Question regarding perfumers

Hey folks,

In your opinion would a perfume automatically be discontinued if the perfumer from that specific house retired or passed away?

I've never heard of such a thing happening. It seems to me their memory would be honored by their perfume continuing to be sold.

We don't stop selling a book when the author dies.

Couldn't have said it better myself, although I was going to use the analogy of a musician and their music. Potatoe potato :P

OP, just out of curiosity, what drew you to that conclusion in the first place?

I don't believe it's ever happened. (that a scent has been discontinued upon the perfumer's death)

I'm sure they would want to live on through their scents, just like any artist.

Well said. Stieg Larsson's Millennium series is a good example.

Not at all. Eau Sauvage is more alive than ever as Chanel N°5, N°19, Guerlains. Imagine a perfumery world with no Chanels or Guerlains!

Can't imagine why it would.

Neither in my opinion nor my experience.

And in these days of 'noses for hire' also unlikely.

Along those lines, would a perfumer automatically be shot if his perfume were discontinued?

No, but given some great scents that have gotten the axe, perhaps they ought to be instilled with this sort of fear!

You must remember that, other than exceptional circumstances, once the Perfumer has finished working on a particular brief, the fragrance no longer belongs to him but to his employer; the Fragrance House. ANd that house can do what the hell it likes with the fragrance; and often does!

...or the entire canon of classical, medieval, renaissance, baroque, classicist, romanticist, symbolist, and modernist world literature...

Nick

It might if, like many of mine, it was produced exclusively by the perfumer in person and that person also was the sole owner of the House and the formula had not been sold to anyone else or placed in escrow. #BuyThemWhileYouCan
post #21 of 21
Their is no reason why that should occur. The formula/recipe for the fragrance remains with the house.
