Minotaure: spoilage, or...?

I had a sample of this that I enjoyed, so when I came across a full-size bottle of it recently I swooped it up. I'm not sure how I feel now though. I'm wondering if this particular bottle has turned due to age/storage, or if it's just something I didn't notice when I was dabbing on smaller amounts from the mini splash (as opposed to the spray I have now), but after the initial lemony top notes fade away there is a strange sharp sort of oily smell that reminds me of WD-40 or tar (at first I wondered if it was vetiver combining with something because I've smelled some kind of skanky vetiver, but it has a more "chemical" and less "smoky" quality to it) that shows up after about 15 minutes and lasts strongly for about an hour, I don't really pick out any of the middle florals, they're sort of hinted but overpowered by the other smell, and then it goes to the warm base and everything is ok again. Anyone else own Minotaure and can weigh in on this?

I've bought old colognes before without much issue, and even though 1992 is 20 years ago now (ah geez, wtf) it seems a bit young to "turn", especially when I've had much older ones that haven't and it seems odd that it would go in a way that only affects the middle.

Good coincidence of your thread, as I was just thinking about this fragrance Vartan. I did a SotD yesterday with the last remains of my vial.

I really don't get this sharp tar in the beginning or first hour as you said you did. If you said you got it after several hours, maybe.....as I have heard others having this experience. But in the first hour ? I honestly feel this bottle may be "off" and somewhat spoiled. I am not the best nose here, however. Perhaps someone else can chime in. I wish I could be of more help to you.

I really wish this fragrance had a bit more power to it. I feel it wears too close to the skin on me. Incidently, I have seen more bottles available recently, which is a good thing.

I do enjoy it, I had the miniature (3-5ml perhaps?) and enjoyed wearing it but I've known colognes to have a different scent "feel" from putting on with a splash vs spraying, at least I have, so I thought perhaps it could be that, but I don't remember even a hint of this smell. But yes, I know what you mean about projection, for me its about 15-20 minutes of strong citrus that projects well, then about an hour or two of this odd smell I've mentioned which is fairly close to the skin, and then for the next...say, 5 or so hours I have a gradually fading sort of soft, warm, "fresh" smell that is extremely close to the skin.

Tar might not be the right word for it, but it really does remind me in a way of the smell of WD-40, not exactly like it but the "character" of the smell if that makes sense. A kind of sharp, sort of oily, bitter scent.

But yes, going to try it a few more times, the first time I put it on when I was already warm and had perspired from being outside, this morning I thought would be a good test since I was clean and freshly dressed, but perhaps I will give it a few more tries, for all I know it could be reacting with my soap or something. But it's also possible something happened, on top of the cologne being fairly old, the bottle was quite warm when I opened the package after receiving it in the mail, I don't know that a hot summer trip through the mail would be enough to damage the scent but you never know, or really what other abuses it might have suffered through its life to this point.

IMO it didn't fit your taste. Your description matches many of my thoughts on this perfume.

I don't get an oily or bitter smell with this one. Perhaps the bottle has turned or maybe you are very sensitive to a particular aromachemical used.

Such a unique smell. Loved Minotaure for a few months.

It smells like it contains five times as much coumarin as it needs. But rather than smelling like the lively and beautiful new mown hay, this coumarin ends up smelling a little rotten, like wet hay by the barn.

I had a 5ml bottle some years ago. It ended up going bad and smelt disgusting. It turned very disinfectant-like and chemically.

Hmm. Well, on the upside, I wore it a few more times and discovered that there must be an interaction on some level with a body wash that I use, even though I showered at night and can't smell the fragrance on me the next morning, it must leave something behind because I noticed that on the morning when I hadn't used the soap (Vita Bath "Green" scent) the night before the bitter smell was greatly subdued. It was still there if I smelled for it, but not anywhere near as intense. Either that or perhaps I am getting used to it? I'm wondering if maybe I should see if someone here who is familiar with the scent of Minotaure smells a sample from this, if it's "right" to them.
