I think the most likely scenario is that if I don't find something that works well in a full-day trial tomorrow, I'll just show up showered & clean, with deodorant. I guess I exaggerated my urgency; in a way I meant to kill two birds with one stone with this thread; I'm asking not just in regards to the imminent date, but rather for semi-long-term use as well. Chances are that this girl and I will be going on many more dates not long from now as we're somewhat good friends to begin with. Plus, I really don't have a go-to evening & dance/social fragrance right now anyway (my L'eau d'Issey bottle broke, and that's all I had).

I'm also not sure if I sampled Bvlgari Pour Homme; I just happened to sample a series of Bvlgari colognes available at a Nordstrom counter (I think there was Man and Soir, can't remember if Pour Homme was among them).

While I definitely want to have a smell at this supposed smoky pineapple goodness that is Aventus one day, I'm probably going to stray away for the time being.

However.. any thoughts on L'instant..anyone?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I smelled my cousin's Very Sexy by Victoria's Secret the other day; and hey--not bad. Again, thoughts?

Thanks!
Okay dude, Aventus is pricey but you have to pay top dollar for the best mans cologne ever created.

L'Instant is great, Play Intense even better. Also been getting compliments with Ralph Lauren Safari. Try those for sure.
Instant Extreme (EDP) might be more appropriate.

It is quite hard to make suggestions, because you also dont know what kind of scents the girl likes; so mostly you should go with a safer (and not really unique) one. I will recommend a few, each is pretty much from a different fragrance category and i ussualy get compliments when wearing them. Most of them can be used in summer evenings too, or especially at that time.

Try:

Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight in Paris
Armani Code
Chanel Allure Edition Blanche
Dsquared Potion (spray close to skin)
Burberry Brit (a bit powdery)
Hermes Voyage
Guerlain Homme & Homme L'Eau
Gucci pour homme II
Dior homme intense, Kiton black or fuel for life

I started wearing L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme at the age of ca. 22. It never struck me as "mature", really - even back then when I hadn't yet inhaled the tolerancy you learn on basenotes concerning the relationship between fragrance - age, fragrance - gender and so on. On a sidenote I might add that a former girlfriend (aged 22 at that time) didn't care much about it. Why? - she couldn't say (not untypical for girls that age). I think that the Extreme-version might be a bit too lax and dormant for a conquering young man with all his vitality and energy.
I'm going with your liking of the Irish Spring and suggest

Mugler Cologne
Prada Amber pour Homme
Prada Infusion D'homme
Roadster Sport

Those 3 would be nice if you're planning to go with a nice white button down shirt

Can you tell me what are you planning to wear and where are you planing to go? It'll make the suggestion easier
post #19 of 47
Go with:

Rochas Man by Rochas - In its opening, a pleasing lavender and bergamot arouse the senses. From afar, a sweet and creamy vanilla bobs eagerly. Thankfully, the lavender remains throughout the composition to rein in the sweetness. The tantalizing vanilla does intrude on that grassy lavender, and brings its sugary sweetness to the fore, steering it to its heart. The middle beckons, stewing with its coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, cedar, and rasberry notes, as well as some, lovely jasmine and lily-of-the-valley accords. The sweet vanilla blends nicely with the heart, creating a delicious mocha cafe, with hints of wood and floral twinkling. The smooth base with its amber, sandalwood, and glimpses of patchouli, usurps the melange, softening it, and evolves into its enticing drydown. It's a well-constructed gourmand. This delightful fragrance's longevity is good; and its projection is average for the first 3 hours, then sticks to the skin.

Body Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent might be too saccharine.

From your list I easily prefer Rochas Man, but it is very gourmand so make sure that you enjoy those kinds of scents. It is one of the better gourmands out there, IMO.

For a citrus (in this case a couple not on your list)...

A couple choices might be either Acqua di Parma Colonia (a classic citrus eau de cologne) or Cologne du Parfumeur by Guerlain for a more modern take on a citrus edc
post #21 of 47
I agree with the Rochas Man recommendations.
Plan A, I would go with the advice from Candide. Wear what you normally wear since your on a short time frame. You need to be confident in you, not your cologne. And who is to say you can guess what she will like.
Plan B, you can try the others in a panic but remember you wont be able to figure out the amount you need to apply so you run the risk of over powering (example: Nautica Voyage is is very strong).
Plan C, follow plan A and see if fragrance can be part or your date discussion. If she's into fragrances if could be a fun topic to chat about.

L'Instant de Guerlain
Versace pour homme might be a great first date scent.... it is very clean and crisp with a light citrus / floral scent. This is a very safe scent to wear even if you happen to go a little over board on the sprays.

My 17 year old daughter likes Vph so much she has sprayed on her self just to smell it for the day .
Browse the counter at your biggest perfume seller, chat up the SA, and try to score a sample of Hermes Voyage d'Hermes. I think this is the head turner you are looking to find.
I'd go with what you know and feel confident wearing on your date and then do more research into fragrances for future dates.

One to look into I feel would be L'Essence de Cerruti; a very light leather scent that is quite wearable. Cheap too; only $20 on the "Bay". There's a recent thread on it somwehere..............

Good luck!

As a young man new to fragrance, I would recommend something easy to boy and wear. Sample many and them choose.

I recommend:

Chanel Bleu de Chanel
L'Occitane Eau des Baux
Guerlain Habit Rouge eau de toilette

All under $100 and the Eau des Baux is under $50. Try online discounters like Parfum1 and Beauty Encounter for some great e-tail deals.

If you like Gucci Guilty, wear it!! Don't allow other's tastes dictate yours.

Relax. Be yourself. Most women don't care what you use for grooming as long as it's pleasant. Also, try to avoid fragrances sold in clothing stores as millions of other young men will smell like you. Do you want that? (Then again, if you like it, wear it.)

Also, on Basenotes the word "cologne" means something specific, namely "eau de Cologne," a very light fragrance originating the in the 18th century.

Here is a guide to what the terms mean. And, "yes," men wear perfume, too, such as Terre d'Hermes and Habit Rouge. These are usually much more expensive than eau de toilette and eau de parfum.

http://reviews.ebay.com/Perfume-Stre...00000002977084

No need to spend hundreds of dollars on Derby, which is admittedly a very wonderful scent. The discounted Habit Rouge eau de toilette will work just fine.

Hi, Man, you are some picky!

Have you tried Armani Code or Burberry Brit? Those are sexy and youthful, in my opinion....or even Versace Dreamer. I think you could get all three at your local department store. Good luck. Knock her dead! (not literally)

You really want to impress her? Get in a split for some Creed Aventus. It's starting to get hate here ( seems like whatever is good, is hated on) but it really is great. Girls really dig this stuff. Out of my 40 bottles the fragrances I've received the most compliments on from girls is Aventus, curve, fierce, drifter, Tuscan leather w/ set sail at Bart's, 212 men, le male, and Rochas man.

From your list L'instant de Guerlain.

Try Gucci Pour homme 2, calming cinnamon tea fragrance that isn't overpowering and could work well for a date type scenario.
Mugler Cologne
Chanel edition blanche

l´Instant de Guerlain Extreme or,
Habit Rouge Guerlain,
Eau de Guerlain,
many...many...many compliments...

Safe:
Prada Amber
Diesel Fuel for Life

Swagger:
Varvatos Vintage
Ferragamo F Black

Cheap:
Ed Hardy Hearts & Daggers (it's cheap and I like it)

I agree with Xerbia about Aventus, but I wouldn't recommend it in this case. Aventus is awesome, but the very next one he mentions is Curve which is 1/10 the price and gets compliments like crazy too. Xerbia mentions some really good picks. For the OP, I'd go with Curve for warm weather and Rochas Man for winter. That's two great options for less than $50.

For a first date, Curve is GREAT because it doesn't call too much attention to itself and women like it on a man. I briefly dated a woman who makes scents (mostly candles but I think also some fragrances to wear). The first time we made out, at one point, she blurted out "Oh thank god you smell good!" I almost laughed because I was just wearing Curve, and I go easy on the trigger (never more than 3 sprays). I don't understand why Curve works. I own other stuff that really wows me, including a bottle of Aventus which is being shipped as we speak, but Curve is really a can't-go-wrong pick.

Go with Curve. I mean, really, it's $20. Then, if a date or two leads to the two of you actually 'dating,' go on a scents journey together to figure out what might wow you both.

Good luck!

Forget L'Instant.. some love it, others hate it.
Go with Rochas Man. It's a great fragrance and I'd say it's relatively safe. You've already encountered it so that's a plus. Like a poster mentioned above.. you don't want to try a NEW scent on a date!

But in the future, try maybe 1 spray of One Million (very easy on the trigger for date scenarios.)
OR Armani Code OR try some Chanels (I personally like Allure Homme Sport, some others might recommend the Blanche Version.)

I also like the recommendation of Fuel for Life (by Diesel) if you're into fruity fragrances...

FYI: I'm 21 as well. My advice applies to you. One of the colognes I mentioned above is bound to impress you if La Nuit failed.
I'd avoid Rochas despite the plusses above. I find it to be something you'd get at a novelty store under something Strawberry Shortcake wears. I know it has it's place but in a first date safe is the way and a really sweet gourmand might be a hazard. Generic isn't a bad word in these situations. I'd go Versace PH, Armani Mania (cedar), Bleu de Chanel, Cartier Roadster, etc. I don't like Issey but if that us a confidence scent go for it lightly and then keep looking. Just concentrate more on her than your scent. I'm 42 with a wife and kids so maybe I'm out of my element, just trying to help.
I am a college student as well soon to be 21. Since your date is only a day and a half away and you want something that is pleasing.... I'd go with something on the safe side. Since L'Homme and La nuit are out of the question... go to sephora and try out the following:

Givenchy Play Intense
Polo Black
Dior Homme
Chanel Allure Homme Sport
212 Men

My best recommendation would be Ed Hardy Love and Luck, a really nice floral citrus that smells similar to Creed's Millesime Imperial. All the girls at college love this stuff.

Mugler Cologne
Sung Homme

Clean and soapy.

If you are very secure about who you are, impress her with Dior Homme.

L'Instant de Guerlain would be a great choice, as would Acqua di Parma Colonia.

I will suggest Dior Homme Intense to you , if I am in your situation I will choose it .

I've always imagined A-Men as a really good dating scent. Soft and welcoming, but definitely "out there" without being offensive.
It's a fairly common scent now, but I doubt she'll notice if she's had a whiff of it before.
YSL La Nuit is also a good candidate. Very masculine but with a feminine "soft" touch is how I would describe it. But I'm sure you already knew that. Try giving La Nuit another go, assuming you haven't already gone on that date. For some reason, it had a very soapy smell to it the first time I tried it. Let it dry down, tried again, and it was very nice.

This is a good safe pick, but by safe I don't mean boring. I mean that women are likely to enjoy it on a man, and it isn't something she'll smell and instantly be reminded of someone else. THAT MATTERS!

I avoid scents that are VERY common such as Acqua Di Gio. AdG may get some hate here, but it's excellent. I won't wear it though, because I don't want a date to think "He smells just like that guy who dumped me." Ruh-roh! I also avoid scents that are too instantly recognizable, such as Le Male. Again, Le Male is excellent but it can be picked out of a lineup every time. "Oh, Le Male. My ex liked that too." And, I avoid uber-trendy young stuff because... well... if you're flirting with an attractive young woman, odds are she's been hit on by dbags drenched in 1 Million and A*Men. I'm not saying those scents are bad at all. I'm saying, think about the message you want your scent to send and then seek something to accomplish that without being toooooooooooooooooooo popular or trendy. If you love Mugler scents, for example, go with a discontinued flanker like Pure Malt or Havane. On the other hand, if you want something great for summer (it is mid-July, after all)... Versace Pour Homme
