For those of you who didn't see this in yesterday's news... an 8 year old boy found a large piece of Ambergris while walking on the beach of Hengistbury Head. What a lucky chap!

(Mumsy, is this any where near you? I know you'd appreciate a find like that!)

Agree - that would be useful when you´re diving into the Creed price range.

My bad, I never read that area! Sorry!

Just to clarify: the evidence that it's vomit is more-or-less non-existent, it's whale poo.

Details on my blog for those that are interested.

From what I understand from people who make a living beach-combing for this stuff, that would be your nose . . .

though I also gather that it is really quite hard to find - other than these lucky finds that make the news, most of it is discovered by a handful of people who have learnt to do it reliably.

"Well...."

Ooh, I used to live near there, and I've walked along that beach - and I have found poop there, but sadly not sperm whale

Lucky fella - I wonder which, if any, perfume houses will get in touch with him...

I'd very much like to smell it in its raw form.

Creed is finding new technology on how to get sperm whales hungover.

Well done! I wouldn't have picked it up.

Sly marketing trick by Creed, getting the general public interested in whale puke via the heartwarming story of good fortune of a smiling young british boy...

Turns out the boy is actually a 3rd cousin to Erwin Creed....

Little bugger!, as Martha or George in Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf (the movie: 1966) would say. I'm sure Olivier has already hired a hitman. Just keep an eye on this story!

I'd like to start my life finding an ambergris lump or a huge diamond. I think I'll take a ride. I live 40 minutes from a place full of diamonds and gold. I hope it'll not be raining there.

Text:
A SCHOOLBOY has stumbled across a rare piece of whale vomit which could be worth a staggering £40,000.

Officially called ambergris, the substance is highly sought after and is used to prolong the scent of perfume.

Charlie Naysmith made the discovery at Hengistbury Head, much to the amazement of his parents.

His find doesnt look very exciting and most of us would probably walk straight past it, mistaking it for a stone.

But Charlie was curious enough to pick it up and, after a bit of research, he and his family discovered it is worth between £10,000 and £40,000.

Charlie, of Station Road, Christchurch, is a pupil of St Katharines school in Southbourne and has been on nature walks with his class in the area.

He is now trying to decide what to do with it and quite fancies using the profits to build a house for animals.

His dad, Alex, said: He is into nature and is really interested in it. We have discovered it is quite rare and are waiting for some more information from marine biology experts.

The piece of ambergris, which weighs 600 grams, could have been floating in the sea for decades before being washed up on the beach.

The family has been told it is unlikely that more ambergris will be found in the same area.

Ambergris is a waxy substance from the intestines of a sperm whale, which is used to prolong the scent of perfume. It initially has a foul smell but after years of floating on the ocean, exposure to sun and salt turn it into a smooth lump of compact rock which feels waxy and has a sweet smell.

Interesting.... It doesn't look like a normal bit of ambergris to me. Looks more like spermaceti at best. There was a huge dumping of a waxy yellowish petroleum waste around British beaches that often gets mistaken for Ambergris. I hope it isn't a bit of that. I have had a few stinky bits of that sent to me to identify. The curl over is most unusual and the yellow colour too. I would be surprised if this proved to be the real thing.

I would be more interested in a description of the smell, and if they read this, then get a heated pin and put it into the lump. It should make a little wisp of smoke that smells fragrant and be a tar-like ooze.
