Anyone wanna help a noob out with some fragrances?

Ok this is whats going on. I want to add/build a collection of fragrances. Just like the title states Im a complete noob as far as knowing what it is that makes a fragrance appealing to me. I know the best way of determining what one will like would be going and sampling them, preferably on your skin. Just thought since I have alot of free time at work I could at least narrow down some possibilities so Im not trying sample, after sample, after sample etc ...

Hoping I could maybe give some examples of what I like or already have and then maybe some of the experts could suggest me some to try.

Here is a list of what I have or what I like:

1) Allure Sport by Chanel (My Fav)
2) Fierce by Abercrombie & Fitch ( played out )
3) Acqua Di Gio By Giorgio Armani ( played out )
4) Black by Kenneth Cole
5) Bvlgari Aqua By Bvlgari
6) Jake by Hollister Co

My problem is like I said, I dont know the components that go into these colognes so I dont know how to search for similar ones. Pretty much 2/3rds of the colognes I listed are played out, especially Acqua Di Gio. It does smell great and 90% of women like it, but Id rather smell great and not have to worry about 80% of the male population wearing the same cologne as me.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

Welcome! Someone will be along soon with suggestions.

Welcome. Since you already own one Bulgari why not try Bulgari Black. It is more challenging than Aqva but beautiful. Also, you might try Chanel Pour Monsieur. I am also a big fan of Tokyo by Kenzo. It is a very light woody fragrance. Have fun discovering.

Isn't Terre d'Hermes the automatic answer, no matter what the question?

Welcome, RELiG.

How about Bleu de Chanel? Popular scent with young men.

If you want to stand out with something unique, venture to try Fahrenheit by Dior or Dior Homme. If you are daring, try Guerlain Habit Rouge in the EDT. The last one guarantees you won't smell like other men your age. You will smell elegant and sophisticated: leather and citrus with a touch of vanilla.

Bleu De Chanel
Terre D'hermes By Hermes For Men
MILLESIME IMPERIAL by Creed Millesime
FAHRENHEIT by Christian Dior

Ive heard the best reviews from MI Creed and Fahrenheit ... would those be he 1-2 of this list by majority vote?

The ones you like are safer designer scents that are popular with younger women. Others that would fit this bill are YSL L'Homme (and La Nuit, too), D&G by D&G, Nautica Voyage, Chanel Allure Homme, Paco Robanne 1 Million, L'Eau D'Issey, Chanel Platinum Egoiste, and most of the Burberrys. If you want something that is much less common, but still seems like something you'd really like, I'd sugger Sander for Man by Jil Sander. You can get it pretty cheap on ebay (no fakes of this one that I'm aware of). There are tons of other great (and sometimes really expensive!) fragrances, but I consider all of the above 'safe' buys, and none are cost-prohibitive to anyone who makes fragrance an active hobby.

Carbone de Balmain

My first thought would be Versace Pour Homme. Its similar to AdG at times, and Allure Sport at other times.

Also, you should try Allure Edition Blanche, Bleu de Chanel, L'eau de Issey, L'eau par Kenzo, Versace Man Eau Fraiche, Love & Luck, Chrome Sport, Mugler Cologne, and on the pricier side from Creed Erolfa, Millesime Imperial, Silver Mountain Water, and Aventus.

If you want something that doesn't smell like 80% of the male population then stay far away from Bleu de Chanel. Consider a decant from the splits board (after sampling of course) of Aventus or Green Irish Tweed. I also agree with the Terre d'Hermes recommendations. All three are very popular on this site but 99% of men don't care enough about fragrance to visit a site dedicated to it. You may smell like everybody here but take solace in the fact that we are very much the minority and it is unlikely that you will be wearing a scent that is popular in your "crowd" if you choose one of these.

For a safe but different designer scent try Prada Amber or Cartier Roadster. The first is soapy and clean and the second is minty and fresh. Whatever you choose, enjoy!

Try:

L'Essence de Cerruti by Cerruti
- One is initially treated to an invigorating bergamot, with its orangey bittersweetness and peppery facets. The freshness of the bergamot commingles with the compost-like and ever-so-slight barnyard aspects of white pepper. Segueing to the middle, the mintiness of birch encases the fresh opening, and infuses its wintergreen sweetness. A raw and somewhat phenolic leather wafts in the background along with the hay-like character of saffron. Transitioning to the comforting base, a creamy cedar infuses its resinous and camphoraceous woodiness, along with the sweetly vanillic and faintly earthy quality of amber. A sensual, fur/skin-like and warm musk also presents. An alluring drydown ensues. This masculine composition is well blended, and has good longevity, 8+ hours, and average projection, being light enough for an office scent. Given its very reasonable, price point, this versatile and somewhat elegant composition is worthy of purchase.

Black Soul by Ted Lapidus - Upon application, one is treated to a pleasing blend from the interplay of a bittersweet and peppery bergamot, a crisp and fresh, lemon blossom, a spicy cardamon, a slightly indolic neroli and a refreshing mint. Consequently, an all-too-familiar, sweet and spicy, bubble-gum smell materializes and wafts to the waiting heart. Here, in the middle, the bubble-gum-ish opening is immersed in an enveloping bath of fruity, medjool dates and raisins, sweetly warm and earthy cinnamon, and a hay-like and slightly honeyed floral from saffron. Transitioning to the alluring base, Chinese cedarwood imparts its camphoraceous, pencil shaving scent, while tolu balsam infuses its balsamic and cinnamic facets. A sweet and airy woodiness from gaiacwood also presents. Ambrocenide contributes its amber-like, woody character, while musk diffuses its soft and sweetly clean nuances. A comforting drydown ensues. This masculine, refined composition has average projection and average longevity, lasting about 8 hours.

A*Men Le Gout du Parfum/Taste of Fragrance (Pure Chili) - Here is a flanker to the original A*Men, wherein an enhancer, in this case chili or red pepper concentrate, is added to the mix to exalt the original's notes, to wit, the versatility of the patchouli and the richness of the coffee. I might add that it is done superbly.
Initially, one is treated to a somewhat mellow, yet familiar, cherry-vanillic, medicinal scent from the interplay of bittersweet bergamot, refreshing spearmint, fresh lavender, the nutty woodiness of coriander and magical, creamy tonka bean. A warm and smooth spiciness from the chili/red pepper showers the melange with its facets. Transitioning to the heart, aromatic patchouli releases its sweetish cocoa character, commingling with the tart fruitiness of pink pepper, as well as the creamy and sweet woodiness of Virginia cedar. Resultantly, a lovely, bittersweet chocolate plays with the spiciness of the chili/red pepper. A faint undercurrent of coffee brews and carries the melange to the base. Here, the rich, roasted coffee comes into its own and combines with the mystical, sweetly woody vanilla, capturing an extraordinary, cafe mocha aura, while a faint soapiness of musk flitters about. An alluring drydown ensues. This unique and masculine scent have average projection, 2-hour scent cloud, then becoming a skin scent, and average, 7-8 hours, longevity. A truly distinctive composition that can be enjoyed all year round.

Two by Prada worth testing:
Prada Amber
Infusion d'Homme

They both have that soapy, clean feeling, and are good all-round, all-year fragrances.
