Serge lutens - your 5 best ever; your 5 worst too...( grandtotal 10 fragances )

Thread Starter
At the beginning Uncle Serge issued one fragance better than other.
Ultimately many complains among his fans .
The fragances are not cheap at all.
We must be sure what we are going to buy , continue buying, keep in our wardrobe or what we do not...( discard forever).
Pls, mention what are the 5 best and the 5 worst.

I don't really approach SL fragrances the same way I do with other houses. I find the traditional "good vs. bad" debate doesn't work for Lutens.

The landmarks: Féminité du Bois, Ambre Sultan, Iris Silver Mist, La Myrrhe, Sarrasins, Tubéreuse Criminelle, El Attarine

The weird ones: Rahät Loukoum, Jeux de Peau, Miel de Bois, De Profundis, Chypre Rouge, Nuit de Cellophane...

I've got big decants of a fair number of this line, and my faves are :

Fumerie Turque
Fille en Aguilles
Arabie
Five o' Clock
Borneo 1834

Still need to try ISM and Sarrisans though, am one of those who can't smell many of the notes in MKK, and who thinks that Chergui is nice but not as exciting as many others in the line.

Wise to be aware of reformulations in this line : as I understand some of the better ones may no longer be what they once were.
^^^ Correct. My wax sample of Fumerie Turque was vastly superior to the juice in my actual bottle, which is disappointing.

Here are the best:

NOMBRE NOIR
FEMININITE DU BOIS
AMBRE SULTAN
FUMERIE TURQUE

Nothing he has ever done can compare with Nombre Noir. Femininite du Bois defined the 90's. As for Ambre Sultan and Fumerie Turque, these are superb scents that are somewhat peerless in their own right, but very specific with an extremely limited audience, especially Ambre Sultan. The rest, to me, while all are interesting, stand apart from the four mentioned above. I have almost all of them, but I find I really don't wear them that often: They require a "mood" for me--a very "90's" sort of mood, as Serge Lutens will forever be "The House That Defined the 90's" I, personally, find there only two true masterpieces: Nombre Noir, and Feminite du Bois. The rest are great, daring, thought provoking, evocative, even provocative (MKK) but can not be said to have changed history. The top two have. I wish he would bring back "Le Stylo." What a FABULOUS invention that was: A beautiful perfume pen, with "recharges" sold in packages of four: plastic cartridges just like you would buy for a rollerball montblanc. It was brilliant.

I am very keen on Cuir Mauresque and bought a bottle of it last year. I've tried a few others - neither Chergui nor Ambre Sultan seemed to suit me very well (too sweet), but I liked Feminite du Bois.

I am keen to try Fumerie Turque...

1. Muscs Koublai Khan
2. De Profundis
3. Tuberose Criminelle

Also, I seem to be the only person who enjoys Serge Noir.

Too bad that, for the moment at least, it's no longer being imported to the US.

Don't quote me on this, but it may also be one of the one's that's lost a little something through reformulation ?

Still being made and sold in Paris, so it seems. It's some pretty big wintertime stuff, and may not be for everyone, but is probably something that everyone should sniff at some point in time, just to say they have.

Now....as far as hidden SL gems, why are we not seeing Fille en Aguilles mentioned more ?

Perhaps people are scared off by the pine references, but even as someone with a mammoth old native pine in my yard, and who's had more than their fill of removing sticky smelly pine sap and dealing with never-ending amounts of needles and cones, this is really one that people need to try.

Chergui
Cuir Mauresque
Filles en Aiguilles
Fleurs d'Oranger
Tubereuse Criminelle ( yes ,6 I really like or love )

Not discontinued, but now only available as a Paris exclusive.

Not much love for L'Eau and L'Eau Froide, I notice. They are so different from what I associate with the usual SL style.
Un bois vanille
Nuit de cellophane
L'eau
Datura noir
Louve
Fourreau noir
Ambre Sultan
Iris Silver Mist
Bois de Violette
Fumerie Turque
Santal de Mysore

I don't like Sarassins, Cedre, and a bunch of others that didn't make enough of an impression to remember.
tough one, but these 5 really kick ass!
(in my order of necessity)
1. filles & aiguilles
2. iris silver mist
3. chergui
4. la myrrhe
5. gris clair...

(special mention: mkk, sarrasins, borneo 1834)

worst: louve, miel de bois, serge noir, amber sultan, arabie
post #41 of 49
My Top 5 ( favorite down ):

Tubereuse Criminelle
Iris Silver Mist
Rose de Nuit
La Myrrhe
Fille En Aiguilles

Bottom 5 ( worst down ):

L'Eau Froide
L'Eau
Nuit de Cellophane
Miel de Bois
Serge Noire

The five favorites are all fragrances I regard as excellent compositions, but the hate list is actually more diverse. The mildest offenders are creative experiments that went awry ( I see the creativity behind Serge Noire and Miel de Bois, I just think they smell terrible ), the next two a pleasant but profoundly unoriginal ( L'Eau and Cellophane ), and the top of the list smells bad and is also rather original.
Best:

Gris Clair
Fleurs de Citronnier
Fourreau Noir
None of the few ones I've tried made me feel impressed.
Like: Datura Noir, Ambre Sultan
Dislike: Arabie, Vitriol D'Oeillet, Jeux de Peau.
Well I can see that for sure I will need to try bunches of the brand yet.

1. Bois de Violette
2. Iris Silver Mist
3. Chergui
4. Ambre Sultan
5. Fleurs d'Oranger

The only one I've actually disliked was Mandarine Mandarin, but I haven't tried them all.
'Best' or 'worst' is subjective at best, influenced significantly by one's personal preferences.

5 of my favorites:

La Myrrhe
Serge Noire
Daim Blond
Iris Silver Mist
Fille en Aiguilles

5 that don't quite enthrall me:
L'Eau
Jeax de Peau
Vitriol d'Oeillet
Nuit de Cellophane
Vetiver Oriental
Douce Amere and Un Bois Vanille; I love them so I will never tire of them. Also love Fumerie Turque, Daim Blond and Five O'Clock au Gingembre.

The only two I can think of that I've tried and don't like are Jeux de Peau (gave that one away) and Clair de Musc (wake me up when it's over).
