What is the best leather fragrance on the market?

I smelled Pure Leather, but I expected more. However, Tuscan Leather is great.
it really depends on which kind of leather you're after....
Tuscan Leather as it actually smells like everyday leather than a lot of fantasy interpretation frags on the smell of leather.
Acid leather have some great ones like Tuscan Leather and Leather Oud (Dior).

Raw leather have some real hits like Cuir de Russie (Chanel), Cuir Ottoman and other classics.

Alfarom makes a good point... in effect the options run the gamut from smooth suede-like to floral to hardcore animalic types.

As a point of reference, my own preferences are more towards the smooth and suede-like leathers... To that end, my favorite is Cuiron by Helmut Lang (but it is discontinued and quite pricy to acquire nowadays as a result if you can even find it). Out of the leathers currently being sold on the market, a great smooth floral leather is Cuir Pleine Fleur by Heeley which would be my recommendation.

If you like your leather more classic and hardcore, then the great Knize Ten is always worth a sniff as well.

Chanel Cuir de Russie, esp. the parfum.

Exactly!

Butch masculine leather - Knize Ten, Knize
Classic elegant leather - Bandit, Robert Piguet
Dirty animalic leather - Cuir du Russie, Chanel
Sweet feminine leather - Cuir de Lancôme

My favorite is, with no competition whatsoever;
Chanel's Cuir de Russie. It's very male-friendly.

Derby, Knize Ten and Patou pour Homme...and for light soapy leather: Parfum d'Habit

Me, too.

Cuir de Russie is notorious for its differences from one person to another.
Some find it very floral and 'pretty', others, like me, dirty and animalic.
Thank God I belong to the last group.

Tott describes it perfect in the directory, when he writes:

'... smells like a sweaty horse saddle!'

I don't know, I thought it was quite animalic when I tried it a few months ago (the current edt)... After its nose-burning aldehyde onslaught, it smelled just like a dirty feces-laden barnyard to my nose until the nice leathery dry-down that was much better.

Go away birch tar. I really think TL is the best intro leather on the market today.

That must be the case. For me its floral indeed, a lot of iris going on, with a nice and conforting leather.

I agree with the opening with the aldehyde assault.
When I first smelled it I though that I have received a N°5 decant instead of Cuir de Russie.

Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford - Upon application, one is immersed in an invigorating leather, quite similiar to new, nubuck shoes, exuding a soft, velvety smell. This wonderful leather appears to be superimposed on a fairly muted, nectarous and fruity cluster of raspberries. Reveling herbs, namely saffron and thyme, push this fruitiness aside, and infuse the leather with their own sweet and peppery as well as lemony and woody aspects. A faint floral sweetness from jasmine begs to be recognized, but succumbs to the nascent, citrus and pine of olibanum. This rich frankincense rises to tug at the supple leather, and in its zeal, a fleeting, terpene note is sensed. As opposition, a sharp woodiness from the amber counters with its own plea for supremancy. The coveted, subtle leather meanwhile basks in its elegance. Albeit somewhat linear, this appealing composition has good longevity and projection.

Many great leathers, but for me Bandit, the s&m lady. though I have recently received a vintage Jolie Madame, and that fair lady can use a whip too.

As for Cuir de Russie, not only it varies from person to person, but also concentrations differ a lot. The parfum is less floral, morel eathery and skin-like. Still, not particularly animalic on me (at least relative to the most animalic beast of the lot, ELdO Rien).

Very subjective but I enjoy Creed Royal English Leather and Montale Oud Cuir D'Arabie.

Knize Ten

Glad I finally saw Creed Royal English Leather posted above. It is a great Leather fragrance. Also Puredistance M.

In Regards to Chanel Cuir de Russie, I do not get any animalic feel at all, especially when compared to Knize Ten or Dior Leather Oud.

my favorite leather costs $7 for 6 oz. it smells like leather more than anything ive ever smelled. it is clubman special reserve by pinaud. before dismissing it as a crappy drugstore scent, listen to me- as i too thoight it would be garbage. this smells like pure leather. this smells like leather. not birch tar, not chemicals mixed together to simulate the essence of leather. this smells like leather in an extremely pleasing way. if you ever have the chance to sniff a bottle, im sure you will buy it. it is very masculine, it is a very good scent and sells for peanuts!

Cuir Beluga by Guerlain is one of my favorite leather scents to date.

Like many others unfortunately, Knize Ten does not contain oakmoss any more, which makes it a tad sweeter and more cinnamon-y. Try to get the older version with "evernia prunastri".

Cuir Pleine Fleur is a great one. Tuscan Leather is not very leathery to me.

For me:
Knize Ten: a barbershop leather that is the epitome of classic masculinity
Cuir Ottoman: A realistic suede that is subtle and unobtrusive
Kolnisch Juchten: Intensely smokey and dark, raw leather with a touch of powdery sweetness
Santal 33: To me this is the closest rendition to a beautiful leather jacket with a hint of sandalwood
Fahrenheit: Leather plus petroleum products, although not necessarily gasoline(its hard to put your finger on what the note is)

Honorable Mentions(equally great, they just dont remind me of leather all that much): Vintage Bel Ami, Leather Oud, Cuir Pleine Fleur, Antaeus

Cuir Ottoman.

Cuero de Rusia Rosetto, a local vintage cologne. It beats all the cuir - based scents in my wardrobe if you are into subdued, restrained scents. No isu butil quinelone, no birch tar, it smells like cuirs should.

These are the ones I like as well. Vintage Derby too, although I don't really think of it as a leather fragrance.

1. Puredistance M
2. Creed Royal English Leather
------ vast distance ---------
3. Chanel Cuir de Russie
4. Cuir Ottoman
5. Guerlain Cuir Beluga

To me, Dior Leather Oud is way too dirty/anamalic (smells like the animal is still wearing the leather, not you). And I find Kinze Ten to be way too dated - It smells like one of the Village People.

Chanel Antaeus
Cuir de Russie. As with all these things its personal but this is the nearest thing to the perfect fragrance ive found. Leather but not over the top for me. I put it on and just feel ready. Like your best suit, your favourite classy shoes. The icing on the cake, any time.
Montale Oud Cuir D'Arabie is animalistic, the best.
For pure leather,Montale Aoud Leather.
As for Dior Leather Oud, the leather only lasts 10 min. on me, then incense and dust for 6hrs.
One I enjoy is SMN-Peau d'Espagne a loud masculine leather
post #40 of 52
In my case: undecided between Creed REL and Knize Ten
post #41 of 52
fahrenheit, most recent formulation

My vote is for Cuir Ottoman and runner up Cuir d'Oranger

Knize Ten for the unadulterated leather experience.

MMMMM my favorite genre. My top 10 favs in no particular order:

1. Tuscan Leather
2. Cuir Ottoman
3. Oud Cuir d'Arabie
4. Cuir de Russie (Creed)
5. Cuir de Russie (Chanel, pure parfum)
6. Cuir Mauresque
7. Royal English Leather
8. Odori Cuoio
9. Knize 10
10. Cuiron

I struggle with Leather Oud. I find it more animalic/skanky than any of the others on my list - yes, even moreso that OCd'A. I used to not be too fond of Chanel's CdR, but after revisiting, I have turned a 180 on it. I definitely prefer the pure parfum to the less leathery EdT.

I haven't tried Puredistance M in about a year or so, but I really don't remember any leather in it. Definitely more of a spicy oriental-chypre. I'll give it another go this week and see if I change my mind.

This is my reference leather scent as well.

I don't think I can make up my mind. I own and enjoy Cuir de Russie, Knize Ten, Cuir de Lancome, Derby, Jacomo de Jacomo, Aramis, Bandit, Giorgio Red, and many others I'm sure. I can't really decide - they all reveal different facets of leather.
My favorites are Derby, Xerjoff Homme, Tuscan Leather, Cuir Beluga, and Vintage Chanel Cuir de Russie Pure Parfum.
I agree, it is clean leather. Most of the other leathers i tried were too dirty for my taste.
