Perfume for my mother !

Hey everyone...

Ok my mum has almost ran out of all her perfumes and I want to buy her a new one. I have a few ideas in mind but who better to ask for advice than the basenotes community !

The perfumes which she currently has and enjoys are:

J'adore by Christian Dior
Shalimar by Geurlain
Life Threads, Silver by La Prairie
Belle d'opium by Yves saint laurent

She has some others but these are the ones which she likes best and has used up.

so what do you guys recommend based on what she already has ? I am thinking of getting her Dior Addict.. please advise !

Thanks, Sofyaan

Apart from Shalimar, they tend to be sweetish fruity florals.

For a cheap and fun one, you could check Lush B Scent - a sweet rose - in the US it is not sold in stores, but perhaps it is in the UK.

Or you could revert to one of the most widespread fruity florals, Coco Mademoiselle.

I am looking for something a bit old school.... she also likes stuff like L'air du temps and similar fragrances

I don't want to get her something which every teenage girl has (although Dior addict is an exception) I would still like something which she will be wowed by, something which you can't find in a cheap drug store.

Then you can check into the Chanel exclusive line. 31 rue Cambon is a floral with a fuzzy-fruity sheen, very classic in feel. A little expensive though, in the US it comes to $210 for 200ml or $115 for 75ml. It is sold only in the Chanel boutiques, but London has them.

The Parfums de Nicolai range has also many things classical in style, and it is not too expensive. I believe there shoud be a boutique in London. An example would be Odalisque.

I would suggest maybe Ivoire de Balmain. It's about to be reformulated but in it's present form it's a very delicious floral chypre with great sillage and good longevity. Opens with a citrusy blast. It does have an old style classic moss dry down which maybe isn't to everyone's taste.

Why not take her perfume shopping and make a special day of it?

Take Mum out to Les Senteurs for a treat together. The Phul - Nana range is expensive but lovely and they do stock a superb range of all things lovely. Carons are classic and nice. She may like Fleurs de Rocaille. You can pick up any number of samples, so she can try before buying (and so can you). There is a fab coffee shop opposite the Elizabeth Street shop, near Victoria Station, or there is a newer branch in Seymour Place near Marble Arch. They will help you all the way and she will feel pampered to boot.

Ooh sorry Alityke. We crossed posts and said the same thing.

You might try some EsteƩ Lauder-AzureƩ, White Linen, or Knowing. I also like the Chanel idea, try Beige, 31 Rue Cambon, No.19 & Bois des Iles.

Seconding a visit to Les Senteurs. The Elizabeth Street store has more range, I think.

Dior Addict is a great scent - a sexy boozy vanilla to me.
+1 Coco Mademoiselle - it's quite addictive and also +1 31 Rue Cambon and the others Kumquat has suggested .

Good luck !

Caron Parfum Sacre - creamy vanilla, spices, incense, faint floral.
Organza Indecence - custardy vanilla, cinnamon, woods.

Also try Silver Rain by La Prairie. I found this to be a sweet ,long lasting ,tenacious scent . Not too much love for it here but I tested it on a long flight back to the US and it lasted for so many hours with a delicious dry down . It kept my nose busy for hours. Its worth a test.

Thanks for the help guys !

I like the sound of 31 Rue Cambon since as so many of you are recommending it

as for the idea of taking her out to Les Sentuers then I think its a great idea but sadly my mum hates me spending any money on her at all so she would never let me take her to the shop and buy perfume for her, that's why I need to buy her something in secret as a surprise lol

So I am thinking at the moment of Dior Addict or 31 Rue Cambon, some of the other fragrances recommended I am not to familiar with so being able to find them might be a bit difficult. But yes, out of the 2 I have picked what do you guys think is better?

31 Rue Cambon, no doubts.

Another nice idea might be to choose a discovery set. Some are really nicely packaged, such as Ineke. Rosine do a nice one too. Then you can work your way through them together and she can choose. What fun! She may surprise you by choosing something completely different! Les Senteur would probably advise you and do a little bundle of samples too.

Seems like she likes oriental florals+ sandalwood. Either one looks like they would be nice, both are woody, warm. I would go with Dior Addict and maybe a mini of the Rue 31. Both of those, you could get for under the price of one Rue. Rue is pricey, maybe it would be good for her to try out a mini first. So that's what I would suggest. If she likes Rue, you can get it for her for Christmas or something?

Also, another that comes to mind is Must De Cartier. This one may be a little bit harder to find however, depending on where you look.

Another idea is a Chanel mini set, some come with a mini Addict. Another is that Chanel eau de parfum mini set.

I would go with the Dior Addict...less expensive and lasts better on most skin. Rue is a better fragrance IMHO but can be very fleeting.

I would try one of the Chanel Exclusives, Bois des Iles, 31 Rue Cambon, 28 La Pausa, Beige or Gardenia.

Smasara, Chanel N19 and Gold Woman.
