Muscs Koublai Khan / Musc Ravaguer - I intend to get this both.

I am sure the Civets in MKK and MR is Synthetic - is it?

What else trumped MKK and MR?

I've come to love Absolue Pour Le Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian - Althought i wouldnt know
if its civet-ted - i can tell you i felt as though - i've found something i've missing a long time ago

I don't know if there is real civet in the two, but I think most civet nowadays is synthetic, if else, for reasons of cost. I don't find MR particularly civety; MKK and APLS yes. A current civet bomb is Amouage Gold man (at least the one I have). In vintage, My Sin.

there was a recent thread about perfumes rich in civet, dont' remember the link.

Natural civet is becoming a forbidden ingredient due to issues around animal rights. So far, that is not the case of castor oil, maybe because they are a plague.

A word of caution, civet smells like feces, no joking, It does have an effect on floral components, it potentiates their presence and sillage. However, asking for a civet - prominent smelling fragrance literally means that that person is asking for a fragrance smelling exacly like feces. Which puts me in an awkward situation: how to be precise when asking about these kind of fragances. Would it be right to say "a civet prominent fragrance in which floral components are marked up / stressed by it?"

I have no doubt that the civet used in MKK is synthetic, so you need not worry. If you want another civet prominent composition, you should look into Jicky.

Agree. I personally can't wear this stuff due to the large amount of civet early-on. If you are looking for heavy civet it should fit your needs nicely, IMO.

No, real civet has been banned in compositions for many years now. I am sure there is not one house that uses it - and most certainly not Lutens, Guerlain or Amouage. However, it is conceivable that there is some highly 'niche' brand that uses civet from naturally expired civet cats; for natural musk still makes it onto the market via the natural deaths of musk-deer. Personally, I am truly glad that things are the way they are in this regard. Animal cruelty is bad.

Thanks guys - ill have to look for a vintage jicky, and that being a perfume for female and all - i am not too keen.to say..yes animal cruelty is bad - i am a vegan but you know what..i would like to smell some real civet in a perfume - just to see how it is...and just civet oil doesnt interest me, just like how cambodian oud oil doesnt..it has to be blended into perfume! I am going on the lookout for a sample of Musc Koublai Khan and its a bit difficult to find - even lucky scent doesnt have it!

Frederic Malle seem to be okay selling samples (lot of 3 i was told) now i have no idea how much it costs...any idea?

Absolue Pour Le Soir and Epic Man was my "Best Find" of the year

+1 on Jicky and Mouchoir de Monsieur. Try the Jicky EDP as it is the best version.

Diors Leather Oud is by far my favorite skanky juice, but of your two I prefer MKK. Also cant go wrong with Kouros. Iquitos also has a really nice civet note hidden under all that incredible rose.

Even though the use of civet is often replaced by use of a Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to mimic it's scent for fragrances.

In some frags civet comes across as a "bad breath note" like with Mouchoir de Monsieur or too fecal. But when they get it right it can add so much to a fragrance giving you that dark musky smell like in Leather Oud. Or like the basenotes of Givenchy Gentlemen where they use just a dash.

According to a recent interview I read with Francis Kurkdjian, the civet in Absolue pour le Soir is actually real civet (ie. actually from a civet cat)!

Maybe that's why you like it so much In my case, I think it's the reason I'm not crazy about it. Artistically I think it's great, but I can't wear it cuz' it reminds me of a huge fur coat from the 40s.

Man you are so right! - it makes me feel "carnal" like a big bad indian wolf..i wouldnt mind buying another bottle just to stock it up..i think its a fragrance made for werewolves..

To my nose Kouros is more earthy pungent patchouli nicely musked - i dont get any civets, Yatagan is boozy and i havent smelled Dzing! based on the fact that a lot of folks compare it to bulgari black.

Yatagan features castoreum - beaver butt - rather than civet. Castoreum is a great animalic too. I particularly like its use in Micallef's (now discontinued) Yellow Sea. A lot of the castoreum out there is still real, too.

Kinski
Michael Storer Djin & Monk
Epic Man
Memoir Woman
Coeur de Vetiver Sacre


there are others but those are the ones I have experience with (except Kinski) and they're all good.
