What is THE 90s fragrance?

Thread Starter
I'm feeling all 90s nostalgic today and it got me thinking about the fragrances back then. To me, CK One IS the 90s.

Polo Sport comes in a close second.

What fragrance embodies the 90s to you guys?
Although lauched in 1989, Joop! Homme is what I remember smelling a lot. This and Le Male.
What you said plus Cool Water.
I'd also say Cool Water was formative for the 90's.
Judging by its huge popularity in my school days, ADG by Armani all the way.
...in general: Cool Water...!
...for me: Déclaration...!
Well, I think that Joop Homme, Cool Water, CK One and Eternity for Men were all THE 90s fragrance... then came Acqua di Gio.

Funny you posted this - I was feeling the very same yesterday & today, to the point that I went out at lunchtime and spritzed myself with a tester of one of my scents of the 90's - Tommy.

I haven't worn this in years, but it was one of my very favourites in the late 90's. It's nice, pleasant, and would probably still garner plenty of female compliments. However, with the knowledge I've acquired in the intervening period, I now find this terribly uninteresting, as 'pleasant' as it undoubtedly is. Save for the nostalgia it provides, of course!

Honourable mentions also to Safari, Hugo and a fair few others!

Hands down in every urban club........Jean Paul Gautier and Issey Miyake.

I just bought a bottle of Platinum Egoiste. Feels like the mid 90s when I wear it. I was only 12 in 1996, but I remember a friend's older brother wore this. He was a huge fan of Notorious BIG, so my gut tells me he wore it cause of the song reference...

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme would have to be a contender.

Can't stand the stuff now but when it hit (along with the Femme version) it seemed to herald a big shift in what was out there, and it was everywhere - the 'powerhouse' 80's were gone, the new 'clean' was in.

Cool Water was more of an 80's thing, I think, a couple of years after GIT.

chrome
People went nuts when Cool Water came out. I think everyone wore this in the late 80's and through the 90's. Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger was also another big fragrance that a lot of people wore. Hugo by Hugo Boss was also a big seller. Issey Miyake wasn't that popular because it was quite a bit more expensive than most designers. I got a bottle a couple of years after it came out and remember dropping close to $100 a bottle for it. AdG would get my vote for "THE" scent of the 90's. Guys oversprayed it like crazy, women couldn't get enough of it, and every store you went in a SA was trying to spray it on you.

1997 (aged 11/12) - CK One
1998-1999 (aged 13/14) - Versace Blue Jeans and Ralph Lauren Polo
2000-2001 (aged 15/16) - Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male and Dior Fahrenheit
post #15 of 69
For me, the first part of the 90's were about Grey Flannel, Bowling Green, Xeryus, Drakkar Noir, some of the Halston's, and yes CKOne & Polo Sport haha. Mid decade, I then got all current and moved on to Angel Men, Swiss Army and AdG.
I remember a lot of ad's for eternity, chrome, and safari when I was younger and reading my dad's men's health magazines.

CK Eternity for Men is definitely a contender. My housemate used to drench himself in the stuff. I hate it but I love the 90s!
Where I came from, Coolwater, CK One, Polo Sport, and other mainstream frags were popular. Versace Blue Jeans was a huge hit and a true compliment-getter, even my younger sister loved wearing it. And I think all teenagers wore Eternity for Men at one point. I found out about Acqua di Gio late 90's.
For me, the 90's men's fragrances were Polo Sport, Tommy Hilfiger, and Preferred Stock
post #20 of 69
CK One unfortunately..I try not to think about those days. And Eternity, which was better..but darn that CK really.
It usually takes a couple of years before a fragrance peaks. I'll go for Fahrenheit.
For a '90's scent, I think it must be something which peaked, then fell -- roughly during that time period. While I have no data to support my opinion...

CK One

Personally, I associate the late 90's, most strongly, with Curve.

Cool Water has to figure in there somewhere.

Fragrance of the '90's for Men with the fragr of the decade being Aqua di Gio.

Cool Water ('88) --> Fahrenheit('88) -- > Eternity for Men('88) --> CK One --> Le Male --> L Eau d' Issey Miyake --> Aqua di Gio!
+1 Cool Water and L'eau d'Issey pour Homme. I still smell the latter around on a frequent basis.

CK1 was all over the place. Really opened up the whole unisex thing to a new level.

Fahrenheit
For me it was the following progression:

Cool Water / Green Irish Tweed (early nineties) --> Polo Sport (mid-nineties) --> CK One (Late nineties)

Now I can't touch any of them or anything like them without terrible flashbacks of teen angst. lol
post #34 of 69
AdG is still THE best selling fragrance in 2012, it's not just one decade old, it's two decades old! That's amazing. I'm not a fan of AdG myself, but this fragrance is bossing all other fragrances around.

Horrible line up! LOL
Polo Sport for me. Loved the fresh, clean smell at the time (early-mid 90's).
+ 1 for Curve.

I remember everyone wearing a lot of CK One (including me) back when I was a teenager during 90s, but for some reason it doesn't smell quite so dated. I don't know why, but Curve just smells like the 90s to me. It's probably the most horribly dated scent I can think of. That stuff did not age well.
For me the 90's will always be about Stetson for women, Cool Water, and CK Eternity. I never wore any of them but smelled them on everyone else. I wore Coty's Aspen for most of the 90's. It was the only cologne I had experienced to that point that I liked.
For me personally, the 90's was CK One, Tommy and L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme (any of which are candidates for THE 90's fragrance)...

... and also, randomly, Boss Elements (one of my Dads blind buy castoffs that he didn't like), which was just as obscure then as it is now.
The one scent that always transports me back to the 90s is Donna Karan Fuel for Men. Speaking metaphorically.
When i think of 90's i think of spicy scents edging feminine side. I can´t think of 90's without vanilla either. So i would say: A*men, Jaipur, Minotaure, and so on.
Fahrenheit and well deservedly too.
Cool Water
A*Men
In this order. Early 90's Joop! & Curve.....mid 90's cK one..Chrome & Cool Water....late 90's Aqua di Gio

It was the down fall of men's fragrances that stared during that era at designer ones
post #46 of 69
+1 to pretty much everything that has been mentioned...oh, and Cool Water

Yep, my thoughts too, Tommy.

Possibly my first cologne, or Michael Jordan, but I still apply it when I want to wear something summery and non-offensive to the gym - in other words, an occasion when it'll be worn for only a short duration.

CK One
Fahrenheit
I can't help but think of Obsession for Men for the early part of the 90s anyway. Then Tommy after that.
This one like a time machine transports me back to the 90s.

All of the above, CKOne on top possibly.
However, probably Minotaure Paloma Picasso embodiese the 90s to me: fresh spicy aldehid.
Dior Dune?

lupo, Dior Dune indeed! I remember my boyfriend at the time wore Dune, I absolutely loved it on him

Still gorgeous and wearable.
One of my favorite summer frags.

In Paris, the 90's were defined by two scents:

for women: Femininite du Bois by Shiseido
for men: Joop! by Wolfgang Joop
+1 to Obsession
Another one that was huge in the 90's (but also released in '88) was New West by Aramis. If I never smell it again in my life it will be too soon.

I agree! I could not do these during the '90's except for Fahrenheit which was my mainstay 90's fragrance through about '94 when I got won over by Creed, first w/ Orange Spice and later with Erolfa and M. Imperiale which were my late 90's favorites. This list was what was dominating the market in the 90's - and I agree with your condemnation of it. But, that is what people bought.
