I've sampled M7 & Royal Oud, and I definitely prefer Royal Oud. But, I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of oud, and that's why I like Creed's scent. (because I get very little oud in this one). To me, it just comes off as very clean, classy, and formal (almost powdery/woody). I don't care for M7. It's just way to medicinal for my tastes. I tried it because of all the cherry and Dr Pepper references, which I like, but I don't get either. Just a very strong medicinal, syrupy wood note.

I have both the original M7 and Royal Oud and like them both, but of the two my pick would be the latter as it lasts longer on my skin.

Oud Luban by Aftelier.

Pure Oud.

I really enjoy Creed Royal Oud, but IMO I hardly consider it an Oud fragrance. It should have been called Royal Tea. Excellect however. M7 is nice, but I would lean toward The Different Company's Oud Shamash or even Heeley Agarwoud. I also would recommend Armani Prive Royal Oud. And Bond No. 9's New York Oud is fantastic. I have both M7 and it's twin brother M7 Oud Absolu. Nice, but a little skaniker than I like, so I would pick the other ones I mentioned previously over M7 usually.

Funny, I don't find M7 skanky at all, certainly not the beast its reputation suggests. Instead, it wears on me as a bit tart, warm, basalmic, and even a bit sweet (likely from the amber base). I think of it as sensual yet from a left-field perspective. When I think if skanky oud, though, I think immediately of Dior Leather Oud. That stuff still kinda scares me. :-)

For me Royal Oud.

M7 vintage is realy great no doubt about that , but still for me not as good as Royal Oud.

Black Afgano not my cup of tea.

Are you after an Oud fragrance specifically?

This +1. Tried M7 and Royal Oud and I don't care for M7 either. Too strong and cloying. Creed's offering (whilst a rip-off - and yes I know you said taking price out of the equation) is much lighter, more wearable just about anywhere.

And yes, I am not an oud fan either!

Yes

M7 doesn't smell Oud-y, but it is a great scent. If you are interested in it I'd pick it up before they're all gone. Royal Oud is also great, but also not very oud-y. I'd recommend something from the Montale line if you want some place to start.

original M7 is great, I love Royal Oud as well...

M7 is better than the other 2 but those are not real oud frags. Try some Montales or Kilians if you want to get closer to real oud frags.

Black Afgano is more fun to wear, but M7 wins it for versatility.

Try:

Red Aoud by Montale - Upon application, an explosion of warm and vibrant, red pepper, coupled with the mustiness of aoud and a lovely, rich, red, fully-bloomed rose, with faint, lemony pixies flitting about, bestir for recognition. This vivacious blend frolics to the middle. Heaps of saffron, with its earthy and dusty floral aspects, tame the adventuresome pepper and rose, aided by a muted, yet biting, anise from the keen cumin, and further assisted by a winsome, mysore sandalwood, which imparts its buttery and sweet woodiness. This sensuous melange covorts with the magical aoud, giving rise to hints of an inoffensive powderiness as well as a delicious cocoa, and flows to the awaiting base. Here, in the capable base, as the beautiful rose fades away, the drenched, citrusy greenness of haitian vetiver, empowered by the enabling orris, steps forward to morph the melange aforementioned into a delectable, chocolate drydown. This sexy and potent composition has very good longevity, 10-13 hours, and projection.

My experience exactly. In the cold I can tolerate M7 a little better than I use to.

Vintage M7 FTMFW
Again, don't understand the comparison but vintage M7 by far of the three mentioned although BA and RO are both great too.
There's a lot of oud threads if you search for them that will provide insights but still wearing these yourself is best.
If you want smell real oud though get oud oil.
I have sampled all and owned BA and CRO. I prefer the Royal Oud as it is a more refined version of an oud/aoud fragrance. It can be worn to work/going out/evenings. BA and M7 are dense, dark and less versatile.

Black Afgano

I chose other. My vote goes for Le Labo Oud 27
