Cumming

I posted this a while ago on Fragrantica, but with the membership there being decidedly more populated by females, and the majority of blokes sticking to popular designer frags, I'll ask you gentlement with a better chance of reply.

I returned to work today (after vacation) and my NIB bottle of Alan Cumming - Cumming I bought had arrived in my absence.

I'm not sure what to make of this stuff - can't say I find it immediately enthralling.

The dirt note at the beginning is actually quite nice, in a unique and confronting kind of way, but I find it fades out in about 30 seconds leaving precious little in the way of scent.

Nose to hand, I detect a dry, almost caramel (but not sweet) note mixed with a soft pepper and spice accord.

It's weird to describe this fragrance as gourmandish, but there's something in there that makes me want to lick my hand.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses, but I already hold little hope of its longevity being good.
Update - this has all but disappeared on me, about 2 hours later.

Anyone else that owns, or has owned it - what are your thoughts on it?

It's a Christopher Brosius creation, which means an amazing fragrance followed by a disappearing act about 45 minutes later. That guy is his own worst enemy.. CBIHP would be huge if he'd start doing decent concentrations in alcohol.

I have Cumming the Fragrance and it's really strong. There is an ammonia type quality for the first half hour or so, but then it goes into dirt/cigar/vanilla mostly. It's too strong for me and I've moved on but I do have some remaining so I might try it again one of these days (I've worn it 3 or 4 times).

I concur with the above statement with the exception that I wear it often and find it one of the most overlooked fragrances ever...

@lm6: if we're talking about the original Cumming (and not 2nd Cumming), it was an alcohol based fragrance....

Hedonist, seems like yoi've found your bottle...

I only read the word cumming and that you first posted this on Fragrantica with mostly female posters...and I thought I knew where this was going.

Interesting. Wouldn't mind trying this but seem to remember that Cumming's not very strong and/or lacks staying power.

I only sampled it on a baby-wipe type of cloth the company who made it gave out and I couldn't smell much of anything, which was very disappointing, considering the stated notes.

Yeah, I don't think I've tried the water or oil version of Cumming. It should be noted the alcohol version of Cumming has distinct batch variations. The colorless juice (like water) it's the normal weak stuff, whereas the yellow juice that showed up near the end of production is incredibly potent and the juice inside seems really thick, like the factory messed up and put way too much of the fragrance compound in and not enough alcohol. You can tell which one I enjoy more..

I just compared my bottle with the picture you posted, Mine seems to be exactly in between...Pretty confusing....

It's very possible there are even more batches than just the two I'm aware of. I put in an email to CB a while back but got back a very kind of generic response along the lines of "Unfortunately as we did not manufacture these fragrances we cannot help you with your enquiry."

But I think these various kinds of Cumming batches might explain why some people get excellent longevity and others get the typical CBIHP longevity.

oh well, yes. I wasn't actually aware of the existence of two different batches...

Mileage seems to vary on 2nd Cumming, but I find it quite strong and long lasting. The juice is a dark amber-brown color. It's a bit boozier than the sample of Cumming that I have, but they are otherwise quite similar. I would not describe either one as being weak.

Some of the CB scents are a bit ephemeral, but I don't think the water base has anything to do with it. Both water and alcohol evaporate quickly; it's what's left behind that counts. I enjoy both immensely.

Alfarom, did I send you the 2nd iteration?

I have owned 2 bottles of Cumming - which I sort of detested when I first smelled it and then later on grew to enjoy immensely. Both of them have been clear, not yellow/gold at all and I have had average longevity/sillage from them, however when I apply it I really douse myself with it (+10 sprays).

This is one of those scents that you have to 'get' slowly. Be patient with it. Wear it in different situations and ways (day/night, at home/out, lightly applied/heavily applied) and let it reveal its magic slowly.

I also found it much more effective and potent combined with the now-discontinued Shower Gel and Body Scrub. The Lotion is sort of gross smelling, not sure why...?

If I had to sum up the way it smells, in two words (like Turin/Sanchez) I'd call it: nutty dirt.

I find it very shortlasting too - actually that's unfair - I find it persists well, but it is extremely quiet and close to the skin.
As for the composition itself - I think it's fantastic a gorgeously sweet boozy leather with Brosius' infamous upturned earth, lovely!

Yes you did Brian (thank you sooo much) but I've not had the chance to give it a proper wear, yet.

I just ordered this blind. Will be my Second Blind buy haha. First being Kenzo Jungle. Now this. Looking forward to it. Even if I hate how it smells at least owning the bottle will be like a novelty because of the name. The notes really look good.

Good luck. If you don't like it, you'll be able to swap it right away, don't worry
