Sudden Aversions and Patterns of Taste Change

Beginner's milestone: my tastes are quieting down, or at least simpler perfumes are appealing to me more than complex ones, and I don't think it's just summer to blame. Is this relatively common?

Plain but comforting Noa Cacharel and restrained Ivoire de Balmain are becoming my standbys to recover from repeated blind-buy and evil test traumas, and the niche offerings I tend to like are soliflores and linears.

I thought I was a lover of super bold perfumes because of the instant Fracas attraction and love of the more out there CDGs--though they're all fairly wearable, but my tastes are changing. Sudden absolute hatred of Angel and Gucci Rush too, which I initially thought were loud and sort of tacky but fantastic. Some would say this is just an improvement in tastes, but I really liked those perfumes and still do but suddenly can't stand to wear them. Bold and weird perfumes are so much more interesting, but maybe I prefer them on paper or as art and not so much for wear.

So, how many turnarounds in taste and type does a perfume lover go through on his/her journey? What to expect?

Quite a few changes in taste I would imagine. People's tastes are constantly evolving and changing and I think this is pretty normal.

I go through scent 'kicks' . Sometimes I crave something and at other times, won't go near a certain scent.
Sometimes I blame my hormones and also illness.
I went through a very 'clean' scent phase last year - something that would have shocked me a year or two ago.
I have always adored chypres but lately I have gone off them too . Now I am definitely a floral gal .
Early on in my perfume journey I adored vintage in particular Guerlain and now I am not so much into vintage anymore.
Then I had a gourmand phase and a musk and an all natural perfume one ,a lemon fancy ...and on it goes .
I will always love gardenia and tuberose though- thank goodness for one constant !

Wow, Mimi. I have something daunting in its changeability yet exciting in its unpredictability to look forward to then.

I go through phases, too, and I am certain that hormones play a big part, but also climate, mood, and who knows what other factors. I am fairly constant about enjoying florals with a citrus or fruity component. They just make me feel good. On the other end of the spectrum, I enjoy something mysterious and floral/oriental for more special occasions, whether that means going out or just being in that kind of mood. I will try ANYTHING, though. Those two preferences have not evolved. They have always been there. I would say what has evolved for me is a more open mind to trying fragrances I think I won't like. And understanding that I don't have to like the same fragrance, it's ok to change my mind.

Despite many years as a perfume lover, trier and buyer I'm a relative newbie to the learned world of Basenotes. By nature I'm a natural lover of chypres, specifically whooshy refreshing citric chypres. However, since joining BN I've begun exploring other notes and styles.

I've discovered I enjoy vanilla/almond/heliotropes, ambers and sometimes I can only be satisfied by something fun when only Lady Million or JPG MaDame will do.

I'm uncertain my tastes have changed, I still adore chypres, but my wardrobe is now wider, more inclusive. I still wear whooshy, astringent, tight laced citric chypres but I now have the opportunity to let out my inner dominatrix with Cuir de Russie, my femme fatale with Vintage Opium, my secret longing to be a flower girl hippie in Purple Patchouli or a Jane Austin heroine in Paul Smith Rose

Go with what feels right that day, we don't eat the same thing for every meal but probably have some favourites we return to time and again. You currently have the equivalent of every possible foodstuff at your disposal. Enjoy your journey

I love every kind of scent - just not on the same day. I think the main thing is just to enjoy the journey.

LOL- I had sudden absolute hatred of Angel when it came out- it's just this year I have developed an appreciation of it in very small doses.

Knit, I hated Angel at first, too. Then I decided I loved it and wore the edp for a while. Then, I became OD'ed on smelling it everywhere I went, although on a few people it smells really luscious. Now, I don't care much about it, but I still save my refillable star just in case I change my mind again.

I view a fragrance journey as a continuum, with ebbs and flows.
Just enjoy whatever your nose tells you is right.

This +1. (and +100 about the gardenia and tuberose! )

Don't get rid of your Angel or your Gucci Rush. Your tastes will evolve continuously. Or, as I prefer to say, I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

Lately I've been pacing back and forth between heavy incense perfumes and sparkling citric perfumes.

A few months ago it was sandalwood and vetiver.
