Is there an "IT?

Thread Starter
I've always been fond of fragrance but late last year I begin a very serious search for my "it" scent. I started by checking on-line reviews wherever I could find them. This gave me a starting point. From there, to narrow things down a bit, I learned which ingredients I liked and disliked and used basenotes as a way to check ingredients before ordering samples.

In the past year I have tried over 200 fragrances and, while I've discovered many great ones, I still haven't found my "it." There is always something lacking.

So, I'm looking for feedback: those of you who have been doing this for many years - do you ever find your "it?"

Thanks everyone.

I have come close to the "It" or what is known as the holy grail fragrance but I have not found it as yet.

You can only hope that you never find it. I've known a few who have and it was a terrible thing to watch. When their bottle arrived they spent more and more time applying, sitting in an ecstatic olfactory self indulgence, showering, applying, sitting in......
Eventually they just quit going to work. When they ran out of money and fragrance they would end up bleeding out from all their wounds from bottles that they broke trying to get to that last drop of heaven. Some things are better never discovered.

Red for men by Giorgio Beverly Hills is my "It" or "Holy Grail" but that don't mean I wear it faithfully every day of my remaining life.

Don't have an "it" per se more like a "them"

I have found many its. My its also change over time, what last year I simply liked a lot sometimes becomes a big love and viceversa. Regrettably, some its are vintage, extrait concentrations, and no longer available.

I have several "its" and not just one, as of yet

I've come to the conclusion that even if I find "it" I'll come to grow tired of it.

This sounds a bit like the awful Direct TC commercials currently running on TV.

I do understand the sentiment.

Closest thing is Creed GIT

I will say and I am playing to make a separate post about it, but the "its" for me are 3 green, musky fragrances that I adore (Vince Camuto, GIT, Pleasures), and 2 incense (kyoto, JXXV). I would be happy only having these if I were forced to.

I did - Tubereuse Criminelle. Then they reformulated it.

Better to have loved and lost...

For me , IT would be kenzo air, but longer lasting and with greater projection. However, I'm glad to have still not found the all too elusive IT! I love the hunt too much...

Sounds somewhat like friends who find porn...

I hope I never find it ... the search is what matters just like hunting, the chase is what makes it primal and addictive pulling the trigger is circumstantial. It will be like finding God it will be nerve breaking. What next?

I think its more psychological as well - events surrounding it as well your "life at the time" - any fragrance in your "BEST YEARS" can be become your IT fragrance;
It always reminds you of the sweet moments, the first time i blind bought Armani Eau Pour Homme and started using it.......
i didn't really like it the first few wearings, but i grew accustomed to it, ended up falling in love with it! - but there are other fragrances which are better blended, well executed, much more refined than Armani Pour Homme, in-fact i've gotten more compliments on other fragrances and cant recall receiving any compliments on the former, yet it completed me in away, other fragrances can't.
So, whilst there are heavyweights in my list which costs much much more,
so much better smelling and beautifully crafted gems, for me , Eau Pour Homme will always
be my IT!

Unfortunately, its now been discontinued in Malaysia and i hear versions elsewhere is reformulated.

Contact Grant at Basenotes and he can get you to the folks over at IT. ........had to be a smartass .....hadn't he ....lol

But in terms of "IT" ..........I think Jublilation XXV............nothing else push all the right buttons in terms of comfort , wearability and satisfaction .....
Who knows , maybe there will something else to surpass later on ......but as of now ....IT is king

For the older generations in my family, having a signature scent is a necessity. They find my wearing different frags very strange and often comment to me that I need to settle with one that's the most "me". The only reason for switching it up to them is if you've had one for a number of years or go through significant changes - for example, my mother changed her signature scent when she had me, and again when I had moved away from home.

For that reason, I'm also somewhat obsessed with finding if not THE one, then at least one that I could handle wearing exclusively for a number of years.

For me, "IT" means a scent that I enjoy, fits my personality, has great longevity and is incredibly versatile. That's a tall order, but Gucci Pour Homme II fits the bill. The fact that it's an excellent compliment getter is a sweet bonus.

You will need to stock up now, as it is being discontinued; unfortunately!

Yup. I called Gucci to confirm whether or not they were discontinuing it since I'm still seeing it in stores and online. They said it has been discontinued and they're in the process of going through their remaining stock.

And, yeah, I bought more.

I've been thinking about this lately, and I think I've come to the conclusion that I've been hunting 'it,' fragrances in numerous categories as opposed to a single holy grail. This makes life easier.
I thought it was Egoiste for me, but my fragrance attention deficit forced me to keep exploring

Fragrances are constantly being discontinued and created. If there is an "it" chances are you will end up replacing it once something better comes out.

Totally agree. That's why I only bought one backup bottle of my beloved GphII. By the time I even get around to using the backup bottle, I may have already discovered something I love even more.

Is it possible that "it" is just a state of mind rather than an actual fragrance? I think so. You'd have to find something you love whilst being satisfied with having just one or two fragrances. This is a mindset. In your searchnfirnthr one, you've become accustomed to having so many choices at will and it's always difficult to downsize.
There are jus too many wonderful ones to choose from to have an "it". I have my favorites, but I own so many, I only wear my absolute favorites about once / month if I'm lucky.
I've found "it" several times, and then by the next week I've changed my mind and moved onto something else. Life is more interesting that way.
My "it" is a 'them" too, and could be narrowed down to the following if necessary

Burqa Eau Fine
Yellow Sea
Antidote
Memoir Man
L'Anarchiste
Washington Square
Burberry London
Bois de Turquie
H&G Askew
Versace Dreamer

Ok, I'm still leaving out some that I shouldn't, but I could lie with just that drobe if need be!

I think in this hobby the journey is the reward. It is like expanding ones knowledge on any other field of interest. Anyone who discovered, for example, a symphony by Beethoven that he likes will probably want to hear more and more. So he goes through Beethoven and then, if still interested, he goes farther and farther.

Yes, it's the act of questing that's the thing in my opinion.
