Wardrobe star ratings - what do yours mean to you?

What do your wardrobe star markings mean to you?

My own ratings veer on the reserved side, so if I don't like the frag, it gets nothing at all.

One star means it is a pleasant perfume (but it may not really suit me).
Two stars means it's pleasant and quite wearable but perhaps not headed in the direction I would care to smell of, or there may be a note I don't care for amongst a fairly decent perfume (some of these have been past daily wearers).
Three stars means I can see it is a well structured perfume, is lovely and I may consider wearing it occasionally.
Four stars means the construction is good, I really like it and would definitely wear it sometimes.
Five means I just adore it, admire its layers and cannot stop sniffing my wrist.

Some odder ratings may be:-
It could be a tired nose after sampling too many and just be jaded.
It may be a bad sample or older bottle and cannot be judged well until a better sample is tried.
Getting more subjective with experience and therefore marking gets progressively harsher.

It could be interesting to see a neutral star in the centre and a negative side to balance the positive perhaps.

At this point not too much but 5 usually means its staple in my closet. I have/will buy backups of it. This represents about 25% of my collection.
4 stars represent 75% of my collections. Items I love and happy that will last me many years because of the huge collection I have. So there is no need for a backup.

I don't own anything I rate less than 4 stars because between the 150 perfumes of 4 and 5 stars in my collection, I don't have time for anything less.

I very rarely fill that bit in. I have to really really really love a fragrance to give it a rating.

Personally don't give my scents ratings, but think it's nice some choose to.

***** Indispensible. These ones are keepers and possibly worth buying back-ups.
**** Good, but could live without it if it really came down to it.
*** (a) just got it, benefit of the doubt till I know it better or (b) pretty good and it won't kill you.
** May come to overlook it's faults in a decade or two in a bout of forgiving nostalgia. Or not.
* I'm man enough to admit I made a really STOOPID mistake spending real money on this thing.

All my ratings are according to my own taste and perception about a scent, I guess.
I think a lot in my wardrobe are between 4-5 stars in my eyes or I would not have bought them .
Other times I may have forgotten to give a scent a rating.
I sometimes don't fill in the longevity rating .

+1 on mimi's statement. i might add that if a fragrance in my wardrobe has a lower than 4* rating is based on longevity only (or lack thereof) but i still deemed it worthy of having it. if it's an overall low rating then i have already gotten rid of it (swapped, sold, given away) and forgot to take it out, lol.

***** Masterpiece. Must have in my collection, whatever it takes.
**** Excellent. I definitely want this in my collection if it can be acquired at a somewhat reasonable cost.
*** Fair to Good. Indifferent to acquiring the scent, but may enjoy smelling it from time to time and will keep it if I own it.
** Poor. I dislike this scent, would not acquire it willingly, and would swap it readily if blind bought.
* Disgusting. This scent is one of the worst I have smelled and I will never own it even if it means throwing it out.
No stars means I have yet to either try the scent, or don't have enough time wearing it to form an opinion yet.

For me, very close to drseid's excellent summary. In my case, I give out the 5 star award in my collection extremely sparingly - I think I have maybe 5-6 of them in my collection, one of which is verging on being downgraded to 4*! That said, there is quite some spread between my 4* fragrances - several are almost 5*, and would be given 4.5 if possible! Some are solid 4*ers, still others are only just worthy of 4 stars and will never make the top grade.

I do own a handful of bottles that were acquired purely for 'collection' purposes as opposed to scent quality. Some of these will be 3* or perhaps even less.

But that's just me!

No stars; the most vile & disgusting stench imaginable (l have only ever tried two that were this bad).

* Don't like it & would not consider trying it again.

** Not for me, but l can respect something about it's history/ complexity/ uniqueness or whatever. l may try it again at some point to see if my tastes change.

*** l like it & would/ do wear it, but it's something for everyday, not for special occasions.

**** l like it a lot, but it's not a masterpiece, or it may lack something in the way of longevity, projection or complexity.

***** Reserved only for those l consider to be extra special, the best of their genre. These are usually either long-term loves or on my wishlist.

Star Rating (warning: ratings subject to change as my tastes evolve!)

* Scrubber
** Don't like it
*** Good
**** Great
***** Excellent.

Yup, drseid summed it up rather nicely for me, with one exception: a fragrance may be a 5-star rated masterpiece but if it doesn't work for me, I won't be acquiring it even if I do appreciate it's artistry.

Pretty much exactly what hedonist said for me.

If it's 5 stars then it went out of it's way to impress me. 4 stars is something I love, but doesn't have that extra something. 3 stars could go either way in my collection, I might sell it, or I might keep it around because it's something I wear every once in a while, I know it's not the greatest composition but something about it is still nice. 2 stars is pretty bad, not worth my time. 1 star is abominable.

I use the stars to get a mental picture on how a fragrance stands in my mind, it can help me weed out the ok from the truly excellent. And with so many great fragrances out there I just can't bother with the ok. Besides from taking the spot of something great, it's also sitting there wasting money I could use toward my next purchase.

I don't bother to rate mine. i like to see others' ratings though.

No stars - a scrubber (but if combined with a 0 longevity rating means undecided and more testing needs to be done)
1 star - Indifferent: not my kinda thing and probably don't like it, but wouldn't be annoyed if I smelt it
2 stars - Like: I find it pleasant, but I wouldn't mind if I never got to smell it again
3 stars - Really like: Great, something I would wear a few times throughout a rotation
4 stars - Adore: These are the ones that just struck a chord within an instant and made me think, 'I need a bottle of this'.
5 stars - Holy moly: Yet to have found one that I consider to be worthy. It would have to tug at my heartstrings and make me write poems about it.
